Analyzing yourself
and selecting a field
of study

re you ready to take the next step in your

education and career planning, but are
unsure where to begin? There are so many
options today for areas of study in a college
or university, and sometimes it can be overwhelming to
narrow down the field. This article will help you analyze
your goals, skills, preferences and values so you can
make good educational decisions.

What are your goals?

Lets start by taking a look at your educational and
career goals, now that you have completed X standard
or XII standard.
Do you have a specific career field in mind? Do you
want to expand your money-making options or want
to train for a particular area? What are your financial
resources and lifestyle freedom or limitations right
now ? Is it important to attend a school that is close
to where you live now? Your particular circumstances,
goals and needs will help define your action plan.

Vocational training
When deciding on an educational path after XII
standard, you have an option to look at vocational
training or three-year college/university programs. As
a general rule, vocational training is a less expensive
and less time consuming option; however, a bachelors
degree in any field may open up more job and salary

Guide to Colleges and Universities in India

2012 QuinStreet

possibilities than the corresponding vocational

certificate.
If you have had a hard time in school up to this point,
need a shorter program, or know exactly what you
want to do and it happens to require a vocational or
technical degree (i.e. x-ray technologist), then getting
vocational training may make the most sense. You
can sign up for training at a local college or in online
classes. Some examples of vocational certificates
include lab technician, ultra-sound technician and
more. Vocational training can also provide a stepping
stone should you decide to return to school later on.

Three-year degrees
Getting a bachelors degree can mean different things.
You might decide to go to a big university or to a
small college. In either case, though, you will likely

www.IndiaEducation.net

Back >

Analyzing yourself and selecting a field of study

be in school full-time for a minimum of three years.

(Older students often choose to go to college parttime, which can lengthen the amount of time to get a
degree.)
Again, remember your goals. Are you eager to pursue
engineering, business or medicine? Make sure your
past grades are strong enough to gain entry into a
specialized training program to study math and science
subjects such as biology, physics and chemistry. Do
you want a more general education? If so, a bachelors
degree in liberal arts could be a good choice. You can
major in many different areas including humanities
subjects such as history, languages, philosophy,
religion and art. There are many other possible majors
as well, including forensics, womens studies, justice
and policy studies, to name a few. As a liberal arts
student, not only will you take courses in your major,
but you may sign up for classes in many other areas
as well, giving you a broad education. A liberal arts
education can have other benefits -- you may have the
opportunity to study abroad, gain practical experience
or perform relevant volunteer work.
On the other hand, some students have very defined
goals and want to train for a specific career. Nursing,
accounting and teaching are examples of this kind of
major. Students interested in these fields often opt
for a bachelors degree in a university or technical
institute. All of these studies are also available in online
schools. Fields such as nursing and teaching often
require students to get practical experience as part
of their training. If you are preparing for a particular
career, such as nursing, check to find out how your
online program incorporates hands-on experience.
Another reason you might choose to get a three-year
degree is to prepare for a graduate degree. Some
fields, such as law and medicine, either require or
encourage advanced degrees in order to progress

Guide to Colleges and Universities in India

2012 QuinStreet

in the field. For instance, to be a lawyer, you need a

J.D., to become a psychologist, you may need to get
a doctoral degree in psychology. A bachelors degree
would be a first step on the way to your dream career.

Skills/aptitudes/strengths

Next consider your skills, aptitudes and strengths. Is

the course of study you are considering a likely fit with
your strong points? For instance, if you are good with
numbers and solving problems, you might do well in
a field such as accounting, engineering, information
technology or financial planning.
People who have strong communication skills might
enjoy studying theater, teaching, psychology, social
work, journalism, writing or human resources. Creative
types might be drawn to film production, creative
writing, art, music, choreography and more.
Do you do well with hands-on tasks? Do you have
artistic talents? A good visual memory? Take a close
look at what you have been good at in the past,
whether at school or at home. Of course, just because
you are good at something doesnt mean you will be
happy doing that for a career. Assessing your strengths
can be one good way to begin narrowing down

www.IndiaEducation.net

Back >

Analyzing yourself and selecting a field of study

educational options. Look at what kinds of courses

and studies you have excelled at in the past, as well as
hobbies and personal interests that you have. Do you
have a strong knowledge base in a particular area?
Have you been out in the work-force and acquired
relevant experience to apply toward a career study?
Being good at something is a smart start to a satisfying
career.

