A cold day on the playground

Council to act on topics

ranging from Route 70
business development
to Pinelands Library
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
In 2014, Medford Township had
a lot of discussion on a variety of
topics.
In 2015, the township is hoping
to finally take action in a number
of areas.
Mayor Chris Buoni said 2015
will be a busy one for council as
the township looks to finally
move on topics such as changes to
the Route 70 business corridor,
Pinelands Branch Library and
the hiring of a new township
manager.
With the year expected to be active, Buoni said residents will
have plenty of opportunities to be
involved in the changes happening in the township.
We're going to be engaging the
public a lot this year, Buoni said.

Liana Lui, Andre de Lara wed

Liana Lui of Medford and
Andre de Lara of Philadelphia
were married Saturday Dec. 13 at
Braddocks Tavern in Medford in
a non-denominational ceremony
by officiant Rev. Kenneth Denski.
The parents of the bride are Hee
and Heidi Lui of Medford. The
mother of the groom is Salud de
Lara of Philadelphia. This wedding was out of the ordinary as
the couple invited guests to an engagement party and surprised
them by getting married instead.
The couple sent out formal engagement party invites letting
guests know to dress up semi-formally. The only guests who knew
it was a wedding were immediate
family to both sides. The ceremony and reception were held in the
Tamberson Room of Braddocks
Tavern. Guests enjoyed the surprise with seeing a giant chalkboard sign displayed as they
walked into the lower Tamberson. The groom was with both
families greeting guests.

Township plans to grant easement to Lake Pine Colony Club,

allowing access to lake through township-owned property
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
For most people, a 20-foot plot of grass
nestled near Lake Pine may not seem like a
big deal.
To Lake Pine Colony Club officials, it is
crucial to safety and maintenance of their
lake.
Medford Township is planning to grant
an easement to the Lake Pine Colony Club
for use of a 20-foot long area of townshipowned land, allowing the club access to the
lake.
The portion of property comes from
what was originally a 60-foot wide strip of
land along Park Road near Lake Pine. In
1996, the property was divided into three,
20-foot sections. Two of those sections were
granted to neighboring property owners on
either side of the strip. Lake Pine Colony
Club officials thought the third portion
was their property.

It was misunderstood by the colony

club, given there were neighboring properties, that they own the center of that,
colony club president Laura Saunders said.
That center was retained by the township.
While the small piece of land doesnt
seem like a big deal to most, it is crucial for
maintenance and safety along Lake Pine.
As the geese come and populate, we
cant go onto private properties, Saunders
said. So this gives us access to certain
areas of our lake to keep it pristine.
Saunders said the colony club also needs
access to the property in case of an emergency.
The Taunton Fire Department uses the
fire lane opposite the lake for their practice, she said. We would still need access
if there would ever be an emergency in
that area.
Mayor Chris Buoni said the colony club
came to the township early in 2014 to ask if

it would vacate the property.

The township had already had discussions with Lake Pine of vacating a portion
of property that really has no public use,
Buoni said. It serves a use for Lake Pine.
Buoni said he has no issue with allowing
the colony club to use the property. The
club has maintained it for a number of
years, despite it being township-owned.
Since it is the townships, we thought
itd be possible since were paying to maintain it and use access, Saunders said.
One problem the township had with vacating the property was it could not simply
hand the property over to the colony club.
Township solicitor Chris Norman said the
township must first offer the parcel to
neighboring properties. Buoni noted a private homeowner could decide to purchase
the land and make the area of the lake inaccessible to the colony club.

Traffic stop leads to possession charge

The following information was
provided by the Medford Township Police Department.
On Dec. 28, a resident of Ark
Road reported to Medford Township Police that sometime between Dec. 20 and Dec. 27, unknown suspects removed an air
conditioning unit valued at approximately $1,500 from the rear
of his residence. The unit was in
working order and attached to the
house at the time of the theft. The
incident is under investigation,
and anyone with information is
asked to contact Medford Police.
On Dec. 27 at 12:37 a.m., Medford Township Police conducted a

