The future of broadband is changing in the Highlands & Islands

ART

Superfast Broadband
Roll-out

FILM

Digital
promo

Given how little fibre optic cable there was in the area previously, its a huge engineering job and will take
time. As well as laying 1200km of new cable across land and sea to create a fibre highway, we then have
to put in all the local cabling and green cabinets which get the broadband to homes and businesses.

KIDS

146m is being invested as part of the DIGITAL SCOTLAND SUPERFAST BROADBAND initiative to bring
better broadband to 84% of Highlands and Islands premises by 2016. The project which will create a
massive fibre network across the region is being led by HIE, and delivered on the ground by BT.

STUART ROBERTSON, HIEs Director of Digital, commented: The rollout takes the potential of the
internet to a whole new level. It will bring better broadband to around 156,000 people who could not have
accessed it otherwise, and for those in the hardest to reach areas, the creation of the backhaul network
will make finding solutions easier.

MUSIC

The first places to get services through the project went live in Buckie, Moray in February of this year.
Latest figures show that more than 30,000 homes and businesses in the Highlands and Islands can now
order fibre broadband as a result of the project.

Highland Vision
Were always up for a bit of photography, so well be heading down to the Stalls Gallery
at EDEN COURT to see THE ROYAL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY OF SCOTLAND 2014/15
TOURING EXHIBITION [1]. Following last years roaring success, Eden Court will again
be the venue for the Highland Region, where the prints will be on display from MON 05FRI 30 JAN. Included in the 2014/15 exhibition are prints from three Highland Region
photographers: Alastair Cochrane ARPS, Lynda Cochrane LRPS & Mike Tibbs LRPS from
the Inverness Camera Club, and Lesley Simpson ARPS and John Simpson from the Dingwall
Camera Club. Once again the exhibition will bring together in one place the various talents
and photographic genres of some of Scotlands top amateur photographers.

Also showcasing Highland talent and well worth a visit is KILMORACK GALLERY, whose
WINTER EXHIBITION [2] runs right through until MAR 2015. This show features some
exciting work by established artists and those new to the gallery including; James Newton
Adams, Paul Bloomer, Patricia Cain, Sam Cartman, Kirstie Cohen, Peter Davis, Helen
Denerley, Henry Fraser, Leonie Gibbs, Gail Harvey, Liz Knox, Allan MacDonald, Charles
MacQueen, Illona Morrice, Robert Powell and Peter White.
Particularly impressive are the large-scale paintings and woodcuts from Shetland based
artist Paul Bloomer while another Shetlander Peter Davis demonstrates, according to
critic Georgina Coburn, his adeptness with watercolour, creating contemplative images
with enviable economy, revealing distinct qualities of light found only in the far Northern
landscape.
There are many varied styles on show, but running through the whole exhibition is a sublime
portrayal of both the landscape and the spirit of Northern Scotland. Highly recommended.

