Image segmentation is an important problem of

digital image processing and also a common
difficult problem. The research conducts a survey of
image thresholding methods based on entropy in
recent years. First, the analysis of some
representative thresholding methods has been made
from several aspects, such as the ideas of algorithm,
key technology. Then, the thresholding function of
these typical methods is listed. At last, we evaluate
the performance in the context of non-destructive
testing applications based on the combined
performance measures. The above work can give a
valuable reference for image segmentation.

In this study, we make a survey of the most famous

11 Entropy-based thresholding methods, and give
the threshold function for each method.
Furthermore, we assess the performance of each
method to NDT images through a new criteria AVG.
Although people have done a lot of segmentation
research, there is not a segmentation method
generally applicable to all images and different
methods are not equally suitable for a particular
domain. Besides, none of a criteria for evaluate the
performance of each segmentation methods and
only one evaluation method would not be enough to
judge all properties of an algorithm, so we suggest
that one should consider application-specific
information and evaluate the performance by
Combine different criteria if people want to obtain
better thresholding results.

The proposed method uses projection profile

features and on pixel distribution statistics for
segmentation of text lines. The method also detects
text lines containing consonant modifiers and
merges them with corresponding text lines, and
efficiently separates overlapped text lines as well.
The character extraction process computes character
boundaries using vertical profile features for
extracting character images from every text line.
Further, the word segmentation process uses kmeans clustering to group inter character gaps into
character and word cluster spaces, which are used to
compute thresholds for extracting words. The
method also takes care of variations in character and
word gaps. The proposed methodology is evaluated
on a data set of 1008 low resolution images of
display boards containing Kannada text captured
from 2 mega pixel cameras on mobile phones at
various sizes 240x320, 600x800 and 900x1200.

The proposed line extraction method gives very

good performance for the images with variability in
font size and style, free segmentation path,
overlapped text lines, and degraded images. The
method achieves text line segmentation accuracy of
97.17%, word segmentation accuracy of 97.54%
and character extraction accuracy of 99.09%.
However, the method performance can be improved
integrating skew detection and correction
mechanism. And character extraction process can be
enhanced to work in the absence of free
segmentation path.

An Evaluation

Edge Detection
Techniques in
Digital Image

Edge is a sudden change that occurs in an image.

Edge Detection is the approach used most
frequently for segmenting images based on abrupt
changes in intensity. It is a concept that covers a
number of fields in todays environment. In this
paper the survey of different Edge Detection
techniques like classical, augmented or may be a
derived algorithm in different bases such as Fuzzy
Logic, Genetic Algorithm, or Neural Networks and
others which are used as Soft Computing
Approaches today, are comparatively studied.

All the edge detectors described in this paper

provide optimal edge detection. The step edges
model imposes two conditions that the transition is
abrupt and the intensity is kept constant. The
detectors described do identify the objects, circles,
lines etc. Still the detectors miss the real edges and
produce unsatisfactory results. Errors may be
caused due to image characteristics, the wrong
selection of algorithms and the implementation
methods. In order to overcome the unexpected
results and annoying noisy images each algorithm is
used such that the signal to noise ratio for that
image is higher. This
paper helps differentiate the algorithms and study
their design, such that their applications in different
fields lead to better results according to the
requirement.

Image Segmentation is one of basic problem and is

an important step in image processing to distinguish
important object that is of our interest from
unnecessary background substrates. So, quality of
this step also affects the subsequent steps of
recognition. In this paper, we have compiled Edge
detection method, Thresholding method, Region
based method, and Clustering.

This paper, classify and discuss the traditional &

popular image segmentation techniques including
Gradient based image segmentation, Laplacian
based image segmentation, thresholding region
growing method, region split-merge method,
clustering, k-mean clustering. Ostu methods are
reasonably good thresholding methods if one
demands more uniformity and better shape of the
object in the binary image. Although number of
techniques are available, each technique works on
specific concept hence it is important which image
segmentation techniques should be used as per
application domain.

This paper summarizes various available Feature

Selection Methods based .There is still lots of work
is about to develop to handle the Multidimensional
Data Set. All the methods are efficient over the
specific domain analysis. The current methods are
better than the method was using in the past, but it
increases the computational cost also. In future we
will identify the best method which improves
performance of classification.

Recent researches on feature selection have been

conducted in an attempt to find efficient methods
for selection of relevant features. Feature selection
generally involves a combination of search and
attributes utility estimation plus evaluation with
respect to specific learning schemes. There are
several methods to select features in ensembles
systems and genetic algorithms (GA) are one of the
most used methods. This paper gives overview of
feature selection Algorithm which searches the
feature space using the idea of evolutionary
computation, in order to find the optimal feature
subset.
