Heat Convection

Tutorial 2
1. Consider a person standing in a breezy room at 20C. Determine the total
rate of heat transfer from this person if the exposed surface area and the
average outer surface temperature of the person are 1.6 m 2 and 29C,
respectively and the convection heat transfer coefficient is 6 W m -2 K-1.
(86.4 W)
2. A 2 in. diameter spherical ball whose surface is maintained at a
temperature of 170F is suspended in the middle of a room at 70F. If the
convection heat transfer coefficient is 12 Btu hr -1 ft-2 -F, determine the rate
of heat transfer from the ball.
(104.64 Btu/hr)
3. A metal plate 0.609 m in height forms the vertical wall of an oven and is at
a temperature of 171.1C. Within the oven is air at a temperature of 93.4C
and atmospheric pressure. Find the heat transfer coefficient and the heat
taken up by air per second per meter width.
(243.4578 J/s.m)
4. The maximum allowable surface temperature of an electrically heated
vertical plate 15 cm high and 10 cm wide is 140C. Estimate the maximum
rate of heat dissipation from both sides of the plate in an atmosphere at
20C.
(26.324 W)
5. Consider a 2 ft x 2 ft thin square plate in a room at 75F. One side of the
plate is maintained at a temperature of 130F, while the other side is
insulated. Determine the rate of heat transfer from the plate by natural
convection if the plate is vertical.

6. A horizontal pipe 0.3 m in diameter is maintained at a temperature of

250C in a room where the ambient air is 15C. Estimate the free
convection heat loss per meter of length.
(1579.213 W/m)
7. A horizontal cylinder of 2.5 cm diameter and 0.6 m length is suspended in
water at 20C. Calculate the rate of heat transfer if the cylinder surface is
at 55C. What would be the rate of heat transfer if the cylinder is
suspended in light oil at 20C? The following properties (at 37.5C) may

8. A 4o cm diameter, 110 cm high cylindrical hot water tank is located in the

bathroom of a house maintained at 20C. The surface temperature of the
tank is measured to be 44C. Taking the surrounding surface temperature
to be also 20C, determine the rate of heat loss from all surfaces of the
tank by natural convection. (20-45)
(133.44 W)
9. Estimate the heat transfer from a 40 W incandescent bulb at 127C to 27
C quiescent air. Approximate the bulb as a 50 mm diameter sphere. What
percentage of the power is lost by free convection?

diameter spherical heater whose surface temperature is maintained at
85C. Determine how long the heater should be kept on. (20-49)

11. Water is boiling in a 12-cm-deep pan with an outer diameter of 25 cm that
is placed on top of stove. The ambient air and the surrounding surfaces are
at a temperature of 250C. Assuming the entire pan to be at an average
temperature of 980C, determine the rate of heat loss from the cylindrical
side surface of the pan to the surroundings by a) natural convection b) If
the water is boiling at a rate of 2 kg/h at 100 0C, determine the ratio of the
heat lost from the side surfaces of the pan to that by the evaporation of
