Abstract: The present paper is a study of a new two variable analogue of Hermite polynomials
which seems more natural than that of Hermite polynomials of two variables defined and studied
by M.A. Khan and G.S. Abukhammash [1].
AMS (MOS) subject classification (2010): Primary 47F05, Secondary 33C45.
Key word: Operational representations, generating functions, recurrence relations, Rodrigues formula,
special properties, relationship with Hermite polynomials of one variable and expansion of
Legendre polynomials of one and two variables in a series of Hermite polynomials of two
variables.

DEFINITION

Hermite polynomials of two variable H n ( x, y ) is defined as follows:

n
2

(1)r n! H n 2r ( x) x 2 r y n 2r
r! (n 2 r )!
r =0

H n ( x, y) =

(1.1)

where H n (x ) is the well-known Hermite polynomial of one variable [4].

The definition (1.1) is equivalent to the following explicit representation of H n ( x, y ) :
r

n n
2 2 r

H n ( x, y) = (2 xy) n

r =0 s =0

1 1
( n) 2 r 2 s 2 2

(1.2)

In terms of double hypergeometric function, Hermite polynomials of two variables can be written as

n n 1
:0;0
2 , 2 2 : ;;
H n ( x, y) = (2 xy) n F02:0;0

: ;;

x2 y2

(1.3)

where for right hand side of (1.3), it may be recalled that the definition of a more general double hypergeometric
function ( than the one defined by Kampe de Feriet ) in a slightly modified notation [ see, for example, Srivastava and
Panda [5, p.423. Eq.(26) ]:

| x |1/( p l ) | y |1/( p l ) < 1,

(1.5)

Although the double hypergeometric function defined by (1.3) reduces to the Kampe de Feriet function in the special
case

q = k and m = n,
yet it is usually referred to in the literature as Kampe de Ferit function.
The paper contains generating functions, recurrence relations, Rodrigues formula, relationship with Hermite
polynomials of one variable, some special properties, expansion of Legendre polynomials of one and two variables in
a series of Hermite polynomials of two variables and binomial and trinomial operator representations for two variable
Hermite polynomials H n ( x, y ) .

RECURRENCE RELATIONS

The following recurrence relations hold for H n ( x, y ) :

H n ( x, y ) = 2ny H n1 ( x, y ) 2n ( n 1) x H n 2 ( x, y )
x

(4.1)

H n ( x, y ) = 2 nx H n1 ( x, y ) 2n( n 1) y H n 2 ( x, y)

(4.2)

RELATION BETWEEN

H n ( x, y )

AND

H n (x)

Hermite polynomials of two variables H n ( x, y ) is related by modified Hermite polynomial of one variable H n (x )
by the following relation
n

xy
H n ( x, y ) = ( x 2 y 2 ) 2 H n
x2 y 2

Now

518

(5.1)

Mumtaz Ahmad Khan et al., World Applied Programming, Vol (2), No (12), December 2012.

H n ( x, y) = ( 1) n H n ( x, y )

(5.2)

For y =0, (5.3) reduces

H n ( x,0) = x n H n (0) (5.3)

and for x =0, we get

H n (0, y ) = y n H n (0) (5.4)

But

1
H 2 n (0) = (1)n 2 2n
2 n
H 2 n1 0 = 0.

(5.5)

So using (5.5) in (5.3) and (5.4), we obtain

1
H 2 n ( x,0) = (1)n (2 x ) 2n
2 n
H 2 n1 ( x,0) = 0

(5.6)

and

1
H 2 n (0, y) = (1)n (2 y ) 2n
2 n
H 2 n 1 (0, y) = 0

(5.7)

For x = y =0, (5.1) becomes

H n (0,0) = H n (0)

(5.8)

which in the light of (5.5), gives

1
H 2n (0,0) = (1)n 2 2n = H 2 n (0)
2 n
H 2n 1 (0,0) = 0 = H 2 n 1 (0)

(5.9)

VIII. BINOMIAL AND TRINOMIAL OPERATOR REPRESENTATIONS

In a recent paper in 2008, M.A. Khan and A.K. Shukla [3] obtained binomial and trinomial operator representations of
certain polynomials. Using their technique we have obtained certain results of binomial and trinomial operator
representation type for modified two variables Hermite polynomials H n ( x, y ) by using their Rodrigues formula.
Here we need the following results of [3]:
