Euroword Help File

Welcome to Euroword
In the times of global economy communication problems between people using different languages
is more present than ever.
Although English language is almost generally accepted as an international language, learning
English alone is rarely enough.
There will be a constant need for some kind of translation.
And when we come to a dictionary, we must say that printed dictionaries are a history in era of
computers and Internet.
Euroword stands out from other dictionaries because it introduces three major world languages
(English-German-French) and Serbo-Croatian. And it translates simultaneously to other three in all
four directions..
Almost all software dictionaries that we saw today suffer from one or more severe limitations.
Their database is not consistent or full of errors and incorrect translations, and editing capabilities
are either not present or too cumbersome to use.
Some products have great editing features, but initial word database is too small, all portability of
the newly created entries to other computers is a problem.
Database is acceptable, but software has been made in such manner as to expect to be alone on
full screen to be useful. And problem with this is that we rarely use dictionary alone but use it as a
quick help when working on something else. We need just a quick glance on it obtaining results
as quickly as possible and than returning quickly to the previous work not disrupting line of
thought.

What Euroword has to offer?

With all this in mind I tried to make a difference.
I developed dictionary that is designed to be
REALLY YOUR'S PERSONAL PORTABLE UNIVERSAL DICTIONARY
Clever graphical interface.
Much work has been done to make clever and unique interface that secures that Euroword takes
as little resources (screen and machine power) as possible.
Easy to get results.
There is no simpler way to get translation of a word than to type it in.
And the Euroword tries very hard not to ask you to do anything more.
On the fly interactive translation secures finding definitions and translations without any
unnecessary click.
Rich word database.
We have no illusions whatsoever that our database is a complete one. But we have tried very hard
in several years time to collect as much word definitions and translations from a respectable
sources as we could. And the fact that definitions in native language exist for more than a half of
word entries is a remarkable result. Definitions are great because you often get correct translation
2007 ... Stonisa Software

Welcome to Euroword

to a language that you know but you still not know the exact definition of the translated words. And
the best way to practice foreign language is by reading of definition in that language.
Clever user interface.
Although Windows has some great features that boost computer usability for common users we
think that every good software should be fully manageable without a mouse too. Clever keyboard
shortcuts enable you to access all Euroword features with no mouse in such a manner not to
disrupt your regular course of thought.
SQL database.
There is no better place to store large amount of data than to a system that has been made for the
sole purpose to accommodate them. SQL storage of words secures data consistency offering
speed and power in network environment. And SQL database choice (Firebird SQL) ensures
maximum of performance not spending any additional money for expensive licenses.
Portability.
When you install Euroword on your hard-disk you can copy all files in the installation folder to the
USB Flash Memory (300MB or more) and you can start your copy of Euroword from any other
computer without installation. And all your words and translations will be always with you, wherever
you go.
Complete instructions are available in this section.
And when you try Euroword I believe that you will see that all of my efforts were justified.

Instalation
Euroword is distributed in a single executable file, named Euroword-<version number>.exe

Installation procedure is quite ordinary, it will unpack all necessary files to a specified folder
(defaults to <Program Files>/Stonisa/Euroword).
After installation you can copy your Euroword installation to any other computer or removable media
and your Euroword installation will work.
The reason for existing of this setup executable is only because of the size:
- Setup executable is ultra compressed and its size totals cca. 26 MB.
- Ready to run Euroword takes cca. 300 MB of storage, if compressed it would take cca. 100 MB.
2007 ... Stonisa Software

Euroword Help File

This difference means little for today's hard disks but it means a lot when we speak about Internet
downloads.
How is this extra compression achieved?
In executable you get only empty word database and the word definitions and translations in a quite
simplistic form (simple textual files, no index, no database).
After unpacking these data need to be inserted into word database, and this process will take cca.
15 minutes of computing time. After that your word database (file WORD.FDB in the same folder as
your executable file) is ready to run.
If you are confused by this too much explanations, just follow the following instructions.

During the file copy process you may be presented with this question.
You will see this question at the end of file copy process only if you are installing Euroword in the
folder when previous installation was found.
Question is simple, if you want to keep your old word database, choose No, if you want to reinstall
word database from a distribution file, then choose Yes.
At the end of the installation procedure, you will be presented with the following screen.

