PART B (516 = 80 marks)

11(a). Derive the flexibility matrix of a continuous beam shown in Fig.
11(a) with all the supports at the same level using the general approach
stating the underlying assumptions. Determine the forces in the members of
the continuous beam if L1 = 2.5 m, L2 = 5 m, L3 = 4 m, a concentrated load
of 25 kN acts at midspan of AB, UDL of 75 kN/m acts across span BC and a
point load of 50 kN acts at midspan of CD. EI is constant throughout.

Or
11(b). Use the flexibility method to determine the reactions at hinged support
C of an L bent shown in Fig. 11(b).

12(a). Determine the forces in the members of a two-span continuous beam

shown in Fig. 12(a) if the support at the middle settles by 2 mm using the
stiffness matrix method. Take E = 200 kN/mm2 and I = 5.80 10-6 m4 for
both spans.

Or

12(b). Construct the structure stiffness matrix for the truss shown in Fig.
12(b). AE is constant.

13(a) Write short notes on

Or

13(b). Derive the stiffness matrix for a CST element from the fundamental
principle.
14(a) Determine the plastic modulus and shape factor for an unsymmetrical I
section

shown in Fig. 14(a).

Or
14(b) Determine the value of W at collapse of a three-span continuous beam
shown in Fig. 14(b). The plastic moment capacity MP of the beam is constant
for all spans.

15(a). Find the forces in the space truss shown in Fig. 15(a) using the method of
tension coefficient. Joint A is supported on rollers, joint B by ball-and-socket
and joint C by slotted roller contained in a cylinder.

Or
15(b). A three hinged stiffening girder of a suspension bridge of 200 m span
subjected to two point loads 50 kN each placed at 15 m and 50 m, respectively,
from the left hand hinge. Determine the bending moment and shear force in the
girder at section 40 m from each end. Also determine the maximum tension in
the cable which has a central dip of 15 m.
