Final Exam
CM3110
17 December 2014

Instructions:
i. Closed book, closed notes. One 8.5 by 11 study sheet allowed. All work on the exam must be
your own.
ii. Write your solution work on one side of the page only. Do not write on the
back of any pages.
iii. Please be neat. Only neat answers will be granted partial credit.
iv. Significant figures count.
v. Please box your final answers.
vi. If you use a calculator, please write your steps if you wish partial credit.
vii. No cell phones or internet-capable instruments allowed.

There are five problems on the test (see other side)

There is an additional handout of resources (12 pages).

1. (25 points) Water (temperature 25.0 ) flows through a horizontal pipe (inner diameter
1.3848 , length 254 ) in turbulent flow (Re=12,100). Calculate the following:
a. Average velocity in /
b. Fanning friction factor
c. Pressure drop in
2. (20 points) The steady energy flux through a flat aluminum plate (density 2.700 10
/ ,
heat capacity 0.902 / ) is 3.40 10 / . The plate is 0.010 thick. If the hotter
side of the plate is at a temperature of 34 , what is the temperature of the other side of the plate?
3. (20 points) Hot water enters the outside of a 2-4, counter-current, shell-and tube heat exchanger
(area for heat transfer 4.05 10
; overall heat transfer coefficient 28.00 10 /
;
operates adiabatically). The water enters at 91oC and exits at 45oC. A liquid food product flows
on the inside of the heat exchanger. The food product has the following physical properties at
room temperature: thermal conductivity 0.559 /
, density 1073 / , heat capacity
4.02 /
, viscosity 23.4 . For the purposes of this problem you may assume that the
physical properties of both streams are independent of temperature and equal to their values at
room temperature. The food product enters at 25oC and exits at 48oC. What is the mass flow rate
of the water through the heat exchanger?
4. (20 points) In a proposed new pilot plant you are building, a reactor feed (mass flow rate
0.23 / ; mean heat capacity 4.092 / ) must be brought up to temperature by passing
the feed stream through the inside of a counter-current double-pipe heat exchanger. At the inlet to
the heat exchanger, the feed stream is at room temperature (25oC). There is a heat exchanger in
and with an area of heat transfer
storage with an overall heat transfer coefficient of 2100 /
of 1.5 . A heat-exchange fluid Silthermex (maximum flow rate in this exchanger = 0.15 kg/s;
mean heat capacity 12.2 / ) is to be used as the fluid in the outside portion of the heat
exchanger. The inlet temperature of the Silthermex is 142oC. If the Silthermex is run at its
maximum flow rate, how much heat is transferred in the heat exchanger?
5. (15 points) A vertical plate (wrought iron, 4.0 cm thick) that is 20.0 cm wide and 10.0 cm tall
forms the outside wall of a small reactor. This outside wall is exposed to air at 34.6oC. The
outside wall temperature is measured to be 318.8oC at steady state. What is the heat transfer
coefficient at the outside surface?
