RESOLUTION NO.

2015 - _______
A resolution relating to the City of Spokane supporting Ballot Proposition No. ___
entitled _________, and No. _____ entitled _______ submitted by the Spokane
School District 81 for the February 10, 2015 special election regarding propositions for
school bond and levy.
WHEREAS , Spokane Public Schools adopted Resolution No. 2014-42 on
November 5, 2014, a copy of which is attached to this resolution. The resolution
provides for ballot propositions on the February 10, 2015 special election ballot which
will be asking the community for support on a bond and levy; and
WHEREAS, the Spokane Public Schools levy is a renewal and is not a new tax;
and
WHEREAS, the Spokane Public Schools levy help pays for elementary
counselors, librarians, textbooks, instructional materials, special education teachers,
support staff, and extra- curricular activities; and
WHEREAS, the Spokane Public Schools bond is a renewal and is not a new tax;
and
WHEREAS, public safety is the City of Spokanes number one priority; and
WHEREAS, the Spokane Public Schools bond will improve safety and security at
all schools including additional cameras, single points of entry, and fire alarm upgrades;
and
WHEREAS, the City of Spokane is committed to providing quality, safe, walkable
and bikeable infrastructure for students and staff to get to and from school; and
WHEREAS, Spokane Public Schools is committed to providing quality, safe,
durable, and well-designed learning environments for students and staff; and
WHEREAS, the Spokane Public Schools bond will add additional classrooms at
Lewis and Clark High School, and Wilson Elementary among other modernizations; and
WHEREAS, the Spokane Public Schools bond will provide classroom space for
enrollment growth and class size reductions; and
WHEREAS, the Spokane Public Schools bond will replace the Shaw Middle
School Gym, add a new cafeteria at North Central High School, replace Linwood
Elementary, modernize and add to Franklin Elementary and provide for Phase II of the
Salk Middle School replacement; and

WHEREAS, the City of Spokane strongly supports the continuation of STEM


(science, technology, engineering, math) education to prepare our youth for our regions
STEM-based innovative economy; and
WHEREAS, the Spokane Public Schools bond will improve technology at schools
and provide more student learning opportunities by improving wireless internet access
as well as upgrading student and staff computers and classroom technology; and
WHEREAS, the passage of the Spokane Public Schools Bond and Levy will
pump millions into our local economy, creating jobs and benefitting our local
businesses; and
WHEREAS, the City of Spokane Street Levy, Riverfront Park Master Plan
Implementation, Integrated Clean Water Plan, and passage of the Spokane Public
Schools bond and levy will mean the greatest economic investment in the history of the
City of Spokane; and
WHEREAS, voter approval of the Spokane Public Schools bond will add another
$25 million in a state funding match to be spent on students here in City of Spokane;
and
WHEREAS, the Spokane Public Schools bond and levy will benefit all schools
and all City Council districts throughout the City of Spokane; and
WHEREAS, the City of Spokane has a strong history of community investment in
our schools; and
WHEREAS, the City of Spokane remains committed to the proud tradition of
providing quality education for our children; -- Now, Therefore,
BE IT RESOLOVED that the City of Spokane and the Spokane City Council
strongly supports the passage of Proposition No. ____ regarding _________ and No.
_____ regarding _________ submitted by the Spokane Public Schools and encourages
voters to return their ballots by February 10, 2015.