Preferences

If you have never had the MBTI, you might find taking
it to be an interesting and useful exercise. A very useful
book for using the MBTI in career planning is Do
What you Are by Paul Tieggar and Barbara BarronTieggar.
Even if you dont take the MBTI, consider preferences
when making your decision. For instance, if you are
an analytical and logical type, you will likely prefer a
field of study that uses analytical reasoning, such as
engineering. If you prefer to work alone, you should
look for a field that will allow for that. If you enjoy
abstract concepts, then math, philosophy or art may
be good areas for you.
There are other kinds of preferences as well: your likes
and dislikes. Do you love the environment, medicine,
sports, food or books? Do you have another passion
such as cooking, exercise, music, languages or films?
Each of these interests can lead you to a possible field
of training. For example, a skill and love of art can be
expressed in a pure art degree, or in graphic design,
interior decorating, architecture and more.

We all have different ways of taking in information,

relating to others, seeing the world and structuring our
lives. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is the
most widely used assessment tool in career planning,
and it can give you a profile of your preferences. For
instance, are you energized by groups and outside
stimulation or by internal reflection? Do you pay more
attention to the details or the big picture? Do you like
to make decisions in an analytical, objective way, or in
a more personal feelings-based way? Finally, do you
like structure and planning or a more spontaneous,
information-gathering approach? The MBTI has a
scale for each of these dimensions, helping us to see
what comes more easily to you and what might be a
struggle.

Picking a career by passion has some advantages.

While it is good to have aptitude in the area you will
study, it is also desirable that you really want to learn
the material. Areas that we are really interested in
often come easier to us than ones with which we have
little fascination.

Values
Finally, as you develop a plan for career advancement,
think about your values. We each work for a variety of
reasons. Is it important to you to make a lot of money?
To express yourself? Do you want to contribute to
the world on a personal level or a broaderlevel (such

as scientific discovery)? Do you want to improve

the environment, become famous, connect deeply
with others or make your mark? Each of these goals
represents a part of your value system.

3. Philosophy and religion

Enjoy learning for learnings sake, good abstract
thinking skills, enjoy analysis of systems

4. Theater, communication
Take your journal and make a rank ordering of values
that are important to you. Some people want flexibility
or time at home with their children. Others want status,
fame, the ability to work outdoors, the ability to work
with people in service or cross-cultural experiences.
Values can be a powerful driving force in career choice.
As you get clearer on your own values, you may be
guided to careers that make sense.

Putting it all together

5. Psychology, sociology, anthropology

Intensely interested in people and how they
behave, good listening skills

6. English, journalism, creative writing

Enjoy expressing self and ideas through the
written word

7. Business, engineering

So how do you use all this data to make a good

decision? You may find it useful to try to make a journal
or folder where you record your ideas. Keep track of
careers and programs that interest you. You can even
cut out articles on different fields, or interview people
who work in careers that interest you. This project is for
your own happiness, so take it seriously! For optimal
success, you may do best in a field that combines not
only your skills and strengths, but your passions and
preferences. Below are some examples of different
areas of study and the preferences and interests that
might be a good match.

1. Hospitality and hotel management.

Strong organizational skills, can get tasks done and
work well with people. Enjoy a customer-service
environment

2. Medicine, from nursing to medical technician

to physician.
Strong interest in the medical field, good people
skills, good at analyzing data

products, and data

Next steps
Now that you have done a good inventory of
yourself and your preferences, skills, strengths,
values and passions, make a thorough study of
programs that interest you. Almost any college or
university has a website, and there are many books
available to guide you through available programs.
It is also a good idea to visit a website that features

online schools. Even if you decide not to attend an online school, you might find it a helpful exercise to see all the
variety of majors offered.
If you get stuck in your process, consider hiring a career counselor. Career counselors specialize in assessment,
inventories and processes that can help you to focus your career search. Alternatively, you could look at some books
that take you through this process such as What Color is Your Parachute? by Richard Bolles.
Taking the time to carefully plan your educational path can be well worth the time investment. The right program can
open up new doors to you -- hopefully showing you the way to a satisfying and rewarding career.