2007 ... Stonisa Software

Instalation

Unselect languages you do not want in your dictionary (you will save disk space, but you will have
no word entries for those languages) and then click Create NOW!
If the Create NOW! button is not enabled, then look for the reason in the Distribution files state
(corrupt distribution package), and Database state (database not empty).
If you close this window without starting procedure than your database will be empty, although
Euroword will function.
Process is fully automated and last long (15-30 minutes, depending on your computer speed).
Important note: close to the end of the procedure, your computer may confuse you with the Not
Responding message.
There is no need to react, installation procedure is indexing database, and uses no time to respond
to the Windows, in order to complete the process as soon as possible. Just wait, do not kill the
process or terminate application before it finishes and closes by itself.
Executable to run the software is represented by the icon

Registration
Euroword is not free software, although you can use it without paying any license.
Euroword is annoyware.
Until registered, it will continue to annoy you on every startup with a nag screen, you have to wait
for some time (5 to 60 seconds, at random) and that click on the correct number to be allowed to

2007 ... Stonisa Software

Euroword Help File

enter.

After counter reaches zero, press correct button and you will enter the program.

If you miss the right button (2) Euroword will close.

When you decide that time has come to buy the software, pay the license fee (very affordable)
using some of the supported paying modes.
When you register this software you will get user code and password that you will use to register
one or more copies of the product.

2007 ... Stonisa Software

Registration

Keep user code and password secret, because anyone that has the knowledge of them can use
them to register Euroword on any other computer using your codes (codes are limited).
Registered codes are memorized in the file euroword.conf that is located in the same folder as
Euroword executable.
If Euroword is used from the USB flash memory stick, registration on any of computers is saved that
stick, so once registered on one computer stays registered.

User's Manual
Dictionary is all about information.
The way of presenting these information to the user is a what makes a difference.
Euroword can work in either of two forms.
One is mini (minimalistic) and the other is maxi (or rather normal) form.
Both forms have their advantages, but none is definitely better than the other.

To get used to Euroword and to grasp all of its potential and to start understanding this great
product,
right click on the surface of the Mini Euroword and search through its menu.

4.1

Settings
There are not many things to customize with Euroword.
You can change colors for any of the relevant layers of the user interface, you can change default
input keyboard input language, set up using of cyrilic or latin alphabet for Serbian language, and
choose what interface (mini or maxi) Euroword should show initially next time you run it.

2007 ... Stonisa Software

Euroword Help File

To change colors click on the layer on the image, and choose a color from a dialog that shows up.
You can set up only background colors, so choose carefully.
When you enter words in Euroword in different languages, you don't have to switch to a proper
keyboard layout on operating system level. You just set up what keyboard layout you ordinary use,
and Euroword will translate all letters from this regular keyboard layout to the layout that is used for
a language in which the word is typed.
No keyboard switching necessary.

4.2

Mini - form
It is designed to be as small as possible, and it resize dynamically according to the data that it has
to present.

2007 ... Stonisa Software

User's Manual

You can see six different regions on this picture.

Explanation for every one starting from the top is given below.
1. Caption bar.
This caption bar is where word you type or select is printed. If the caption bar text is bold than it
denotes that word exist in database and translation and explanation is given to it. If text is not bold
than it is not existing word. As you type words caption bar text changes. Caption bar is also used to
move Euroword form to another place on the desktop using drag-and-drop procedure. Click and
hold left mouse button on the caption bar than move to desired place, and release the button to
drop.
2. Results group.
When caption bar text (word you entered) has some adequate entries in a database than this panel
emerges containing all words from the selected language that are appropriate. This happens on the
fly, without user having to issue any special command. You just type in a desired word and
everything works automatically. Use cursor "Up" and "Down" keys to change selected word if
many.
3-5 Translation group(s)
These panels contains translation entries for word selected in selection group. The word entries
are shown in red or blue color. Red is color to denote entries that have explanation in its definition.
Word is followed with a type and notes that are shown with one unit smaller font. They can be gray
or black. Black is color reserved for entries that have group glyph same as for the selected word
from the selection group. This way duplicating of glyph is avoided.
6. Explanation field.
Every item in dictionary database can have explanation associated with it. This explanation is not
limited in length, and if not possible to shown it turns to scrollable field, allowing you to read it whole
using vertical scrollbars.

4.2.1

Euroword Help File

Translation
Euroword does on-the-fly translation of words from one language to other three simultaneously.
There is no simpler way to enter the word you want translated than to simply type it.
We will demonstrate this in a simple procedure to translate the word work as noun in English.
This is step by step procedure to guide you in this simple process.

