Gingerbread crafting

Township will work

on water, launch
new website, more
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
From the privatization of sanitation services, to a new library
and Town Hall opening, to the
election that determined a
change to township council in
2015, Moorestown had a busy year
in 2014. As the new year begins, it
seems Moorestown will also have
a busy 2015.
One of the biggest topics on
peoples minds in the beginning
of this year will probably be the
condition of the water. In October, two water wells were closed
on Church Street due to trichloropropane, an unregulated compound and possible carcinogen,
being found in the water. The levels were 15 times lower than the
only state that regulates it,
Hawaii, allows, however, the
township closed the wells as a
precaution.

BRIGIT BAUMA/The Sun

Moorestown Childrens Librarian Jennifer Dunne read stories about gingerbread people to children at a gingerbread-themed childrens
craft and story time on Dec. 31. Afterward, the children made a gingerbread-inspired creation. Above, Maya Saltzman, Rosie Rockell,
Gabby Rockell and Clara Craven concentrate on crafting. Children also took time to reflect on 2014 and look toward 2015 with The Sun.

Residents share favorite 2014 memories and plans for the New Year
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
At the Moorestown Library,
parents and children came out to
celebrate the end of the holiday
season and 2014 with stories
about gingerbread people, a gingerbread puppet craft and a visit
from the gingerbread man himself. However, it wasnt all about
gingerbread stories and crafts,
there was talk of the past year as
well as the New Year.
Gabby Rockell, 5, was excited to
share that she started kindergarten this year and really liked
school so far.
I have a great teacher, Gabby
said.
I like my teacher, too, said
her sister Rosie, 8.
Both of the girls also talked
about their New Years resolutions. Rosie wanted to try to keep
her room clean while Gabby
wished to make new friends. Unfortunately for Rosie and Gabby,
two of their friends are moving
away soon.
Rosie expressed her excitement

to stay up for New Years Eve. She
said she got to do it last year, but
this year Gabby gets to join as
well. However, Rosie said with a
giggle that she was doubtful her
sister could stay up that late.
Rosie and Gabbys mom, Deb,
said one her favorite things to

happen in 2014 was going to the

Kentucky Derby. She had never
gone before and said it was a
bucket list thing. She even
dressed up and wore a hat for the
occasion.

New faces join BOE in 2015

Reorganization meeting Jan. 7 will welcome Palko, Casinelli, Shaw

By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
In 2015, there will be some new
faces on the Moorestown Board of

Education. Leaving the board in

2015 were A. Leigh Powell,
Christina Zajac and board president Don D. Mishler. Newly elected to the board are Peter Palko,

Ann Marie Casinelli and Caryn

Shaw.
With the change, there will be
new hats that members of the
board will have to wear. The reorganization meeting for the BOE
will be Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. at the
William Allen Middle School.
During that meeting, leadership
will change, and with that change
is an opportunity to reflect on
what has been the past norm and
what deserves to continue and
what deserves to be reconsidered, Mishler said.
In regard to any new policies
or committees, the new leadership will address them with input
from all board members and the
administration. However no
specifics were provided. If there
is a need for a new policy or committee within the new year, it will
most likely be addressed by the
new board.
Our committee structure has
evolved over the years as circumstances have changed. There is no
reason to expect that the evolution will stop in 2015. Generally,
the committees are built around
significant issues that require the
boards attention by law, by the
commitment of funds and other
important issues, Mishler said.
A big question that residents
might be wondering is, where is
Moorestown Township Public
Schools on the projects with the
bond referendum? The Building
Excellence Bond Referendum,
passed in September, authorized
the district to raise funds through
the sale of bonds to finance improvements to all six of the districts school buildings. ROD
grants were pledged by the state
for $13.7 million, while bonds
would have to make up for the remaining total of $42.8 million.
According to Mishler, the design phase is underway. When
completed, bids will be solicited.
Our architect is leading the
current phase under the watchful
eye of our construction manager.
Once bids are awarded, the construction can begin, Mishler
said.

Treat to play video games best

thing ever, Justin Coffman says
TREAT
Continued from page 2
My New Years resolution is to
read more books, Deb said.
Sharon Coffman said with a
laugh that she would like to try to
leave her kids with a sitter. Coffman, a stay-at-home mother of
three, spends her time with her
children almost 24/7, leaving no
real time for her to relax.
It would be nice to get some
alone time, Coffman said.
In 2015, Coffman is looking for-

ward to the summer. She cant

wait to open the pool and spend
time there in the warm weather.
Her boys, Justin, 7, and Jeremy,
5, shared their favorite things to
happen in 2014. Justin said he
was excited that he is allowed to
play video games during the week
now.
First, we got to do it only
when we were good. Then we got
to do it on the weekends. Then
someone said we should get to
play three times on the weekdays,
and it is the best thing ever,
Justin said.
Jeremy spoke about a scooter

he received for Christmas at his

grandmothers house. There is a
black pedal and flames that
come out of the back, he said.
For their resolutions, Justin
said he wants to put together
Lego sets, apparently a million
Lego sets. Jeremy wants to jump
on the pogo stick, a feat that can
be hard for sure.
Everyone, from kids to adults,
was looking forward to and had
dreams for the New Year, both big
and small.
Hopefully, 2015 will bring those
wishful resolutions to reality for
all.

The bond referendum represents many projects, some of

them affecting all schools and
some affecting individual schools.
However, all require a good deal
of pre-planning beyond just the
design, Mishler said. Several projects will begin and be completed
during the summer of 2015.
Starts dates are uncertain as
of now, but we expect to complete
many of the projects during the
summer of 2015, Mishler said.
The goal is to minimize disruption, but, eventually, there will be
some. The goal is to coordinate in
such a way as to minimize that
disruption.
Also, in 2015, it is likely that the
BOE will begin a long-term
strategic planning process, according to Mishler. This should
create a need for community
input in various phases of the de-

velopment of the plan.

Big events for the schools include a multitude of art-filled performances in 2015. The MoorArts
Gala will be on Saturday, Jan. 24
from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the
Moorestown Community House.
The evening of performances and
fine arts is a fundraiser for
MoorArts that features select
vocal and instrumental entertainment, an exhibition and online
sale of exceptional art and wine
and craft beer, gourmet food and
dessert stations. Tickets are $85
before Jan. 15 and $100 after. For
more
information,
go
to
www.moorarts.org.
The Moorestown High School
Pops Vocal Concert will be Feb. 5
with a snow date of Feb. 6. The
Band Pops Concert will be March
12. Also at MHS, the spring musical is Monty Pythons Spamalot. Lovingly ripped off from
the classic film comedy Monty
Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot retells the legend of King
Arthur and his Knights of the

Round Table, and features a bevy

of beautiful show girls, not to
mention cows, killer rabbits and
French people. The 2005 Broadway production won three Tony
Awards, including "Best Musical," and received 14 Tony Award
nominations. The shows are to be
performed on Feb. 27 and 28 and
March 6 and 7. To learn more,
visit moorestownhstheater.weebly.com.
The William Allen Middle
School will also be performing a
musical, Willy Wonka Jr., based
on the original book Charlie and
the Chocolate Factory by Roald
Dahl. Performances will be Feb.
19 through 21.
For more information, visit the
William Allen Middle School website under the Athletics and Activities tab for the WAMS Theater
webpage.

This is a top priority for the
township. We will work diligently
with the professionals previously
mentioned and the NJDEP to
move forward as quickly as possible while making sure we dot
every I and cross every T. The
NJDEP has indicated that they
will provide funding for the capital costs of this investment,
Carew said.
There are many more projects
and events that citizens should be
aware of for Moorestown in 2015.
Completing the engineering for
the township parking lot on Second Street, commonly known as
the Peter Pan parking lot, is one
of those projects. According to
Carew, the goal is to include the
construction phase in the 2015
capital budget and go out to bid
by summer.
In addition, the township will
make final determination and
complete implementation of a
new metered parking system for
Main Street and the Peter Pan
parking lot.
The township is looking forward to completion of the scientific review of Strawbridge Lake
and the completion of the dam repairs in 2015. The township is also
looking to begin the third phase
of Strawbridge Lake improvements, which is the review, planning and implementation of
recreational improvements to
Strawbridge Lake Park.
Residents should look forward
to the creation and launch of the
townships new website. According to Carew, this will provide residents with a more interactive
and responsive experience in
communicating with the township. The township is also close to
choosing a new vendor for community development software
that will enhance the construction and zoning permit experience.
The year ahead may also see
the demolition of the old library
and a final determination of what
that property will become.

Completion of the Road Improvement Program analysis

Carew said. This will provide the

township with the information
necessary to remain proactive
and fiscally responsible in regard
to infrastructure improvements.
The continuation of a policy to
search for grant opportunities to
improve the towns infrastructure shall progress during the
year. This includes improvements
to roads, utility systems, parks,
streetscapes and bicycle pathways. Also for 2015, the investigation of the potential of utilizing
