Setting up a packaged drinking water plant will take 6 to 8 months time to be very practical.

First you need to identify a land to set up the water plant. At least >5,000- 8 000 sq ft of land
is required; more than 8,000 sq ft is advantageous.

Water is going to be your raw material. So before purchasing the land ensure it has enough
ground water source. If possible collect water from bore well from that place if not from a
nearby bore well in that locality and do a water test to check the TDS level. If the TDS level or
water source is unsatisfactory avoid that land.

You should then identify a vendor who can install the RO plant as a turnkey project.

Next you should approach your panchayat, or local governing body to get a no objection
certificate (NOC) to do water business in the area. Prefer a village where you can get the NOC
without much trouble. Then you have to take ground water Abstraction clearance from
Central Groundwater Board (CGWB)

Next get the building plan approval from the local authority. You may need a building of
3,000 to 4,000 sq ft constructed building.

You should approach EB department, you may require 3 phase electricity with at least 30HP
capacity. (It also depends on the plant capacity). You only need a temporary connection at the
time of construction of building; you may need the permanent connection for the plant
operation.

After getting NOC, building approval, EB connection, you need to identify your civil engineer.
You need to discuss with your RO plant vendor and engineer to discuss the plant layout.

The plant must comply to ISO standards so detailed discussion is required.

You may start making the bore well and at least 2 inch of water supply of pressure is required.

You can make the construction economical by avoiding RC ceiling and can opt for GI sheet
roofing and make a false ceiling.

The plant requires a biological lab and a chemical lab.

You will need to employ a microbiologist to operate the plant.

Construction time depends on your engineer, it can done within 4 to 5 months, the
installation of machine can be done in a month, and then apply for BIS clearance, which will
take 8 to 10 months as said in the beginning.

Now, coming to cost.

The cost of the plant depends on plant capacity, it is based on LPH (Liters per Hour), to start
with you may go 3000 LPH, or if your market potential is higher and you have good
networking then you may go for 5,000 or higher.

I would suggest you start with 3,000 LPH or 4,000 LPH and you can later expand your
capacity. The cost depends on other factors, configuring the entire plant, whether you are
using SS fabricated or FRP materials, FRP is little lower than SS tanks.

The price varies on what type membrane you are using and the kind of water pumps. If you
are using Grundfos pumps then the price can be little higher, and also depends on whether
you are going for manual or automatic filling, PET blowing, pouch making etc. So price cannot
be said without knowing the plant capacity, filling type etc.

Banks give loans for packaged drinking water business.
