PRODUCT: PSI ABRASIVE CUT-OFF WHEELS
PSI Abrasive Cut-Off Wheels, manufactured by Allison Abrasives, are used to section ferrous and non-ferrous metals and non-metallics. Abrasive
Cut-Off Wheels function by "cutting" material with abrasive particles bonded in a resin rubber or rubber matrix. Abrasive Cut-Off Wheels are
designed to wear away, exposing new, sharp, abrasive particles. PSI Abrasive Cut-Off Wheels are a carefully formulated combination of particle
type, particle size, and wheel hardness to prevent burn and distortion, yet provide maximum useful life. PSI Abrasive Wheels with aluminum oxide
(Al2O3) as the cutting abrasive are generally used for the cutting of steel, most other metals, and alloys. PSI Abrasive Wheels with silicon carbide
(SiC) as the cutting abrasive are used for cutting glass, some ceramics, other non-metallic materials and some exotic alloys.

PRODUCT: PSI DIAMOND CUT-OFF BLADES
PSI Diamond Cut-Off Blades are used for cutting very hard, non-ferrous materials such as rocks, ceramics, carbides and semi-conductors. PSI
Diamond Blades are normally available in two basic specifications - Resin Bonded (RB) with a high diamond concentration (HC) for routine use and
Metal Bonded (MB) with low diamond concentration (LC). Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) blades, available in two specifications, are very effective on
most ferrous materials, including iron and nickel based super alloys. The standard CBN blades are free cutting while the long life blades cut more
slowly but last significantly longer. These second blades are excellent in work with radioactive materials where life of the blade is very important.
Both Diamond Blades and CBN Blades are manufactured to PSI specification to assure product quality and performance.

pressure and high temperature to mount the specimen in a convenient form. Phenolic Powders are the most popular and economical
materials to use. Phenolic Preforms are a convenient form for increased speed and production. Other mounting powders are used for
specialized applications.

OPERATION: GRINDING
PRODUCT: PSI ABRASIVE BELTS
PSI Abrasive Belts are generally used after sample sectioning to remove scale or burrs. PSI Abrasive Belts, manufactured by 3M, are
carefully specified to meet the unique requirements of the Materials Laboratory. Constructed of X weight cloth, a heavy backing material,
PSI Abrasive Belts can be used wet or dry (W/D). These belts have a special butt splice, reinforced with a strong plastic film to prevent
specimen "bump where the ends meet. Silicon carbide abrasive (SiC), the most popular in the met lab, is a shiny, black, sharp, very hard
mineral used for a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Aluminum oxide abrasive (Al2O3) is a brown colored mineral that is tough
and durable and is the most widely used abrasive grain. Zirconia-alumina abrasive (ZrAl) is an alloy mineral of aluminum and zirconium
oxide that is very effective for coarse grade stock removal. For the elimination of all possible silicon and aluminum contamination, PSI
Diamond Spot Belts are recommended.

PRODUCT: PSI MICROFINISHING FILM ABRASIVES
PSI Microfinishing Film, manufactured by 3M, is a micron graded precision thickness polyester film electrostatically coated with either aluminum oxide or
silicon carbide particles. The electrostatic coating process and proprietary resin bonding system results in a very aggressive product which performs a very
efficient grinding action. The precision thickness of the polyester film results in a very flat specimen when used on flat substrates. Because of the hardness of
the polyester backing the abrasive particles cannot recede into the backing, as occurs with paper or cloth backings with traditional abrasives. MF is effective
in the laboratory on a full range of materials normally prepared with paper or cloth backed silicon carbide (SiC) products. Because MF is inherently water
proof, the aluminum oxide product enables the Material Scientist to use the more efficient Al2O3 product on ferrous materials all the way to the polishing step.

