ALBANIAN
PRONUNCIATION
Written Albanian is phonetically consistent and pronunciation shouldnt pose too
many problems for English speakers. Each
vowel in a diphthong is pronounced and
the rr is trilled. However, Albanian possesses certain letters that are present in
English but rendered differently. These
include:

as the th in this
as the gy in hogyard
as the y in yellow

The writing systems of Croatian and Serbian are phonetically consistent: every letter is pronounced and its sound will not
vary from word to word. With regard to the
position of stress, only one rule can be
given: the last syllable of a word is never
stressed. In most cases the accent falls on
the first vowel in the word.
Serbian uses both the Cyrillic and Roman
alphabet, so its worth familiarising yourself
with the latter (see p961). Croatian uses a
Roman alphabet.
The principal difference between Serbian
and Croatian is in the pronunciation of the
vowel e in certain words. A long e in
Serbian becomes ije in Croatian (eg reka,
rijeka (river), and a short e in Serbian becomes je in Croatian, eg pesma, pjesma

CZECH
PRONUNCIATION
Many Czech letters are pronounced as per
their English counterparts. An accent
lengthens a vowel and the stress is always
on the first syllable. Words are pronounced as written, so if you follow the
guidelines below you should have no trouble being understood. When consulting
indexes on Czech maps, be aware that ch

HUNGARIAN
PRONUNCIATION
The pronunciation of Hungarian consonants can be simplified by pronouncing
them more or less as in English; the exceptions are listed below. Double consonants
ll, tt and dd arent pronounced as one letter
as in English but lengthened so you can
almost hear them as separate letters. Also,
cs, zs, gy and sz (consonant clusters) are
separate letters in Hungarian and appear
that way in telephone books and other
alphabetical listings. For example, the word
cukor (sugar) appears in the dictionary before csak (only).

ROMANIAN
Until the mid-19th century, Romanian
was written in the Cyrillic alphabet. Today
Romanian employs 28 Latin letters, some
of which bear accents. At the beginning of
a word, e and i are pronounced ye and
yi, while at the end of a word i is virtually
silent. At the end of a word ii is pronounced
ee. Word stress is usually on the second
last syllable.