Educational options
in India

ndia has always been an epicenter for

education, but each student has to find his
or her path by critical self-analysis. Given
todays vast career options, it is vital to
have as much information as possible about various
educational options.
When choosing an educational stream after X
standard or XII standard, consider a training course or
a career based on your abilities, interests, aptitudes
and personality. Gather information regarding
different career options, the eligibility criteria and
the premier institutions/universities that can prepare
you for your career of choice. Certain subjects are
highly-competitive. For example, courses in aviation
may require you to have a very calm personality.
Identification of any additional requirements is vital if
you wish to take up a career in high-flying places.
Understanding the selection criteria and market
demand associated with various educational choices
can help you make a decision about the best
educational option to pursue at this time.

Broad course types available

This publication highlights different educational and
vocational courses and associated job opportunities
available through competitive examination after X
standard and XII standard coursework is completed.
Please note that this is intended for informational
purposes only and students should contact educational
institutes and organizations for further details.

Guide to Colleges and Universities in India

2012 QuinStreet

Courses in India are primarily divided into the

following types:
1. Those undertaken after passing Board Exams,
namely X standard (Secondary School Certificate
[SSC])
2. Those available to students completing XII
standard (Higher Secondary Certificate [HSC])
3. Those available to students completing their
graduation. (This includes MBA, MCA, MTech, MSc
and more)
This also works as a preliminary elimination criteria for
many competitive exams and educational institutes.

After X standard
For the most part, diploma and certificate courses

including vocational courses can be undertaken

immediately after X standard. Todays youth have many
career and education options after passing the XII
standard exam. Most popular are the diploma courses
which prepare you with practical training and on-site
work experience. This training can help students who
wish to enter the professional world without delay.

mean in their XII standard exams. These courses

prepare students for work ranging from data entry
to web design and networking. Hardware engineer
classes are also available and are popular.

Vocational courses such as mechanical engineering,

plastics engineering, wiring and electrical maintenance
are headed by the Directorate of Technical Education
(DTE). Each state has its own Indian Technical Institute
(ITI), which is instrumental in preparing students to
be productive right out of college with a minimal
orientation period.
Entrance Exams are required to qualify for elite
institutions such as the India Institute of Management
(IIM) and highly-desirable government services such as
the India Administrative Services (IAS) or Indian Police
Service (IPS).

After XII standard

Students who complete their XII standard exams
pursue university training in a variety of topics.
Highlights of popular fields of study include:

1. Business management streams.

Results-oriented coursework ranges from
management of office computers (MOC) to hotel
management. Courses in business management
include international business and operations
research.

2. Computers.
Various computer-related courses may be
appropriate for students who scored below the

3. Engineering.
Many students in India aspire to learn about
engineering. Those with good scores in their XII
standard exams, particularly students who score
well in physics, chemistry and mathematics, often
capply to an engineering school. In addition to the
prestigious Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs),
there are also many reputable engineering institutes
in India. For these schools, admission is granted
through mass competitive exams such as the AIEEE,
DCE, BCECE and various state-level competitive
tests. With competitive admissions policies,
hard-work is a must. Engineering has bifurcated
into many parallel fields including aeronautic
engineering. The topics are not only exciting, but
can also offer life altering experiences.

4. Medicine.
If you have earned exceptional marks in physics,
chemistry and biology in class XII, medical studies
may be a natural choice. However, getting admitted
to medical school may turn out to be even more
difficult than engineering. This highly respected

field has multiple competitive entrance exams

including the All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences
(AIIMS), Armed Forces Medical Colleges (AIFMC)
and others. Beyond the elite MBBS, the medical
field can include the study of dentistry, ayurvedic,
animal husbandry, homeopathy and other allied
branches of medical science that offer potential for
growth. Ayurveda has shown exceptional adoption
by todays generation, as the power and potential
of this most ancient form of medicine is better
understood.

