Task 3: Analysis of Magazine Cover

The Main Image- The main image is the image that is

masthead for this magazine is NME; it immediately stands out

as it has a white font in a red box. The masthead background
and a cover line is the only colour on the magazine, the rest is
black and white so it stands out very clearly. It is also very clear
as it is in a bold sans serif font. The masthead is in the corner of
the page which breaks away from codes and conventions as a
normal masthead is spread across the top of the page. It also
breaks away from codes and conventions as the masthead is
covering the main image and normally the main image cover
the masthead.

on the cover. On this magazine, it takes up the entire

cover. A medium close up shot has been used so you can
see the face and upper body. He is using direct address
as he is looking straight at the audience. He is also
wearing dark clothing so he blends in with the font and
layout as opposed to sticking out. However, despite this,
he is still the first thing you see. Also, he is holding an
object, in most magazines the model in the main image
doesnt hold anything, and in some cases you cant even
see their hands.

Layout- The layout is how the page is presented. The layout

Genre- A genre is a style of category of music or art. From the

cover, we can tell that the genre is a mixture between indie
and alternative rock. We know this because the artist on the
cover is a very famous singer in an alternative rock band Oasis.
FontsWe can also tell from the colour scheme, red, black and white,
that it is a rock magazine as those colours are usually
connoted with rock.

for the magazine cover is un-usual as there is no footer. Also,

almost all the cover lines have some sort of border around
them, which makes it look neat. However, this is breaking away
from codes and conventions as most cover lines do not have
borders around them on other magazines.

The main cover line- A main cover line is a short statement

about one of the main articles inside the magazine. It is usually
the second biggest text. The main cover line in this magazine is
in two separate parts, one in a black font in a white box and
one in a black box with a white font. This also breaks way from
codes and conventions as normally cover lines are in the same
colour and same box. The font is the same style as the
masthead, bold and san serif, which shows consistency.

Barcode, Price Dateline and

Issue Number- The barcode and
price are in the corner. This means they
are out of the way but still visible. The
issue number and dateline are also by
the barcode, so they are all together.

Target Audience/Niche Market- From the cover, we can

tell that the target audience will be people who enjoy
listening to alternative rock/indie music. The niche market
for this magazine would probably be males aged 16-25.
