Saudi Aramco Materials System Specifications

Document Responsibility: Standards Coordinator
General Information
Saudi Aramco Materials Systems Specifications (SAMSS) are specifications, approved
by Saudi Aramco Management, that establish minimum engineering, design, fabrication,
and testing requirements for the procurement of material and equipment. The
requirements in these specifications are mandatory and apply Company-wide in the
procurement of material and equipment. SAMSS are written to be attached to purchase
requisitions (PR), requests for quotation (RFQ), or purchase orders (PO). Specifiers
should not extract portions of SAMSS documents, nor write new specifications to procure
material or equipment already included within the Scope of approved SAMSSs.
Permission to deviate from these requirements must follow the procedures of SAEP-302,
Instructions for Obtaining a Waiver of a Mandatory Saudi Aramco Engineering
Requirement".
The responsibility for every SAMSS is assigned to a Standards Committee, or a
Department Manager. The document responsibility extends to its contents and the
interpretation of its requirements.
Sometimes, SAMSSs are developed from and based on the requirements of existing
international codes and standards. SAMSSs formatted as "Exception-style" documents
define requirements as additions, modifications, or deletions to industry documents,
using the same chapter/section/paragraph number system. For these specifications, the
specifier must utilize the SAMSS and its corresponding industry document to obtain the
complete set of Saudi Aramco's requirements. If an appropriate industry standard does
not exist, the SAMSS are developed and formatted as a "Narrative-style" document. In
this case, it will contain all of Saudi Aramco's requirements.
For a complete listing of approved SAMSSs, refer to the folder in DeskTop Standards
labelled "Material Specifications". For additional information on the use of SAMSSs,
or for instructions on preparing and obtaining approval of an SAMSS, see SAEP-119.