2. University of Mumbai:

If a career in the armed forces interests you, India

has one of the best schools. Indian Army Schools
are known to offer one of the best opportunities
to serve the nation. They have their own entrance
exams and rigorous physical tests to select only the
best candidates who are physically fit and mentally
strong. If you believe yourself to be so, serving ones
country might be your first choice.
If attending a college regularly is not possible, there
are multiple options to acquire a certificate through
distance education. Indira Gandhi National Open
University (IGNOU), Sikkim Manipal University and
others offer varied courses that can be completed
while working.
For students who wish to work abroad, courses in
aviation and hospitality management may help open
doors to international jobs. Language courses have
helped many students get jobs abroad as translators.
There may also be opportunities for Indian students
in health care and assisted living facilities. Courses in
medical transcription can help students make a living
carrying out work within the medical field abroad.

Earning potential by

he educational path you choose can play a

major role in your career options and salary
down the road.

Everything begins with the educational choice you

make in the X standard. If youd like to enter the
workforce immediately, trade skills such as typing and
shorthand can be helpful, as can taking a diploma
course in engineering, data entry, food processing or
the service industry.
If you want to continue to the XII standard and beyond,
selecting a field of study is your first step. Science, for
example, is one of the most popular educational fields,
with degrees leading to potentially lucrative careers
in pharmacology, medicine or engineering. However,
if youre more interested in banking and e-commerce
jobs, consider studying accounting, commerce and/or
math.

Looking at cost of living

When deciding on a career, remember that where you
live can make a big difference, especially when it comes
to salary and cost of living. The cost of living within a
country can vary not only from urban to rural, but also
from state to state. According to the Central Statistics
Office, Delhi has a consumer price index of 113 (on a
normalized scale of 100), whereas the northeastern areas
of Nagaland and Manipur have consumer price indices
of 110.1 and 110.8, respectively.
This information can be important when deciding on
your career location because compensation is likely
to be influenced by your job location. For example, a
prospect seeking a software engineering role in Madhya
Pradesh may be offered compensation below someone
seeking a position in Pune, which may be lower still
than pay available in Mumbai. The lower pay is often
associated with lower rent, food and utility costs.

Applying to colleges

oving beyond XII standard and into Indian

higher education requires careful planning
and precise timing. After passing your XII
final exams, you need to take applicable
college entrance exams, visit colleges, submit
applications and make sure you have the funds to pay
your tuition. The following timeline walks you through
the process step-by-step, so you and your family are
ready to hit the ground running on the first day of
class.

October
(calendar year before graduation)
Apply to take competitive exams.
Some professional and higher learning
institutions require applicants to take a special
exam before admission. Key exams include the
All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE)
and the Indian Institute of Technology -- Joint
Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE). While the exams arent
until spring, you need to fill out and submit the
necessary forms ahead of time.

February

(sometimes March)
Xth and XIIth final exams.
Passing your X and XII standard exams,
sometimes called Secondary School Certificate
(SSC) and High School Certificate (HSC)

respectively, are mandatory before progressing

to the next educational level.

March
Start visiting schools and learning their
processes.
Because you cant apply for a college until your
XII standard exam marks are released in May,
March is a great time to begin visiting schools
in which youre interested. Its also important to
understand the application process of each of
these schools early to ensure you know exactly
how to apply down the road.

College application process

Take your competitive exams.

These are competitive exams such as the IIT-JEE
that many colleges require in addition to your
other scores.

May
Receive your exam marks.
May is typically the month in which XII standard
exam marks are released. Thanks to various
government initiatives, students can now access
their results via the Internet, email, text and
Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS).

Apply to colleges.
Colleges typically do not make applications
available until student exam results are released.
Once you get your exam marks, begin applying
to colleges immediately. At this time, you should
be familiar with your choice schools application
processes and be able to submit your materials
quickly. Luckily, many colleges and universities
now offer their applications online. To be safe, its
important to apply to multiple colleges.

For educational pathways such as engineering,

medical, management and others, many colleges
and universities are part of the Centralized
Admission Process. Here students fill out a single
set of admission forms and simply highlight
their colleges of choice in order of preference.
Make sure you fully understand the Centralized
Admission Process and how it fits with the
individual schools youd like to attend.

Check the merit lists.

In May and sometimes June, colleges display
their merit lists, which show if youve been
offered admission to the institution.

July
Confirm admission.
Once youve been accepted to a college, its time
to confirm your admission. Tell each institution to
which youve been accepted whether or not you
plan to attend in the Fall.

September
Apply for education loans.
Typically, you can only apply for an education
loan once youve finalized your admission to a
college. The amount you receive depends on
your course fees.