January sees a clutch of Oscar hopefuls screening in the UK - foremost among these
is perhaps BIRDMAN [2] (01 JAN), in which MICHAEL KEATON plays an ageing (arent
we all) former super-hero actor trying to reclaim some glory - supported ably by ZACH
GALIFIANAKIS and by all accounts a towering EDWARD NORTON. Eds namesake Graham
may have virtually ignored Keaton on his BBC couch, but weve a suspicion the Academy
wont The fragile Brit playing a challenged intellectual award may be earmarked for B
Cumberbatchs Imitation Game, but hes got competition in THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING
[3] (01 JAN) with EDDIE REDMAYNE playing Stephen Hawking. Weirdest award contender
might just be FOXCATCHER [4] (09 JAN), the story of two Olympic wrestler siblings
(CHANNING TATUM and MARK RUFFALO) and a millionaire wrestling fanatic played by
a very unfamiliar STEVE CARELL. On the rails but dont let it go un-noticed, is the CLINT
EASTWOOD directed AMERICAN SNIPER [5] (16 JAN) with BRADLEY COOPER in what
many have dubbed the best Iraq war drama to date. Fans of the Coen brothers among
others will be familiar with the mighty acting guns of JK SIMMONS and he gets to flex
those in WHIPLASH [6] (16 JAN), plaguing MILES TELLER by demanding the jazz drummers
perfection. OSCAR ISAAC was perhaps unfairly overlooked for an award last year for Inside
Llewyn Davis, but hes back in contention again in A MOST VIOLENT YEAR [7] (23 JAN)
as is JESSICA CHASTAIN in JC Chandors highly rated complex slow-burn crime drama
set in the 1981 NYC crime world. Outweird-ing Foxcatcher will be cult-ish crime comedydrama, INHERENT VICE [8] (29 JAN), an adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel set in
the seedy underbelly of seventies L.A. Paul Thomas Anderson writes and directs which
makes it nailed-on for excellence. As does the cast - the brilliant JOAQUIN PHOENIX, plus
JOSH BROLIN, OWEN WILSON, KATHERINE WATERSTON, REESE WITHERSPOON, BENICIO
DEL TORO and JENA MALONE. And music from Radioheads Johnny Greenwood.
Awards? Why not?
Perhaps not so likely so be in the gong hunt, but compelling celluloid anyway would include
ENEMY [9] (02 JAN), an adventurous thriller with JAKE GYLLENHAAL (twice) and a
giant spider; INTO THE WOODS [10] (09 JAN) - Rob Marshalls star-studded take on
Sondheims fantasy musical - with MERYL STREEP, EMILY BLUNT, JAMES CORDEN, ANNA
KENDRICK, CHRIS PINE and JOHNNY DEPP; EX MACHINA [11] (23 JAN), a spot the AI
Sci-fi thriller with DOMHNALL GLEESON, OSCAR ISAAC and ALICIA VIKANDER; TRASH
[12] (29 JAN) - ROONEY MARA and MARTIN SHEEN star in Brazilian-British drama-thriller
written by RICHARD CURTIS, no less; and Disneys follow up to the phenomenal Frozen,
BIG HERO 6 [13] (30 JAN), a surprisingly good 3D computer-animated superhero comedy
film with a Japanese Tetsujin 28 flavour.

14

More in danger of flopping than award winning - yet probably to quite a number of folks
taste nonetheless will be TAKEN 3 (08 JAN) - LIAM NEESON (aah) returns with yet more
bad luck and a different implication of the title; KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE (29

JAN) - originally slated for summer release and mysteriously put back to the January slot,
this Matthew Vaughnhelmed spy film features COLIN FIRTH, SAMUEL L JACKSON, MARK
STRONG, MICHAEL CAINE and TARON EGERTON. Sounds good on paper - maybe it will
be; Last but not least is the mildly baffling US Brit-flick with JOHNNY DEPP and GWYNETH
PALTROW, MORTDECAI (23 JAN). Yes, we all wish Terry Thomas was still alive to do this, but
he just isnt, and were not entirely sure Le Depp is the most obvious substitute.
As youll know by now, were rarely averse to singing the praises of Tilda Swinton, but even
she will agree that she wouldnt be where she is today were it not for the genius that was
DEREK JARMAN [1]. A visionary in just about every sense of the word and, for those of
us lucky enough to have met him, an unforgettable inspiration, he died far too young, but
thankfully left a richly ambitious cinematic legacy. And you can see some of it in a special
Derek Jarman season running at EDEN COURT through Jan and Feb. Highlights include:
JUBILEE (26 JAN), his take on the punk phenomenon, fuelled by revolution, fetishism
and decadence; CARAVAGGIO (11 JAN), telling the story of the artists rocknroll life
with images as exquisite as the paintings and Jarmans first feature length collaboration
with Swinton; SEBASTIANE (28 JAN), Jarmans first feature, directed with Paul Humfress,
presents the controversial, sensual, sexualised story of the 4th century Praetorian Guard
whose human goodness leads to humiliation and martyrdom; BLUE (21 JAN), made when
AIDS complications had rendered him partially blind, its the most experimental of Jarmans
features a 79-minute shot of a blue background, with narrators giving voice to Jarmans
fearless confrontation of sight loss and imminent mortality. There are also screenings of
Jarmans Super 8 shorts, music films and a talk from James Mackay. For full details of an
unmissable season, see the Eden Court Film Guide in the centre pages. See all the Jarman

