1. PURPOSE

T h i s m e t h o d s t a t e m e n t o u t l i n e s installation activities
for underground uPVC piping systems including excavation &
joining methods to ensure compliance with the projects
standards,
consultant
recommendations,
applicable
standards & legal requirements.
2. SCOPE
This method statement details handling, storage, delivery,
installation instructions to be followed during the
manufacturing of Underground uPVC p i p i n g for SCPX-1
Project.

3. SAFETY
The unsafe work practices and conditions in the work place
shall be immediately identified and eliminated through the
use of analytical techniques such as risk assessment.
Build a team safety mentality where each worker
contributes to the effort and each superintendent is fully
aware of the capabilities and limitations of their team.
All tools and equipments shall be used in accordance with
the manufacturers recommendations,required tool guards
in place, and maintained in good working order.
Where appropriate shall require employees to wear eye,
ear, head and face, foot protection outfit.
Special care shall be taken for the erection of scaffolding
and ladders at height.

4. EQUIPMENTS

All equipments shall be complying with the specifications,

standards & safety plan.
Grinders fitted with guards & plugged cable ends..
Hand tools (Wrenches Screws Hammers ..) of required
size as per application.
Lifting tools (Ratchets Chain blocks Hydraulic jacks - .) of
appropriate calibrated capacities.
5. PROCEDURES

5.1 Trenching

All project documents&drawings shall be verified and ensured

for construction approval prior to execution work.
Excavation work shall not commence until detailed pipeline
route pegging survey has been completed.
Trenches for sewer piping shall be excavated and maintained
as shown on the contract drawings.
Trench widths shall be held within the minimum and
maximum limits shown on the contract drawings
The depth of the trench should allow for the proper cover to
be added during the backfill process.

5.2 Bedding&Haunching

The floor of the trench must be made suitable for proper

installation.
Pipe should have a firm bedding no less than 4 inches deep, up
to 6 inches in cases where rock or other coarse material is
present.
Haunching is the most important layer of backfill that is put
into place. The haunching should be worked in and compacted

around the curvature of the bottom half of the pipe before

the rest of backfill is placed.
Material used in the haunching zone should be the same, or
very similar to material used in the bedding zone to maintain
side support of the envelope.

5.3 Concrete Manhole Installation

Use approved lifting devices that will safely lift the weight of
precast concrete manhole.
Use a minimum of 6 inches of approved bedding material.
Set the manhole base on a graded bedding per job
specifications making sure pipe openings match design
elevations.
Seal the space between pipe connections and manhole.

5.4 Joint Assembly

All pipe, fittings, and specials shall be carefully inspected in the

field before lowering into the trench.
Cracked, broken, warped, out-of-round, damaged joints, or
otherwise defective pipe, fittings or specials, as determined by
the ENGINEER, shall be culled out and not installed. Such
rejected pipe shall be clearly tagged in such manner as not
deface or damage it, and the pipe shall then removed from
the job site.
Pipe or fittings which becomes cracked, broken or otherwise
damaged during or after installation, shall be marked and
removed from the job site.
Remove any mud, sand, or other foreign material from the bell
interior and spigot exterior that could prevent an effective seal
between the bell and spigot.
Lubricate around pipe and gasket by a brush or roller.
Keep the pipe lengths in proper alignment and force to
complete to assembly.

Be careful not to let the lubricated section touch the dirt or

backfill asforeign material could adhere to the surface and
compromise joint integrity.

5.5 Testing

The line and/or manhole to be plugged prior to add water.

The total amount of water added during the test requirement
shall be measured and recorded with the head of water at the
required test pressure.
The test pressure is the pressure equivalent to or resulting
from filling the test section up to the ground level of the
downstream or upstream manhole,as appropirate, with a
maximum pressure of 50 kPa and a minumum pressure 10 kPa
measured at the top of the pipe.
The testing time shall be (30 1) min.
The test requirement is satisfied if the amount of water added
is not greater than:
- 0,15 l/m2 during 30 min for pipelines.
- 0,20 l/m2 during 30 min for pipelines including
manholes.
- 0,40 l/m2 during 30 min for manholes and
inspection chambers
(Note: m2 refers to the wetted internal surface.)

5.6 Initial & Final Backfilling

The initial backfill begins at the springline(The springline

height is half of the OD of the pipe) and extends to a
minimum of 6 inches above the top of the pipe.

It is very important not to use compaction equipment directly

over pipe while placing initial backfill.

The final backfill is important to keep a good level of

compaction to prevent rutting at the top of trench. The final
backfill extends from the initial backfill to the surface and
should be a minimum of 6 inches deep.

The excavated material from digging the trench may be used

for the final backfill stage, unless otherwise required.
