(Gem glows) During the first term of Marcos and the second senatorial election, most of the Nationalista Party candidate won except for one, Senator Benigno Aquino from the Liberal Party. On Aquinos first privilege speech, he denounced the militarism in Marcos government. Also on the same year, another scandal broke which is with Dovie Beams having an affair with President Marcos. Scandals still fresh from peoples mind, Marcos ran for the second time as president during the 1969 elections. It was one of the dirtiest, fraudulent, and the most expensive elections in Philippine history. Loss of public confidence was even more pronounced during the 1971 elections after the Plaza Miranda Bombing. According to Amnesty International Report 70,000 were detained 32,000 were tortured (including women raped by officers) 3,240 were killed during martial law (exit to map) After conversation mission 3 (Gem glows) Imelda Romualdez Marcos was called the Iron Butterfly during martial law and tried to prove her worth after the Dovie Beams Affair. She became the governor of Manila and Minister of Human Settlement. She was not just the First Lady, She was the Other President. She was famed for spending public funds on shopping and parties. Critics said she had edifice complex because she put up all sorts of buildings like Folk Arts Theatre and Cultural Centre(Cultural Centre of the Philippines today), Philippine International Convention Centre, Heart Centre, Lung Centre, Kidney Centre and Film Centre. Cronies got exclusive rights on government projects, haciendas, monopoly on