Time To Learn?
KIDS

Presumably, the assumption being that kids will still be occupied with building Star Wars
spaceships out of Lego or watching Frozen for the thousandth time, theres not too much on
offer in the way of out-of-the-house entertainment, though if youre quick you might just catch
one of the final performances of ALADDIN at EDEN COURT which runs until 04 JAN.
Maybe its time to think about the long game and get the young uns (and the not so young)
to sign up for one of the plethora of classes run by EDEN COURT CREATIVE, which start up
again on MON 12 JAN. Their ambassador is, perhaps unsurprisingly, KAREN GILLAN, a former
student whos proved that getting involved might just lead to very good things indeed. She
says: I did a lot of my initial training at Eden Court, including my Higher Drama and my LAMDA
(London Academy of Dramatic Arts) certification. The tutors were always there to support me. I
had my first real experience of acting via Eden Court CREATIVE and it was their knowledge and
experience that encouraged me to take the next step and pursue a career in the arts. Eden
Court CREATIVE is a great resource for everyone in the Highlands both young and old. If you
havent tried it yet, start participating and get Creative - you never know where it might lead.
A glowing recommendation then and there are a whole range of drama classes from those
aimed at 35 year olds, right up to the aforementioned LAMDA grades. If your talents lie
elsewhere there are also loads of creative writing classes, as well as filmmaking, play writing
and all manner of dance-related activities. If youre looking to inject a little freshness into your
life this year, or perhaps even embark on a path to being the next Doctor Who assistant and a
world-famous actor, this might just be the place to start.
Check out the Eden Court website at eden-court.co.uk for more.

Take It Easy
What with all your festive skylarking to get over, its perhaps just as well that January
isnt offering up too many musical excuses to go a bit barmy, so perhaps its best to
look upon the month as a time to relax. Or perhaps to immerse yourselves in styles of
music that you havent explored before. Fans of Strictly and its elegant waltzes will
surely be enchanted by the RSNO VIENNESE NIGHT at EDEN COURT on 08 JAN. No
actual dancing, but in your head youll be able to swish and swirl to a fine collection of
traditional Viennese favourites including On the Beautiful Blue Danube, the Emperor
Waltz, Pizzicato Polka and many, many more, all marshalled by the definitely-not-inStar-Trek conductor, Jean-Claude Picard.
An interesting take on classical performance comes from the KALEIDOSCOPE
SAXOPHONE QUARTET [1] at INVERNESS TOWN HOUSE on 13 JAN. The group
encapsulates a vast array of artistic skills: Award-winning saxophonist and composer
John Rittipo-Moore; multi-faceted musician and photographer/film-maker Ian Dingle;
folk and jazz-influenced contemporary saxophonist Guy Passey; and multipleaward-winning chamber musician and concert soloist Sally MacTaggart. Theyll be
performing a selection of works arranged or written for saxophone quartet by Grieg,
Rameau, Piazzolla, Dvorak, Gershwin and Debussy, as well as new works by Samuel
Quartermaine Smith, Michael Nyman, Barbara Thompson and Will Gregory.
For over twenty years the GOULD PIANO TRIO [2] have remained at the forefront of the
chamber music scene, having been launched into an international career by winning the
first Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. Their performance at NAIRN
COMMUNITY CENTRE on 16 JAN will feature works by Brahms and Schubert among others.
More classical delights back at the TOWN HOUSE on 29 JAN as German pianist
MARAIKE BRNING [3] returns by popular demand for a lunchtime concert on
29 JAN at 1pm. She has selected a special programme and the centrepiece of her
performance will be the Suite of Ten Pieces from Romeo and Juliet, Op 75 by Prokofiev.
This will be contrasted with a selection from Brahms Six Klavierstucke, Op 118.
Fans of Irish music will no doubt be thrilled at the prospect of seeing THE DUBLIN
LEGENDS [4] at EDEN COURT on 26 JAN. Sean Cannon & Eamonn Campbell were
members of The Dubliners for close to 30yrs while Gerry O Connor joined them for part
of their 50th Anniversary Tour. Theyre joined by Paul Watchorn, one of Irelands top 5
string banjo players, who toured with Derek Warfields Sons Of Erin for many years.
If you want to start your year off by doing the right thing, youll head along to MAD HATTERS on FRI 02 & SAT
03 JAN for the special FOOD BANK FUNDRAISER events, while the EAGLE BAR in INVERNESS kicks off its
BATTLE OF THE BANDS 2015 competition this month. No details of either yet, but keep an eye out for names
when theyre announced at: whatonhighlands.com

