OBJECTIVE

VENUE

Students will practice speaking, listening,


and writing by communicating with a
school in the U.S. (Boston, MA) and
teaching their counterparts about
Malaysia. This will include both video
presentations and written letters. (ELPS)
Students will develop their own
sustainable initiative at SMK Katholik.
Students will practice speaking and
writing as they carry out their campaign
to the student body. (ELPS)
Students will learn how to publish a
bulletin and write articles in English.
Students will enhance their
speaking/writing skills by interviewing
other students/teachers for their articles
and also by editing the articles of their
peers. (ELPS)
Students will have the opportunity to
informally practice their English through
word games that will be made available
by the ETA Bulletin Board. The goal is to
help students with their speaking and
communication without feeling the same
pressure as in the classroom.
There will be weekly U.S. Trivia posted on
the bulletin board that the students can
attempt to answer correctly for a prize.

Plan and organize English Language Presentations (by the students) during every Monday and Thursday
school assembly.

Poems (both by famous authors and original poems by students)

Classroom English Activities:


Dictionary Unit
Introduction to what a dictionary is and its uses
o Use images on the chalk board to explain
Activity 1: Dictionary Scavenger Hunt
o Break students into groups and give each group a dictionary and a Scavenger Hunt worksheet
o Questions would include things such as:
What page do the Ws start?
What is the first definition of Victory?
What page can you find the word absent?
Activity 2: Dictionary Speed Competition
o Race to see who can find a given word first- The first team must read aloud the definition in order to get
points for their team
o Maintain a tally on the board of group points
o The games can become more complicated dependent on level and English proficiency
Introduce idea of Vocabulary Words of the Week

5 Words per week (for the upper classes, lower classes may have 3)
Break class into five groups, each group is responsible for finding the word in the dictionary and writing
the definition on the board.
Then the groups, together, will have to make up a sentence using that word (depending on the level of
the class)
Additional Activity: Put up sentences with blanks in them on the board. Have papers with the vocabulary
words in different areas of the room. Read the sentence and then have the student move to the area of
the room (with the designated vocabulary word) that they think best fits in the sentence. For lower
classes, use pictures on the board rather than sentences.
Continue the use of the dictionary and idea of Vocabulary Words of the Week throughout the year

Building Correct Sentences


Introduce the parts of speech and their meaning (noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction, etc.)
o Use School House Rock songs as teaching tools
Activity 1: Identifying Correct Parts of Speech
o Split students into groups
o Give each group a pile of individual words (cut out in paper)
o Let students browse through the words, a few minutes later, give each group cut out papers with the
parts of speech in bold
o Use previous vocabulary words to refresh the students memory
o Have students organize the words into the parts of speech
Activity 2: Continuation Activity for Upper Classes
o Have students arrange the words into sentences
o Ask each group to create 5 sentences using the words on their desks
Introduce parts of a sentence
o Subject, predicate, use of conjunction etc.
Activity 1: Creating full sentences (Simple Sentence)
o Give each student a cut out piece of a sentence
o Half get subject, half get predicate

Ask the students to identify if they have the subject of the sentence or the predicate
Have the students pair up to make complete sentences

Activity 2: Identification Competition


o Buzzer (slap table game)
o Break the class into four teams
o One person from each team comes up to the table at a time
o I will write a sentence on the board and underline one word or phrase
o The first student who slaps the table gets to identify the part of speech or part of sentence of the
underlined word
o If the student is correct, his/her team gets a point. If they are incorrect, the next student to slap the
table gets to answer the question
o Keep a tally on the board
Activity 3: Listening Activity
o Play popular American songs and have the students write down as many complete sentences as they can
o After the song is finished, pick a few students (or groups) to write their sentence on the board
o Then have students identify the parts of speech in the sentences that they identified in the song
Activity 4: Dictionary Work
o Show students where parts of speech is located in the dictionary
o Have another dictionary scavenger hunt (including identifying the numerous parts of speech of specific
words)
o Start incorporating parts of speech into weekly vocabulary words lessons
Train students to make a booking/appointment
Introduce Vocabulary Words of the Week that have to do with appointments
o Doctors appointments, dentist appointments, hair cut appointments, bus ticket bookings
o Teach select phrases dealing with appointments

Activity 1: Making an appointment


o Give students schedules with open slots and booked slots (create two schedules A and B)
o Have students with Schedule A get up and find someone with Schedule B and try to make an
appointment at a time that works for both parties
Use vocabulary and phrases previously learned
Activity 2: Role Playing (Short Plays)
o Give each group a scenario and roles
o Have the students write a script and perform to the class about making a booking
o I will write a number of words and phrases on the board that students can refer to
Train Students to socialize and make plans with friends
Follow-up to the Making an Appointment Lesson
Have a fun introduction with Call Me Maybe

Use similar phrases as with making an appointment, but add additional phrases that pertain to socializing

Activity: Individual and Group Socializing
o Give students roles and scenarios and have them walk around the class, socializing with friends.

Students will walk around the class, talking to other students, until they find two scenarios that match up
Students will then explain their scenarios to the class

Newspaper Article Unit


Introduce Vocabulary of the Week that deals with newspapers
Bring in print-outs of local newspapers (possibly some from my hometown, Georgetown, and Boston)
Activity 1: Speech Practice
o Have students get into groups and split the article up into even sections
o Each group will read their article to the class (every group member should read a section)
o I will then call upon the audience and ask them to sum up the article in one sentence (or ask for the
subject of the article)
Activity 2: Identifying key sections of articles
o Have each group circle or highlight the two most important sentences in their article that sum up the
article
Activity 3: Computer lab work
o Bring students to the computers and show them how to look up articles on the internet
o Have students research a specific sports team/famous person and find an article on that person
Students will then do a mini-presentation on that person, summarizing the article and telling the
class how they obtained their information

Unit on telling time (to be given before the units on making appointments and socializing)
Unit on inspirational heroes
o Incorporate practice of giving speeches

o Include reading and writing different styles of poetry

Cultural Exchange with a school in the U.S. (Boston, MA)
Students will practice speaking, listening, and writing by communicating with the school in the U.S. and
teaching their counterparts about Malaysia
o Include a component of letter writing (pen-pals)
o Part of the ELPS program

Environmental Club (Form 4 & 5 ELPS)


o Time: Thursdays at 2:40 20+ Students
o MACEE has a connection with a program that is supported by the MOE
o There is a sustainable fashion competition held by this organization with submissions due in May
o Students will additionally develop their own sustainable initiative at SMK Katholik
This will include writing articles, putting up posters, delivering speeches about the topic, and
researching environmental topics in Malaysia

SEMKA Monthly Bulletin Club (ELPS Form 3 & 4)


o Time: Mondays at 2:40 20+ Students
o Assist students in publishing a monthly bulletin about SMK Katholik
o Students will interview other students / teachers to obtain information for their articles
o Students will edit their peers articles to look for English mistakes
o Students will learn how to publish a bulletin and write articles in English
Word Games with Taryn
o One day a week after school I want to informally hang out in the English table outside and invite students
to come talk to me on an informal level and play word games, such as bananagrams, word searches,
hangman, scrabble, etc. with me. I think this will help students with their speaking and communication
without feeling the same pressure as in the classroom.
U.S. Trivia
o Each week, I will put up a trivia question about the U.S. on the bulletin board
o Students will be able to fill out slips of paper and answer the question
o I will draw one name each week from the correct answers, and that student will get a small prize
o The elected member of the English Language Society will assist me with the trivia