Step 1
Set input language
If you are not already set on English language you must switch to English (choose from right-click
pop-up menu or simply press ALT+E
(Alt+E for English, ALT+F, ALT+Y, ALT+G are for French, Serbian and German, respectively).

Step 2
Clear the input text
You will see translation for last translated word in that language.
To clear press ESC (escape, key in the top left corner of your keyboard).

Step 3
Type the word
Type W. There is no need to care about letter case because translation is case insensitive.
Translations for W is what we get.

Type O. We advance toward the goal.

Type R. Now there is no existing translation, nor explanation of word.

2007 ... Stonisa Software

User's Manual

10

So wor is shown exactly as you entered it.

Type K. We entered the whole word. And we got translation.

Step 4
Navigate results
Use Up and Down (cursor keys) to navigate through the result group.
We wanted to get word noun so we have to use Up and Down to navigate group.

Numbers
And one additional feature, you can get textual representation for numbers in range (1-999,999,999)
in all four languages .

(these are not contained as entries in database but calculated on demand).

4.2.2

Euroword Help File

Browsing
Euroword is easy to navigate through.
You have learned how to get translation earlier.
And you sow how to use Up and Down to navigate in the words group.
Let's move further with navigation.
Word navigation - Translation and Reverse
This is where we stopped in the previous step. To move between different translation words we use
Ctrl+Up and Ctrl+Down.
There is no need to choose translation language, everything is automated and selection wraps up
all the languages in translation group.

To get reverse translation of any word press Ctrl+R (with translation word selected).
Language switches to proper language and translation of the selected word is shown in a second.

You have seen previously how to switch between languages (ALT+E for English, ALT+F for French,
ALT+Y for Serbian, ALT+G for German language).

4.2.3

Editing
Euroword has fully open editable database.

2007 ... Stonisa Software

User's Manual

12

You can add new, delete existing entries, remove translation(s), enter or change explanations and
everything you wish with your word data base.
So, Euroword's word base is not really mine but yours.
And starting database is created using Euroword itself.
Word dialog
All editing actions are performed using the same dialog, looking exactly as on the picture below.

For Note you can enter additional special characters according to tables.
There is no need to switch between keyboard layouts when entering words in particular language
Euroword supports.
Keyboard entry is translated on the fly to look exactly as default Windows keyboard layout in
particular language.
If you need to enter special char, or character that doesn't exist or you don't know how to get it in
particular language keyboard layout, then you can use two additional tools:
Insert key.
Press Ins whenever your character input is expected and you will be offered to enter word in current

Windows keyboard layout

(without translation to particular Euroword language)

13

Euroword Help File

ALT+S.

To enter special char You may press ALT+S whenever your character keyboard input is expected.
Just click on the special char button and this char replaces current selection of appends to text if
nothing is selected.

Euroword will not allow you to enter two entries with the same Word, Type and Note field.
Euroword will not allow you to enter two entries with the same Word, Type field and Note field for
one entry empty and for another containing [g] (grammatical connotation).
In the case something like that has been tried, after OK you will be shown another word definition
dialog that is basically the same as one above and that shows you necessary corrections in your
definition and has some fields disabled.
Here are the keyboard shortcuts for changing words in Euroword:
Alt+Ins
Alt+Del
Alt+Enter
Ctrl+Y
Ctrl+E
Ctrl+G
Ctrl+F
Ctrl+Del
Ctrl+Enter
Shift+Ctrl+Del

Add new word

Delete the selected word
Change the selected word definition
New Serbian translation word
New English translation word
New German translation word
New French translation word
Remove selected translation from the list
Change selected translation word definition
Delete selected translation word from the dictionary

Another useful option for managing word database in Euroword is Maybe translations.
To invoke it press CTRL+M whenever you have entered valid word in Euroword.

2007 ... Stonisa Software

User's Manual

14

You are presented with a list of translations that are not in the Euroword data base but are all
probable because Euroword finds them to be interconnected consulting dictionaries in other then
selected language. You check all that you want to be added and then press OK to add them in
Euroword data base.

4.3

Maxi - form
If you are already familiar to Euroword mini version, than the maxi form will not be a problem to you.
As a matter of fact only two or three things are different in this maxi version.
Maxi doesn't stand for extra features but to normal window and standard windows look of the
software.
What Euroword offers to you in maxi flavor
OK, let's see:
One thing you don't have in mini version is unlimited list for results.
The second thing is possibility of making your own SQL queries for complicated searches.

