I have already provided the link to the detailed discussion of today's pasuram
by various commentators in an earlier post made just a little while ago (see

In today's pasuram (see English transliteration of the text below) Andal is


singing the glories of the Lord and describing His birth (piRandhu) as the child
of one (oruththi maganaay piRandhu) and growing up as the child of another
(again oruththi maganaay oLiththu vaLara). He was born from the womb of
Devaki at night and on that same night (or iravil) was taken to the bed of
Yashoda who raised Him. He was hiding as He grew up (oLiththu vaLara) in
Gokula after being born in Mathura.
It is so very soothing just to recall this and read about it and imagine this in
your mind's eye and hence this brief write up now, although the writings of
the scholars and the outpourings of the acaryas have already been called
attention to.

Was He really hiding? Anda says no. That was only to please Devaki. Even
while He was growing up and hiding He struck fear in Kamsa's heart. This is
how we write in English but the Tamil idiom used by Andal is different. A fire

was raging in the evil Kamsa's belly says Andal (kanjan vayaRRil neruppEnna
ninDRa NedumaalE), the one who bore a grudge and plotted in many ways to
kill baby Krishna. But, Kamsa's whole thinking and thoughts were rendered
useless by the fear and the fire consuming within his stomach.
After describing Him thus, Andal says, "We come to you. We come and beg you
and beseech you (aruththithu vandhom). Please bestow upon us the boon of
liberation (moksha). Aren't we deserving (paRai tharudhi yaagil)?
In Sanskrit, the equivalent verb is "arhasi, for second person, and arhati for
the thrid person), repeatedly used by Krishna in chapter 2 of the Gita. The
Tamil argadhai, which means to be deserving of something, is derived from
the same and so is tharudhi yaagil. Andal says we are deserving since we are
Your devotees and have performed our religious vows dutifully and devotedly
without any faults. But more than that, Your compassion for Your devotees
should be enough since we have come to You and are begging You. If Maharaja
Bali can agree to Your wish, when You went to him and begged, You too can
agree to our wish, when we have come to beg. You wanted land that can be
covered with THREE strides. But, we only want ONE thing - paRai tharudhi
yaagil - give us the liberation from this world of nonconstancy (anityam) and
non-joys (asukham), Gita, chapter 9, verse 33. There Krishna says, having
attained this anitya and asukha world, come to Me and worship Me.
Andal is doing exactly the same thing and she boldly demands that He bestow
upon us all the boon of liberation. We are surrendered. We are devoted. We
have worshipped. What more do you want from us?
1. Bestow upon the grace that comes Mahalakshmi (beauty, wealth, riches,
devotion, all that is auspicious or Shreyas, deriving from Shree) and
matches it.
2. Bestow upon us the boon of being of service (thiruththakka selvamum
sevagamum yaam paaDi).
3. Liberate us from all of our sorrows (varuththamum theerndhu).
4. Make us rejoice and be happy (magizhndhElor embaavaai).

Actually, Andal too has asked for three boons and more, after making the boon
of liberation her first boon.
Thiruththakka selvamum sevagamum can also be taken as, Correct us for any
faults that might have and still bestow upon the boons of wealth and
prosperity, and service to You, matching only that of Mahalakshmi.

Oruththi magan ... there is only One magan (son) and there is only one
Oruththi (that one female, referring to the mother) but Krishna made two
mothers for Himself.
And some of us lucky ones also are blessed to have two mothers in our lives.
Do you know anyone? Yes, there are actually many of us like Krishna with
more than one mother!
Hari Bol! Govinda Govindaa!! Om Namo NaaraayaNaaya !!!