PRODUCT: PSI DIAMOND MICROFINISHING FILM DISCS
Diamond Microfinishing Film Abrasives are a new tool available from PSI to the Materials Scientist. DMFFA Products, manufactured by the
3M Company, can replace traditional abrasive papers commonly used in the Metallurgical Laboratory. The unique features of this wet or
dry product enable the user to achieve the basic requirements of finish and flatness on a wide range of material samples. With DMFFA,
these goals will be reached with greater speed, reliability and more consistent results. Excellent finish is achieved by the precision grading
system used to select the diamond abrasive particles for each grade. Classified by the more accurate micron grading system, particle size
grading is held to much tighter tolerances than conventional abrasive products, which results in a higher density of the specified particle
size available to do the grinding required. This controlled uniformity of particle size, combined with electrostatic coating of the polyester film
backing, provides an unexcelled grinding product. Product flatness is achieved and maintained through the grinding steps by the
consistent 5 mil caliper of the dense, polyester backing. Unlike the traditional paper products, the abrasive particles cannot "recede" into
the backing. This feature results in shorter grind times and longer life because the abrasive particles remain at the "cutting" interface.
Shorter grind time means less heat generation in the material being ground. Longer life means improved economics.

PSI MAGNETIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

The PSI Magnetic Management System is used in the Metallographic and Petrographic Labs in applications where a number of grinding and
polishing steps are required for each sample. PSI offers the Magnetic Management System in 8", 10" and 12" diameters. Whether you are
grinding and polishing by hand or utilizing a semi-automatic grinder/polisher, the Magnetic Management System will save time changing to the next
step of the application and promote the maximum life of the consumable. The PSI Magnetic Management System is composed of two parts: 1) a
magnetic disc with Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) Back and 2) a stainless steel disc. The magnetic disc is made of a durable and flexible
0.030" thick magnetic material with a pull force of 75 pounds per square foot and will adhere to any original equipment manufacturers platen by use
of a strong PSA backing. The stainless steel disc is made of 400 series stainless steel to resist corrosion and warping. The stainless steel disc
becomes the platen for consumables and is applied to and held by the magnetic disc. Please contact PSI to discuss the Magnetic Management

PSI Diamond Discs consist of a layer of carefully graded diamonds securely bonded to a 1/16" flat plate. Metal Bond Diamond Discs
employ an electroplated nickel bond to a flat brass backing. More aggressive than the resin bonded type, Metal Bond Diamond Discs

PRODUCT: PSI DIAMOND LAPPING FILM DISCS
PSI Diamond Lapping Film, manufactured by 3M, is a micron graded, precision thickness polyester film, slurry coated with diamond
particles. This unique product enables the Materials Scientist to polish the most difficult hard and mixed hardness materials quickly, without
particle pull-out and with flatness determined by the flatness of the substrate. PSI Diamond Lapping Film Type A is a single layer of the
specified grade diamond particles resin bonded to the film backing. Type A is excellent for polishing applications where very little material
removal is required. It will have a shorter life than the other two types, but it gives a better finish grade for grade. Current applications
include TEM sample preparation, printed circuit board failure analysis and aerospace composite materials. PSI Diamond Lapping Film
Type B consist of diamond particles encapsulated in small soft ceramic beads, which are then resin coated to the polyester film backing.
This results in a longer lasting more aggressive product than the Type A product. As the ceramic beads wear, fresh diamond particles are

Type A and Type B. Type P consist of diamond particles directly bonded to the polyester film with a very hard resin. This results in a
product which works aggressively due to the large particle size, but because of the harder resin, exhibits a long life. Diamond Lapping Film
Type P is used for fine grinding and flattening prior to use of the other products. To facilitate trials of this product, call PSI to discuss your

PSI Lapping Film, manufactured by 3M, is a micron graded precision polyester film coated with either Al 2O3 or SiC particles. The slurry coating process and
resin bonding system used by 3M results in a mildly aggressive product which performs a polishing action on metallurgical samples. PSI Lapping Film
performs best when used on soft to medium soft (Rc20-40) ferrous and non-ferrous materials where sample constituents do not vary in hardness
dramatically. The precision film backing insures excellent flatness and edge retention on already flat specimens.

PRODUCT: PSI POLISHING PAPERS
PSI Polishing Paper, manufactured by the 3M Company is a special applications product. This wet or dry use material is a resin bonded
construction, coated on a 7 mil thick non-woven synthetic backing. The materials are closely classified and specified by the more accurate
micron grading system. Polishing Paper performs well on softer materials of mixed hardness.