CIRCUS OF HORRORS: Dr Haze

Strathpeffer Pavilion, Wed 04 Feb

Expect all kinds of high jinks when CIRCUS

OF HORRORS comes to STRATHPEFFER
PAVILION on 04 FEB. Having taken Britains
Got Talent by storm therell be plenty of new
fans for the show, entitled THE NIGHT OF
THE ZOMBIE. But what can you expect?
We asked COH creator and the undead
ringmaster, DR HAZE, to tell us more:
How did Circus Of Horrors first come about?
I was born & brought up in a circus. I ran away
from the circus to join a rock band and a few years
later the Circus of Horrors was born as a sort
of combination of those. I was originally doing a
small version in rock clubs & universities but after
meeting Gerry Cottle- ironically at a funeral- we
decided to combine our forces and the Monster
was born.
Was someone like Jim Rose in America an
inspiration? If not him, then who? Jim Rose
wasnt an inspiration, that came more from rock
music people like Marc Bolan, Alice Cooper and
more recently Rob Zombie. Circus Archaos was
also an influence it was the first of the alternative
circuses, before Cirque Du Soleil.

28

Do people approach you to join or do you go

out scouting oddbods? Yes they often do, its a
cool show, young circus artistes always want to
join and so do most Freak performers.
What sort of qualities do you have to have to
be a member of COH? You have to be of a very
high standard, its definitely top end, some of the
acts are from Cirque Du Soleil & lots have had a
lot of TV exposure.
How many people are there in the troupe?
26 performers & musicians so a very big &
spectacular production.
We imagine each production must be
something of a mammoth undertaking. How long
do the shows take to prepare? The planning takes
a few months. We rehearse for a very gruelling
week, but keep adding things every day until its
perfect.
Tell us about The Night Of The Zombie. The
whole world loves Zombies so it is great subject
matter; its a follow on from last years show which
was about the plague of 1665. This time centuries
later the blood of two virgins seeps into the burial
grounds & awakes the now Zombie-like Plague
victims & the undead walk the earth again.
This and many MORE interviews - at
whatsonhighlands.com

How much of you yearns for

the golden age of vaudeville
and freak shows? I think the
golden age of vaudeville & freak
shows IS back, people rebelling
against our politically correct
lives & doing what they want to
do, delightfully decadent days.
What made you decide to go
on Britains Got Talent? Were
you gutted not to win? I didnt
enjoy it but it was good to say
we are the only Circus ever to
reach the finals & the show that
people still remember, so profile
wise it was great.
We hear theres now even
an Italian incarnation of COH.
Tell us more. The Circus of
Horrors has been copied by
other companies illegally as I
own the trade mark. An Italian
Circus decided to do it properly
though and hired the name of
me & let me direct their version
of the show.
Youve gathered together
a quite astonishing array of
performers, but is there any
particular strange talent you
dream about stumbling across?
Yes, watch this space

Fair Fa Your Honest,

Sonsie Face
Youd have thought that the Independence Referendum and/or Year of Homecoming
would have given fresh vitality to a public celebration of BURNS NIGHT on 25 JAN, but
that doesnt seem to be the case this year, with just one event really worth whooping
to the rooftops for and that being EDEN COURTs HAGGIS, BEASTS & TATTIES.
Devised and directed by Eden Court CREATIVE, the event is part of Scotlands Winter
Festivals (us either), kicking off with an excellently named Haggis Hoedown in Falcon
Square, followed by a procession to Eden Court for bite-size performances inspired
by the Beasts of Burns poetry performed by drama, dance & music groups from all
over the Highlands. There will also be a selection of Scottish food and drink stalls from
local suppliers on offer, and a special Burns Night menu in the Eden Court restaurant
from 5pm.
Finally, join the Tattie Band for a Grand Burns Ceilidh where you can dance along
with a Haggis (come on, weve all done it) to the Dashing White Sergeant and Strip
the Willow.
For details of any other Burns Night shindigs should they arise (and were sure they
will), make sure to check our website: whatsonhighlands.com

Away from all that Rabbie malarkey, 2015 for most of us is going to be about surviving
the dread hand of austerity. So expect to get plenty of ideas at the free ROWAN
WASTE ACTION UPCYCLING EVENT at MERKINCH COMMUNITY CENTRE on 17 JAN
from 11am-4pm. Helping you to turn things you no longer need into something new,
therell be Mend Or Make workshops, swap shop tables, stalls and more, including
lessons on bike repair from the folk at Velocity. Plus kids activities and music from the
excellently named Trash The Orchestra. More details in the ad on P7.