motor vehicle stop of a black Nissan on Reeves Station Road after

the vehicle was observed speeding and with a brake light not
functioning.
While speaking with
the driver, officers detected the odor of marijuana emanating from
the interior of the vehicle. The vehicle was
impounded and transported to
police headquarters for further
investigation.
Detectives were granted a
search warrant for the vehicle
through the Burlington County
Superior Court. While searching
the vehicle, officers located just
under one pound of marijuana,

several scales and packaging material commonly used to sell and

distribute narcotics.
The defendant, a 19-year-old
man from Medford Lakes, turned
himself in to Medford
Police at 9 p.m. on Dec.
27.
He was arrested and
charged with possession with the intent to
distribute narcotics, possession of
marijuana over 50 grams, possession of drug paraphernalia,
speeding, possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a
motor vehicle and maintenance
of lamps.
He posted $10,000 bail and was
released pending court.

Medford to continue search for township manager

MEDFORD
Continued from page 1
Medford Township this year will
be progress with ordinance
changes for Route 70. Buoni said
council could begin passing ordinances in line with the planning
board's Route 70 corridor study as
early as this month.
Were excited to implement
that because it will allow businesses to be a little more appropriate, Buoni said. I think the
planning board did a great job in
helping flesh that out.
Some of the recommendations
the planning board made in its
study include increasing the maximum size of businesses along
the Route 70 corridor, allowing
more uses for businesses in the
area and relaxing buffer restrictions to make businesses more
visible from the highway.

&

Council will be discussing the

proposed changes in more detail
in the coming months and can
choose to pass ordinances based
on the recommendations.
Buoni said the changes council
decides to make will be ones it
feels suits the community best.
Were just trying to find
things that fit in the context of
our community, he said.
A number of new businesses
moved into Medford, particularly
Medford Village, in 2014. Buoni
said the economic growth was exciting to see, and he feels it will
continue into 2015.
Weve had a number of business owners express interest in
town, he said. I think were
going to see appropriate growth
for the town.

Burlington County continue discussions on the facility.

The county recently presented
some concepts to council to help
modernize what the county has
previously called an outdated facility.
What we need to take a look at
is what the appropriate way to approach it is, Buoni said. Im
pretty excited about that.
In 2013, freeholders and council
were at odds over who should foot
the bill for renovations to the facility. Buoni said talks between
council and the freeholders were
much more productive last year
than they were previously.
Council is hoping to present a
specific plan to the public before
the end of 2015.

met the person who is right for
Medford Township.
Buoni said council is not in
any rush to fill the position, saying it will take its time to find the
right person. Township clerk
Katherine Burger will continue
as the acting township manager
to begin the year.

Community Development Block

Grant.
If the township receives the
grant from the Burlington County Office of Community Development, it plans to install new sidewalks and parking lot cut curbs to
make the park handicapped-accessible. Council authorized the
application at its Dec. 2 meeting.
Were basically looking to use
that money to get Bende Field in
better condition, Buoni said.
The CDBG grant is administered through Burlington County.
Buoni said the county has been a
big help in the past with grants to
fund improvements to parks.
The county has been very
helpful with that, Buoni said.
They make sure our parks are
available to as many people as
possible.

Deer fence still a debate

DEER
Continued from page 10
ploring an ordinance to better define deer netting in the context of
its fence ordinances.
Last May, the topic of deer netting came to council after there
was some confusion among residents as to whether deer netting
was classified as a fence in township ordinances.
After much discussion, in the

fall, council authorized the creation of a subcommittee to take a

closer look at the issue.
Deer fencing was on a council
agenda in November, but it was
tabled because the subcommittee
had a number of questions come
up about the existing ordinance.
Buoni, who is one of the members of the subcommittee, said it
will continue to study the topic
early in the year. There will likely
be some movement on the subject
in 2015, though Buoni said he
doesn't expect any action for at
least a few more months.

Resolution on easement
to be passed in near future
RESOLUTION
Continued from page 6
Norman said granting an easement would give the colony club
the access it needs and prevent
private landowners from purchasing the land themselves.

It would effectively do the

same thing as the colony club
owning it, Norman said.
In addition to allowing the
colony club to continue to use and
maintain the property, the township could also use it for any reason in the future.
Council is expected to pass a
resolution making the easement
official in the near future.

Medford Branch of AAUW meeting:
