Section C
( 15 marks)
( Time suggested: 25 minutes)
Questions 17-25 are based on the passage below.

Trees all around the world are being depleted at very fast rate. The quick destruction of the
forests of the world is affecting the biodiversity adversely. The widespread deforestation brings
forth with it many negative impacts on the environment.
When forest areas are cleared, the soils exposure to the sun makes it very dry and infertile.
Replanting trees will not solve the problem because the soil does not have the essential nutrients
for trees to grow healthily.
Trees affect the climate, and therefore our weather, in a few ways. They help to regulate the
air and keep it cool. This is done through a process called transpiration. During transpiration,
trees draw out water from the soil through their roots. It then evaporates through the leaves ,
releasing water into the atmosphere to keep the air cool. When trees are cut down, less water
vapour is released into the atmosphere, causing the temperature to rise.
Tropical rainforests are very important. Scientists estimate that more than half of all the
worlds plant and animal species live in tropical rain forests. Due to deforestation, alarming
numbers of plant and animal species are lost each day.
Deforestation also causes soil erosion. When there is no trees or plants on the ground , the
soil is directly exposed to both water and wind erosion. Soil is washed into rivers when it rains
because there is no vegetation to hold it back. The structure of the soil is also weakened, which
leads to disasters such as landslides.
How do we stop or control deforestation then? One solution is to carefully manage our
forest resources to make sure that they do not disappear. The cutting down of trees should be
balanced by planting enough young trees to replace the ones that have been cut down. With
commitment from everybody, we may still be able to prevent our forests from disappearing
forever from our planet.