Finally, crime fans will be heading to IRONWORKS on 20 JAN, when best-selling author
PETER MAY will be talking about his new book Runaway and signing copies too.

Rivalries Renewed
EL KESSOCKO bookends the month as ROSS COUNTY host ICT in Dingwall on 01 JAN,
with the reverse fixture in Inverness taking place on 31 JAN. As usual, the form book
can be expected to be hurled out of the window as both teams chase points for different
reasons. Recent weeks may not have seen much improvement in Countys results, but
its obvious theres some talent there, even if it isnt gelling yet. ICT meanwhile are
confounding all doubters with a marvellous mix of pragmatism and verve, the prospect of
European football next season a very real possibility.
Thats actually not the only sporting derby taking place this month, with shintys LOVAT
CUP [1] on 02 JAN between BEAULY and LOVAT a rivalry once described as so keen that
a cold stream ran between them. The competition dates right back to 1904 and only the
Camanachd Cup Final attracts more spectators. All holders Lovat need is a draw to retain
the trophy, but playing away at BRAEVIEW PARK, BEAULY will ensure they dont have it all
their own way. Throw-up is 1pm.
The World Orienteering Championships come to the Highlands later in the year, but if
you want to get a feel for it ahead of everyone else, theres a Sunday ORIENTEERING
TRAINING EVENT [2] specially designed for beginners & families organised by Badenoch
& Strathspey Orienteering Club. Its at BADENOCH CENTRE, KINGUSSIE on SUN 25 JAN
and costs 4. More details at basoc.org.uk
A mention too for the Inverness netball team NESSIE BEES [3], who are enjoying some
success this season, to such an extent that people are fighting for places. The club is
taking two teams to the tournament at the beginning of Jan in Dingwall and hopes to have
two teams entered into the league next season providing more opportunities for all the
club members to compete. The club trains on a Monday night at MILLBURN ACADEMY in
Inverness from 68pm, has a facebook presence through Inverness Netball or Netball
North and has a website (invernessnetball.co.uk). Theyre always looking for people to
come along and train with them and Netball North is planning to run a Sunday Summer
League at Millburn using the outdoor court, so if youre interested please get in touch
with Jermaine McCracken at the Bees website. Why not think of getting a workplace team
together for the summer?

Sugar And Spice

Christmas may be over, but theres still a chance to revisit some of that festive spirit as
THE NUTCRACKER [1] comes to EDEN COURT from 2124 JAN courtesy of the wonderful
SCOTTISH BALLET. Crafted especially for Scotland, this version of Tchaikovskys classic tale
features original scenarios by Lev Ivanov and Marius Petipa and original Philip Prowse designs
reimagined by Lez Brotherston, bringing back a production first acclaimed forty years ago. The
yarn, surely fuelled by too much cheese/brandy, has young Clara falling asleep and dreaming
that she helps the Nutcracker Prince to defeat an army of giant mice. She is rewarded by a
visit to the glittering Land of Ice and Snow, where snowflakes come to life, sparkling as they
dance - and the magical Kingdom of Sweets - the enchanted Realm of the beautiful Sugar Plum
Fairy. Theres apparently a plush Victoriana vibe to proceedings, which is always welcome.
Rather more contemporary dance comes in the form of the astonishing JASMIN VARDAMON
and her company who present PARK [2] at EDEN COURT on 31 JAN. Its set in the park of
the title, a place of refuge from ordinary life where eight characters play, fight, fall in love
and learn to survive. In this playground of relationships, young lovers wrestle in a historic
fountain, a graffiti artist sprays his story, a busker finds his only appreciative audience in
a bag lady and a flag-waving bully rants worn out political beliefs. Their stories intertwine
creating a modern day fairytale that is alternately sharp, funny and cruel.
If thats given you a taste for rooting around at the boundaries of expectation, youll no doubt
be cheered by the prospect of the return of CIRCUS OF HORRORS [3] to the Highlands,
this time to STRATHPEFFER PAVILION on 04 FEB. The company goes from strength to
strength having reached the finals of Britains Got Talent and last year, a series of dates
in London made it the first circus to appear in a West End Theatre for a century. The
latest incarnation, THE NIGHT OF THE ZOMBIE, is set in 2020, in a decrepit and corpseridden London plagued by a swamp of zombies. In a city ruled by the undead, it climaxes
in an awesome flaming apocalypse. The story twists and turns with grisly murders and
sensational shocks all interwoven with some of the greatest and most bizarre circus acts
on earth, including sword swallowers, knife throwers, daredevil balancing acts, astounding
aerialists, a demon dwarf, a Guinness World Record-holding hairculean hair-hanging
beauty, Sinister Sisters, gyrating and fire limbo-ing acrobats. What more could you want?
Not perhaps as shocking, but just as groundbreaking at the time was Willy Russells 1982
scouse musical BLOOD BROTHERS [4]. It tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who,
separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful
consequences. A tried and trusted plot, but one thats carried off with panache thanks to fine
writing and memorable songs. No surprise that Bill Kenwrights original production surpassed
10,000 performances in Londons West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that
milestone. Its coming to EDEN COURT from 0207 FEB and will show you why it deserves its
place in the canon of modern classics and it stars MARTI PELLOW and MAUREEN NOLAN!!

