Preface

India suffers from chronic power shortages, high energy costs, high electricity transmission
and distribution losses and inadequate use of natural resources for power generation. The
real challenge in power sector in India lies in how efficiently the transmission, distribution
and metering sector could be managed.
Using smart energy infrastructures in the form of both advanced metering and control
networks reduces energy demand and helps offset the pressure to increase generation
capacity while enabling demand management in real-time in response to grid conditions.
The steady growth of renewable energy technologies and cost-competitiveness of solar and
wind power call for a smarter approach to power-grid management. Decision makers from
business, industry and government are now seeking integrated energy solutions to ensure a
reliable and affordable power supply, and effective management of energy-related costs
which affect ROI.
The second edition of the Dialogue on Transmission & Distribution will address a
set of strategies to guide decision-makers in the transition to a smarter grid, along
with a comprehensive overview of the T&D, smart-grid technologies available for the
integration of renewable energy, including relatively high shares of variable sources
such as solar and wind energy. The dialogue will deliberate on T&D issues and
strategies, market drivers and funding scenario/ options, regulatory developments
and industry trends in Power Sector.
