Problem Set for Midterm Exam

Some of the problems on the midterm (on Oct 14) will be similar to some
of the exercises given below. Make sure to understand the solutions and
the principles for solving these kind of problems. Feel free to come to
oce hours or to write an email should you need any assistance with the
problems.

Problem 1
Consider the following parametric equations for 1 1:
() = 2 32

() = 3 ;

Sketch the curve parametrized by the above equations; nd (if any) points
of horizontal and vertical tangency. Find the tangent slope(s) at the point
(1, 0). Find the area enclosed by the curve.
Problem 2
Consider the following parametric equations for 0 /2:
() = 2 ()

() = 2 ()

Sketch the curve parametrized by the above equations; nd (if any) points
of horizontal and vertical tangency. Find the tangent slope(s) at the point
(1/2, 1/2). Find the length of the path traced by the equations.
Problem 3
Sketch the polar curve given by the polar equation
() = 1 + 2()
nd (if any) points of horizontal and vertical tangency. Find the tangent
slope(s) at the pole. Write formulae for the length of the inner loop and
the area between the inner and the outer loop (there is no need to compute
the integral).

Problem 4
Consider the two polar curves
1 () = 2()

2 () = 1

Find polar coordinates of all points of intersection of the two curves; nd

tangent slopes at these points. Consider the region inside the curve parametrized
by 1 and outside the curve parametrized by 2 . Compute the length of the
boundary of this region and write a formula for its area (no need to compute the integral)
Problem 5
Consider the polar curve
() = (3)
Sketch the curve, nd tangent slope(s) at the pole and coordinates of points
where the tangent slope is horizontal. Compute the area of one lobe of
the curve.
Problem 6 (Tricky)
Find all points of intersection of the curve dened in the previous problem
and the circle of radius 1 centered at the pole. Find all points of intersection of the same curve with the circle of radius 1/2 centered at the pole.
Compute the area between the two circles and outside of the lobes of the
curve.
Problem 7
Let = 1, 3, 0 and be the vector connecting the point (1, 1, 1) and
(1, 0, 0). Prove that they are neither parallel nor orthogonal. Compute
comp and comp
Problem 8
Let (1, 2, 1), (3, 0, 0), (1, 3, 0)) and (1, 0, 2) be four points in the
three-dimensional space. Compute the volume of the parallelepiped which
has , , and among its (eight) vertices.
Problem 9
Write inequalities which describe the region of space which is simultaneously inside the sphere of radius 1 centered at (2, 3, 4) and the sphere of
radius 2 centered at (2, 2, 3)
