Visual Studio Uninstallation:

Steps for Visual Studio 2008 uninstall:


Environment: Win 7/Vista/XP
This document explains how to uninstall Visual Studio 2008 in Windows 7/ Vista and
XP Platform.
Note: The uninstallation steps for Windows XP machine are similar to that of
Windows 7. Also the uninstallation procedure will be applicable for all editions of
Visual Studio (Professional/Premium/Ultimate)

To uninstall Visual Studio from your machine you have to uninstall 3 main
components as follows:

Uninstall Visual Studio


Uninstall Team Explorer
Uninstall Power Tools (If installed)

Please follow the below steps to uninstall Visual Studio and its components.
To Uninstall Visual Studio:
1. Go to control panel and click add or remove programs. In that select
Microsoft visual studio 2008 development edition

2. Then click remove button, it will show maintenance window. See below the
picture for reference
.

3. In that click uninstall visual studio 2008. See the below picture for example.

4. After that it will ask it will uninstall visual studio 2008 completely click ok.

5. It will start to uninstall visual studio 2008.

6. Finally the Microsoft visual studio 2008 has been uninstalled.

Note : Once the uninstallation of Visual Studio is complete using these steps , still
some components of Visual Studio will be present in the Control panel. These tools
are installed while installing Service pack for Visual studio and also Team Explorer.
These components can be uninstalled manually to complete the Visual Studio
uninstallation. Microsoft tool also can used to uninstall the remaining components of
Visual Studio.

Please ensure the following components are removed from control panel.

MS Windows SDK for VS 2008 Tools (x64)

After uninstalling the components, still the Microsoft Visual Studio 9 folder will be
present in the path C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0( C:\Program
Files \Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0 for 32-bit PC) with approximately 40-50 MB of data.
It contains the basic IDE data of Visual Studio; it can be deleted manually once all
the steps mentioned in this document are done.

To Uninstall Team Explorer:

1 .Open control panel and select Microsoft visual studio 2008 team explorer and
click and then click remove after that it will show below picture

3. Click on uninstall

To uninstall power tools:


The Power tools are a collection of various tools that can be used along with
Visual Studio. Following are the tools that will be installed under Power tools.
Command Line Interface
Visual Studio Integration
Check-in Policy Check
Process editor
Windows Shell Extension
PowerShell Cmdlets
Its advisable to uninstall Power tools using the Installation bits that are
present in MSDN depot to ensure they are removed completely. Please navigate to
closest MSDN depot and choose the path .\General\VisualStudioTeamExplorerAdditional tools\2010\Power Tools. You can find the list of MSDN depot here.
Please run the tfpt.msi file from the depot as shown in screenshot below.

If you get install screen similar to screenshot below, it means Power tools is
not present in your PC, hence you can skip this part. If not, please continue
with the uninstallation.

Power Tools Uninstall Steps:

1. Select the option Remove.

2. Click on Remove

3. Wait till the files are uninstalled .

4. Click on Finish to complete the uninstallation.

Page number 4 shows the name of the componets to be removed manually to


complete the VS 2008 uninstallation. Once all the components mentioned there are
removed, then VS 2008 uninstallation is complete.
Please reboot the machine once the above components are uninstalled.
After reboot , open the Registry Editor (Start Run regedit) and navigate
to the path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Microsoft->Windows>CurrentVersion->Uninstall.
Expand the folder Uninstall and scroll down. You must not be able to see an
entry named Visual Studio 2008 Professional or Visual Studio 2008
Ultimate
Note : The registry path is same for both Win 7 and Win XP machines.
Please reboot the machine once after all these steps are done and this will
completely uninstall Visual Studio 2010.