2007 ... Stonisa Software

15

Euroword Help File

If you look in menu you will see that all the keyboard shortcuts of mini version are there and that
they are the same. How to use Euroword - maxi version?
At the top of the form there is a edit box, in which you enter word or fragment of the word you are
looking for. Then you can click one of the four keyboard combinations to obtain result list.
CTRL+LEFT. Finds all the words starting with text entered. This search is case sensitive. Previous
results are cleared. CTRL+SHIFT+LEFT. Same as previous, but previous results are saved and new
results are appended at the bottom. CTRL+Right. Finds all the words containing the text entered.
This search is not case sensitive. Previous result list is emptied. CTRL+Shift+Right. Same as
previous but, result list is not being emptied. SQL query. This is a true strength of Euroword - maxi
version, and the main reason for it to exists.
We always kept mention that Euroword is unique among other software dictionary in the fact that it
uses real SQL server as back-end. Meaning, standard SQL language can be used for entering
queries and obtaining result from a tables because every SQL server has a similar front-end.
You are free to make any query you want on Euroword tables. But some limitations must exist not
to make a mess.
First of all, result set your query returns must belong to the expected table and must contain fields
in order that is prescribed. To ensure this, when making query first part of the query is fixed and
can't be changed. It defines all previously stated as necessary.
Other thing specific to this is when using SQL on Serbian language you enter all in Latin and
conversion takes place. If you want to make queries on "TYPE" field use predefined macros from the
menu (SQL button on the top). Arrow buttons are for going through history, and minus button
deletes query from the history.

User's Manual

16

The rest is left for you, so you can make JOINS, use WHERE, CONTAINING, STARTING WITH, LIKE and
all other statements Firebird SQL understands. For a complete SQL reference consult Firebird
documentation.
For being able to use JOINS you may need following information's about table structure Euroword
uses:
EN, YU, DE, FR are table names for main dictionaries for all Euroword languages.
Every record has its unique ID field.
These fields are connected by means of interconnecting tables.
Every field in interconnecting table is linked by a foreign key index to a unique ID field in
corresponding main language table.
Field definitions of these tables listed bellow.

already have a proficient understanding of that language.

4.4

Euroword on USB Flash

You can make your own USB Flash disk with Euroword on it.
This way you can take your individual copy of Euroword always with you.
And you can maintain your own word base at work, home and travel and you will always have all
the words with you.
No need to install any other software on target computer.
All you need for that is USB flash disk with more than 320MB of free space.
Copy these files on the root folder of empty USB flash disk:

2007 ... Stonisa Software

17

Euroword Help File

It is reasonable to make them hidden (only file word.fdb, that is the actual database file must not
be read-only).
You can find many of these files in the folder you installed Euroword into, only files msvc71.dll,
msvcr71.dll are in the Windows System32 folder.

intl folder should contain these two files.

These files are all needed for Euroword to work properly. You can now start euroword.exe and
Euroword will start from USB flash disk. No installation, no hard disk usage.
If you want to further customize your USB flash disk, you can create AUTORUN.INF file as ordinary
text file with a following content:
[AutoRun]
open=euroword.exe
action=Euroword
icon=euroword.exe
label=STONISA.INFO
shellexecute=euroword.exe
shell\Start-Euroword\command=euroword.exe
shell=Start-Euroword

2007 ... Stonisa Software

18

Now when you insert your USB flash disk on a computer, it will be presented with an Euroword icon
and label STONISA.INFO, because of the settings in AUTORUN.INF file you created earlier.
Also, if you right-click on this icon you will see context menu with these options at the top.

If you double-click on this icon Euroword will start automatically.

AutoPlay options are listed below.

2007 ... Stonisa Software

19

Euroword Help File

If you want to explore disk content choose Explore, or Open.

If you don't want Euroword files to be located in root folder of your flash disk, copy it the the
Euroword folder, and create following batch file (text file with an extension .BAT).
@echo off
start .\Euroword\euroword.exe

Name it EUROWORD.BAT and save in the root folder.

Using start command allows for different drive names on different computers.
Then change AUTORUN.INF above to use this BAT file, and everything will work the same.
[AutoRun]
open=EUROWORD.BAT
action=Euroword
label=STONISA.INFO
shellexecute=EUROWORD.BAT
shell\Start-Euroword\command=EUROWORD.BAT
shell=Start-Euroword

Only Icon file must be located in the root folder (not in Euroword subfolder, so this line is omitted
this time).

Tables
Euroword data is SQL stored. SQL enforces strong typifying and strict rules.
