Text: Multivariable Calculus, Fifth Edition by McCallum, Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, et al.

Calculator: The TI-89 is recommended for the course and will be used in class.
Course Description: The study of functions of several variables, vectors, optimization,
differentiation and integration of functions of several variables.
Homework: Homework will be assigned daily. I suggest that you do all of the assigned problems
and more if you feel you have not mastered the material. I will collect and grade the assignment
based on completion. You will be responsible for checking assignments for correctness. Each
assignment will be worth 2 points and the top 30 scores will count toward your grade only if it
helps your grade.
Problem Sets: In addition to the homework problems assigned from the book, there will be five
week problem sets (see the schedule for the due dates). The problem sets are meant as a way for
me to provide you with feedback on your work and to give you an idea of the level of
understanding that will be expected on exams. Each problem set will be worth 25 points. The top
4 problems sets will count toward your grade for a possible total of 100 points.
Exams: There will be 3 mid-term exams, each worth 100 points (see the schedule for the exam
dates). Exams will not be given early or late except in emergency situations. Emergency or
medical leave forms will be required in appropriate cases (see the WWU Catalog for policy
details).
Final Exam: The final exam will be comprehensive and will be given during the last 2 days of
class, Thursday and Friday, August 18th and 19th. The exam will be worth 150 points. The exam
will not be given early or late except in emergency situations. Emergency or medical leave forms
will be required in appropriate cases.
Evaluation: Your grade in the course will be based on the following:
Homework:
60 points
Problem sets:
100 points
Three midterm exams: 300 points
Final exam:
150 points
Assistance: Tutors will be available in the Math Center, BH 211A to assist you. I also encourage
you to work in groups, to ask questions in class, and to visit me during my office hours. Please
remember that it is important for you to be able to solve all of the assigned problems without
assistance when you turn in your work.
Notes: I will adhere to university policies laid out in the WWU Catalog regarding incomplete
grades, withdrawals, and academic dishonesty.
