Dear Christian Friends:

Greetings from the great land of Africa! In

the midst of

this "dark continent" we have a

challenge and opportunity which makes us filled

with thanksgiving. Thanksgiving for the message
which has been given to us to carry, and for you
who make It possible for us to carry it among
the African people. We think of you as you

beginning of the ceIebration. in thought we wlI I take part In the

remembrance of this great occasion. We also have another source of
thanksgiving, to report in this letter, and we want you to be thankful
with us in your thoughts and prayers. Unless you know of the work
here you will not be able to share with us in thanksgiving to God. We
ask that you also consider the problems that we all have and thank God
that upon our request He will provide strength for the day.
RESPONSE TO THE GOSPEL

One-hundred ^d fifteen Africans confessed Christ as the Son of

God dur^lng rne month of October. Many more are wa iTtrrg for the mes
sage to come to them and we, pray that they will be willing to accept
Christ as their Saviour.
these alone.

Evangelist AAlgar has reported over 100 of

He has been filled with enthusiasm because America has

"finally sent his people a missionary." He is now living on the^

Urungwe Reserve. The Dodge served to move his family and belongings,
including goafs, dogs, and chickens.
The Umvuma Church of Christ has dropped from about 50 to 8 and

10 in the last 6 months due to disagreement among the leaders. The

power of the Gospel has entered into the leaders again and now, with
the guidance of the Holy Spirit they wiI I work together. As we talk

ed together they felt sure that the members would start coming back
to be found faithful once again.
On October 29 our garden boy along with two others who have been

studying with us of the evenings whenever possible, were baptized at

a church meeting in Selukwe.
.

ANOTHER AREA TO BE SURVEYED

Dr. Pruett returned from a medical survey with the Information

that an area north of Gokwe has no schools or religious work for 120
miles. Others have entered, but were unable to stay, caused mainly
by themselves. The people are not to advanced, but they want help.
The tsetse fly is a hazard to the area and one must be careful to

watch for the symtoms and be treated. Since It is the area closest
to us, it seems only logical that we try to develope it. Several

factors are yet to be considered before we promise to do anything in

the area.

Dr Pruett and I will seek out mo; e Information In a survey

which has been planned fot

the

loiter part of November.

MISSION SITE TO BE CHOSEN

The original site is not suitable for all we must build. The Na
tive Department has given us freedom t75 choose~anotheri^ This very
night we are packing for a 6 day camping trip to set the final boundry
of the site.

Conditional on building a clinic, they have also agreed

to g ive anyihing possible including a $1000.00 bore-hole. (Wonderful,

but we got a bill today for Customs and Shipping from the cape-$750.00)
But we are very thankful for the bore-hole as it is a'big help to us.
"A LONG TAIL"

Our only tale to tell about the wild life of this country is about
the python which my interpreter and I stoned to death. It measured
seven feet and four inches long. It was a baby. They get thirty feet.
We have seen many other vyild game including the hippos, zebra and etc.
VISIT TO AAASHOKO MISSION

AS you know, we spent our first month at Mashoko. Five years ago
it was the only mission that the American Churches .of Christ were sup
porting in Southern Rhodesia. It is now only one of six. We stayed^
in the home of the Pemberton's and visited around the mission. 1 visit

ed the seminary classes held by Mr. Pemberton and Helen went to some
ladies meetings out in the villages with Mrs. Pemberton. We were
both privileged to make rounds with Dr. Pruett and his excellent staff.
It would thrill us to walk into The rooms and watch the joy expressed

by the patients.

I watched several major and minor operations and^

marveled at the skillful hands of the Doctor.

I went school visiting

with Barry Kennedy who has done an outstanding job in the educational
developement which leads the children to the understanding Christ as
the Son of God.

The teacher training, handled by Lester Cooper and

Faye Lewis will supply Christian teachers for the village schools. We
enjoyed the fellowship of all the missionary personnel.

As I bring thisTetter to a close. Jack Pennington stands in the

same room with me.

site.

I have asked him to go to help select the mission

The Pennington's have been a great help to us.^ How thaokfi.'] we

are for all our Christian brethren both here and you in America. We

thank God daily for you and ask God's peace and great grace to rest
upon you.
We thank you for all
k/odnesses, and we remain....

Many of you have sent gifts of joy to us, and they have certainly been
of a great help and cause of rejoicing for us. May God bless you In
this season, and may he give us greater vision for the coming year.
MISSION SITE DEVELQPEMENTS

A mission grant of twenty-two acres has been chosen by myself and

Jack Pennington of Bulawayo, whom 1 had asked to help.
It was chosen
in view of expansion to a one-hundred acre site. Before the next

newsletter in January of 1962, we expect the.grant to be given. We

are anxious for this grant, as we will then build our home there on
the Urungwe Reserve.
SIXTY-FOUR RESPOND TO GOSPEL
DURING NOVEMBER!

Migar Chikanda baptized 54 people including adults and young

people in November and then on November 19th we visited^the church at

Mugwagwa's Kraal and ten stepped forward to confess Christ, and then
were baptized that day by my former interpreter. He is now gone to
the Salisbury area to work. There were 37 members and every one had
originally been Dutch Reform members, and had been accepted into the

church of Christ by open membership several years ago by an untrained

evangelist. For five andone-half hours we met and discussed this
problem and even though the African Is slow to understand, they saw

the problem and were wi I I i ng "t'o s t-udy the matter.

Scriptures were

given for study and the example of the ten immersions that very dy
will be a big assest in the cuovcroron of this whole church. We covet

your prayers as we work with this group of people, that the Holy Spirit
will be convicting them of the truth and r rgliteousness to come.
