Figure 5 shows a pile of beads, which is in the shape of a right circular cone of base radius 15 cm and
height 20 cm. The beads are in a cylindrical vessel of base radius 15 cm and height 20 cm.
(a) By considering the volume of a cone, estimate the total volume of the beads and express your
answer in terms of .
(b) Given that 3500 cm3 of water is needed to fill up the cylindrical vessel, find
(i) the actual total volume of the beads in terms of :,
(ii) the percentage error of the estimated total volume of the beads in (a).

Figure 7 shows two straight lines L1: x = -1 and L2 : x + 2 y = k . L1 intersects L2 and the x-axis at
A ( -1, p) and B respectively. L2 intersects x-axis at (10,0). D is a point on L2 such that
BD is perpendicular to L2

In a factory, the manufacturing cost of a plastic container of volume x litres is $C. It is known that C
is a sum of two parts, one part varies directly as x, the other part varies jointly directly as 2 and
inversely as n, where n is the number of containers produced. When x = 2 and n = 5000, C = 11.6;
when x = 5 and n = 4000, C = 37.5.
(a) Express C in terms of x and n.

(b) (i) The factory plans to produce 6000 containers at a cost of $30 each. Find the volume of the
container produced,, express your answer in surd form.
(ii) Is it possible for the factory to produce containers of volume 6 litres at a cost of $28 each?
Explain your answer.

12. Figure 8 shows two metal spheres touching each other and inscribed in a right circular cone. The
cone is filled with water and the large sphere is just submerged in the water. The radius of the small
sphere is 3 cm and that of the large sphere is 12 cm.

the probabilities that

A restaurant has 90 tables. Fig. II shows its floor plan where each circle represents a table. Each table
is assigned a number between 01 and 90. A rectangular coordinate system is introduced to the floor
plan such that the table numbered (10x + y) is located at (x , y) where x and y are the tens digit and
the units digit of the table number respectively (notice that the tens digit here may be zero).
(a) In Fig. II, shade all the circles satisfies the following constraints:
0x9

{
4x + 3y 24 < 0
(b)

annum, compounded yearly.
(i) Find, in terms of x, the accumulated amount in Mr Wong's bank account
(1) on the last day of the first year,
(2) on the last day of the second year.
(ii) It is given that the accumulated amount in Mr Wong's bank account on the last day of the tenth
year is $120 000. Using (a), find x correct to 1 decimal place.

(c) When Mr Wong starts his savings plan in (b), Mr Chan deposits $10 000 in Bank B at the beginning
of each year. Bank B offers an interest rate of 3.5% per annum, compounded yearly.
However, on the last day of each year, Mr Chan takes out the interest payable by the total amount that
he has deposited. Explain whether Mr Chan could get more total interest than Mr Wong on the last
day of the tenth year.
