Kuya Mel, all smile welcoming us.

Praying over Kuya Mel

After the joint breakfast on

August 10, 2013 a good number of brothers and sisters
from the community lead by
the governance team visited
then AGL Mel Tapispisan at
his residence at Humay-humay,
LLC. Members of Mels action
group (in formation) were also
there.
To recall, Kuya Mel underwent an operation last July 11,
2013 removing a big mass
from his belly. Although the
prognosis is not good
(Osteocarcinoma), Mel looked
much better than before his
confinement. He is currently
recuperating well and doing his
normal everyday routine. Although this time his diet and
work load is strictly moni-

tored by his loving wife Lenny.

The ladies had a chat with
Lenny who still could not help
being teary eyed while relating
kuyas condition.
Before leaving, the group
under the leadership of Brothers Nelson Dauz and Jun Gula
prayed over brother Mel. They
also assured the couple of their
prayers for the healing of Kuya
Mel.
The overwhelming support
shown by the brothers and sisters to Kuya Mel and Ate Lenny
is a great moral booster for
them at this testing time of their
faith journey.

The world may not revolve around you but other peoples lives do. Take care of yourself for a lot of
people consider you their light. Keep shining!

Teaching

Tithe and Tithing

Fr. Martin Okafor-Ilozue CSSp - BCBP Mactan BCLP19

Fr. Martin

once one has decided to voluntarily

give tithe to the
Church or to an organization, it would
amount to making an
honest effort to fulfill
this self chosen obligation and to do it
joyously.

Tithing is an age old practice among Judaisers and also in sequel transferred to
Christianity. This is a practice where 10% of ones annual farm produce or in the
present day ones monthly income is given to the temple custodians or the ministers of ones religious affiliation.
In the book of Leviticus, 27; 30 34, the Lord ordered Moses to tell the people
about the issue of their tithing to Him. One tenth of all the produce of the land,
whether grain or fruit, belongs to the Lordone of every ten domestic animals
belong to the Lord. One may begin to wonder what happened to all those foods
and animals that were collected annually. They were to belong to the sons (tribe of
Levi) of Aaron who has no land given to them in the Promised land, but should be
priests ministering to other tribes of Israel. Joshua 13: 14Moses had given no
land to the tribe of Levi. As the Lord had told Moses, they were to receive as their
possession a share of the Sacrifices burned on the altar to the Lord God of Israel.
From this passage you will begin to see the emergence of the Catholic priesthood
as being sorely dependent on the offerings in the Church for sustenance.
Going back to tithing of ten percent, Abraham gave tithe to Melchizedek ,Genesis 14: 17 to 20, and Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the loot he
had recovered. Melchizedek thanked God and blessed Abraham.
In the Acts of Apostles, now in the New Testament, the style of tithing seemed
to change, instead of paying ten percent, people bring all they had to the Apostles,
Acts 4: 32 and when Ananias and Sapphira tried to cheat by not submitting all they
had, they died. Acts 5: 1 to 11.
Today in the Catholic Church, tithing to some extent had been replaced by voluntary offering of the faithful at the mass. Reason being that since the aim of tithe
is primarily to maintain the ministers and take care of the worshipping place, and
also to carry on the mission of God, the offertory money does the same thing. The
issue left is, do people calculate their annual offering to be the same amount with
ten percent of their total annual income? That will be begging the question, but
the Church no longer legislate that it should be so.
Some people conscientiously still pay tithe to the Church, their religious leaders
and to different religious organization like the BCBP. It is understood that this is a
voluntary action taken by someone with the aim to help the Church or covenanted organizations. Since most of the organization do not practice offering, tithing come easily as means of getting money to keep the organization going. Toeing
the line of the Catholic Church, these Catholic organizations do not ask for 10%,
but a voluntary amount an individual decides to give.
So it follows that once one has decided to voluntarily give tithe to the Church
or to an organization, it would amount to making an honest effort to fulfill this self
chosen obligation and to do it joyously. When Abraham gave tithe to Melchizedek, he received blessing from him, today if you give tithe, no doubt you will be
blessed by God

Those who joyfully leave everything in Gods hand will eventually see Gods hand in everything.
Worry ends where faith begins. Stay happy with God.

Chapter Heads Message

CH Guy and Eden Ceniza

Unity is Strength

Last month we had to

effect
minor
realignment of our action
groups as a result of the
mid-year evaluation conducted by the governance sometime in June.
At this time when attendance to chapter regular
activities is dwindling,
tithe collection is below
target, and some members are going in-active,
there is a need to continuously reach out to
our members who shied
away from the community for reasons they
only know.
I strongly believe that
each one of us has a

share of such responsibility. We cannot argue that

in a way BCBP is a blessing;
our continuous presence is
the
testament to this.
Thus the best return we
can give is responding to
the question What can I
do? instead of seeking;
What can I get?
In unity there is joy and
eventually strength that
will equip us in the daily
struggles of our lives. Let
us therefore be an instrument for unification rather
than division.
I hope and pray that as
we celebrate our 20th Anniversary we will be one in
looking back the 2 decades

of transforming our lives

thru the BCBP way of life
and may ponder on;

feel the pain of being betrayed. For we know how

it is to scrimp on our
hardly earned net income
to meet the ever increasing demands of living. Yet a
few have enjoyed the
amount which we needed
more. So sad to wake up
to this harsh reality.
Yet Jesus assures us that
He is a just God. He says:
For whoever makes himself out to be great will be
humbled, and whoever
humbles himself will be
great.
The time of reckoning
has dawned in our country

because always God intervenes for His people.

For whenever we intercede for our country and
our people God listens.
For He says: If my people would humble themselves and pray, I will heal
their land.
Lord we continue to
pray for our country, for
the conversion of our
people especially those
whom governance of our
country is entrusted.
Keep watch over us, we
pray.

Have

I transformed
myself as I quest to
change the face of
business?

How can I give light to

the community if I will

not bring the torch?
Be counted on as we
unify ourselves in the
preparation of our 20th
Anniversary celebration on
Oct. 12, 2013.

Hypocrites

Nery Gula

The Gospel readings

for the last week of August spoke of the hypocrites in Jesus time. He
admonished
them
strongly as they enjoyed
life while making the life
of others difficult.
Beating to the same
drumbeat, the Filipino
people are clamoring for
the hypocrites of our
time to clean their acts,
to step down from the
pedestal of power that
they used to further
their own interests.
As we point our fingers to the culprits, we

On need for the church to evangelize:

"We need to avoid the spiritual sickness of a

church that is wrapped up in its own world: when a

church becomes like this, it grows sick. It is true
that going out on to the street implies the risk of
accidents happening, as they would to any ordinary
man or woman. But if the church stays wrapped
up in itself, it will age. And if I had to choose between a wounded church that goes out on to the
streets and a sick, withdrawn church, I would definitely choose the first one."
Pope Francis
To have God in your life does not mean sailing on a boat with no storms rather it means having a
boat that no storm could sink.