EATING OUT

Penta Hotel

63 Academy Street, Inverness

As someone who thinks Mackies
Haggis & Cracked Black Pepper
crisps are the pinnacle of the eating
experience, Im probably not the
absolute best person to be doing
food reviews, but hey, needs must
December offers a cold damp
lunchtime and the mildly grim
Academy St is populated with
weather-hunched pedestrians and
headlights-on traffic - the light is
already fading and its not quite 2pm.
The Penta Hotel - formerly the
perhaps-too-clinical-for-its-own-good
Ramada Encore - sits solidy midway
up the street glancing longingly left
to the Ironworks and wistfully right
up towards the gaudy delights of
the Eastgate, seldom bothering to
look straight over at the utilitarian
Farraline Park.
The doors slide pleasingly open for
us - two sets no less to keep out
the cold and fumes and noise. And
suddenly were away - coloured
lights and wood and metal and
carpet and New York brickwork wash
over us and we forget we came in

01463 240 089

via Inverness. There are welcoming

smiles from behind the Duran Duran
video shoot, brushed steel and
purple floodlights, in-the-round bar
and a quick scan around reveals
plenty of quiet niches and nooks for
hiding away in.
We choose an unpopular table unloved as it is down the corridor
to the conveniences, brighter lit and
with windowed daylight - perfect
for our photographic needs but we
jealously eye dim tables and loungy
sofas areas. Again, needs must
My dining partner has flaxen black
hair, petal lips of delicate pink and
one too many fingers such a trove of
treasures is Inverness. The lunchtime
menu is a sassy, blunt version of the
fuller night-time proposal - but we can
only eat one meal each so why do we
need to choose from twenty? One
meal each will tell us - and perhaps
more importantly you - all we need to
know.
This menu is simple - soups,
sandwiches, burgers, pizzas. But
with a fun, confident approach - not

the slightly apologetic tone you find

some places. My general belief is
that most menus modestly hide
their best dishes away under the
plainest titles, dressing up their
weakest aspects in the glitz and
glam of fancy monickers. Those
not drawn onto the rocks by the
sirens of the highlight dishes are
oft rewarded with a dish of culinary
beauty skittishly protesting what,
this old thing? Why, I threw on the
first thing I could find. Or not, as
the case may be.
In this case, the sirens include
things like the Penta Heart Attack
Burger* and the Monte Cristo
Sandwich. We follow my rule and
order simple. To start, Sweet
Potato and Chilli Soup (of the day)
and BBQ Chicken Wings. There is
a lion on the lip of my soup bowl
providing an interesting diversion
for the otherwise reveal-little photo,
and the soup offers a little bite too the inevitable rich sweetness of the
yam finished with a nice kick of chilli
pepper. Unspectacularly nice.
The chicken provides more

entertainment - the lemon fingerwipes provided should have warned

us - knife and fork were tried, but this
is resolutely a finger dish, so only
once the plunge was taken could
the sticky pleasure be enjoyed. My
companion was rather wishing for
a shower after all that but seemed
content nonetheless.
Staff walk by and smile, a gilted gekko
smiles too from its perch on the
sill and we swap news and browse
the designer photo & art collage on
the walls. Thoughts turn to main
courses. Penta Veggieburger with
Hummus and French Fries and
Penta Cheeseburger with Bacon
and same. *Turns out the Heart
Attack burger is basically this but
twice, stacked. Ouch.
Youll have noticed by now the current
vogue for PR and marketing people to
start sentences without fail with the
word so - where it used to mean in
order that or amplify an adjective it
preceeded - this is something I detest.
There, I said it.
So, the Veggieburger is in fact
two big plump Quorn-type patties
(phew, beanburgers are such a
disappointment) with a modicum
of salad and dressing added. Great
chips (rather than stringy fries as
hinted) and a pretty decent coleslaw.
Didnt notice the hummus, but this
was such a big mouthful and a
satifying meal I have no complaint.
The Cheeseburger looked much the
same save for the single, thicker,
patty - chips and coleslaw again.
As this proved more than enough
nourishment for my accomplice,
one can only shudder at the meat
sweats that the aforementioned
Cardiac burger might induce. Takes
all sorts though.
The modest numbers as we came
in are swelled somewhat by now afternoon meet-ers and a few more
eaters. The staff are unhurried
but efficient - after a long-ish delay
before our starters, the whole thing
trucks along nicely, drinks offered
and taken, courses cleared and
replaced in good time.

Desserts! We demand desserts! I

so wish I was that person. The sexy

Lemon and Lime Cheesecake was

sadly unavailable so subbed with a
straight Judes Ice Cream - what Jude
thought of that we didnt find out, but
no crying was heard anyway. What
was advertised as separate pots in
fact was presented quite nicely in
a wafer basket with three scoops vanilla, chocolate and honeycomb and a flourish of blackcurrant coulis
to interest the camera. Nice in an
unremarkable, ice-creamy way.
More concerted was the Dark
Chocolate Truffle Torte with Cream
- a modest slice of very intense,
slightly gooey pleasure with a
slightly salty bite to the topping.
Good. Cream was squirty (hmmm),
coulis was as above, strawberry
garnish was actually welcome
against the strong torte.
Out in the main swim of the place,
there is a plush pool table with wellstocked book-cases, a PS4 with
seats for two and a big screen, and
an arm-chair/sofa area. The menu
offers a slightly dubious peephole for gawping at other patrons
and the toilets attempt humour but
come over all sexist, eschewing the
gender monickers for football and
shopping. I hope that people are
true to their heart and that society
relieves itself along taste not gender
lines but I suspect they dont. The
disabled toilets are labelled space
- didnt know what to make of that!
But Penta Hotel has some LIFE
about it - yay - and is also a hotel that
obviously wants the local lunchtime

guests. You could do worse than to
give them what they want. And tell
them we sent you.

Ken Kelman: Multifarious...

Hands up if you got a multiformat gaming chair for
Christmas .. keep them up if
youve (honestly) used anything
other than the standard chair
format - you know with a seat
on legs or in the case of the
Gioteck RC5 Multi Format
Gaming Chair, which amused
me recently in a catalogue,
a spindle. I have to admit to
being hard pushed to imagine
the multiple formats a chair
can have. As I say, theres the
standard chair .. and I guess
you could remove the legs (or
spindle) and sit the seat directly
on the floor - so thats two
formats .. but now Im stuck. If
you got said chair I assume it
came with pictorial instructions
so youre excluded, but, for
everyone else heres a wee quiz
to keep you amused during this
difficult time between Christmas

and New Year - list all the

formats you think a multi-format
chair could have. Youll need a
pen and some paper to do that,
which brings me nicely to
At work we have multi-function
paper for the photocopier.
Lets see then .. it can be used
as photocopier paper - thats
practically a given .. also you
could put it in a computer
printer - but these days thats
pretty much the same thing.
You could take out individual
sheets and use them for writing
on (like for my wee quiz) .. and
in that role you could write with
pen, crayon, charcoal, pencil,
oil-based pigments and brush,
etc, etc - but really all thats
just writing on it .. and besides
these are not different functions
- theyre all just normal uses for
paper. Again Im stuck .. unless

making little aeroplanes is one

of its purposes .. and even then
thats only 2 - so its more dualpurpose paper than multi.
What worries me then is that
sciences so called multiverse theory - where theres
supposedly an infinite number
of universes co-existing, with
anything that can happen,
happening in at least one of
them i.e. somewhere out
there youre a successful pop
star and Im J.D. Salingers
cousin - is a load of bunkum
based on a scientists gross
mis-understanding of the prefix
multi and there is actually only
two universes which are to all
intents and purposes the same,
except in one of them we all sit
on the floor.
Happy New Year.
