Joint Meetings with

CUHK Toastmasters Club (New Asia College)
and Public Officers (HK) Toastmasters Club

Aside
from
regular
meetings held on Tuesday
and Friday evenings at HKU
Campus Toastmasters Club,
joint meetings with other
Toastmasters clubs have
been organized in order to
facilitate exchange with other
Toastmasters in Hong Kong
and polish our members
public speaking skills.
On 11th November 2013,
a joint meeting was held with
CUHK Toastmasters Club
(New Asia College). Since
11th November was also
dubbed Singles Day, the
organizers set relationships
as the theme of the meeting.
As one of the speakers at
the meeting, Carrie Chan (BA,
I) delivered her speech titled
My Comfort Zone, where
she told the audience how she
was inspired by her friend to
step out of her comfort zone.
The table topics session was

jointly conducted by our club

president, Lee Kyung Min (B.
Econ & Fin, II), and a member
from CUHK. The table topics
masters asked questions
based on a YouTube video
that had recently gone viral in
Hong Kong, titled My lifes
wish is to find a girlfriend
who would be content with
having McDonalds with
me. May also asked the
participants why being single
was better than being in
a relationship, prompting
interesting responses. Another
member, Serene Ho (BA
(Conservation), I), evaluated
a humorous speech delivered
by Michelle Cao from CUHK.

Bitty Ng, the president of

Public Officers Club, gave the
audience many useful tips in
pubic speaking. To highlight
a few, she demonstrated how
to use body gestures and
appropriate voice projection
in order to deliver an effective
speech.

The evening was a fruitful

exchange of public speaking
techniques among students
from the two universities.

Ho Sheung Lam Serene

Another joint meeting

was held with Public Officers
(HK) Toastmasters Club on
29th November 2013. Billy
Cheung from Public Officers
Club gave us a lively kickoff
to the meeting with the Word
of the Day, aspire. Amanda
Lee from the same club
delivered the best speech for
the evening; she recounted
her experience of caring for
her elderly father, which
touched many in the audience.

86

Not only have the joint

meetings with CUHK New
Asia College and Public
Officers Club served as a
great channel for knowledge
exchange, they have also
created opportunities for
our members to meet other
Toastmasters from all walks
of life.

The Book Thief : the waging war within humanity

The Second World War
is arguably one of the most
brutal wars in human history.
Yet, amidst the bombing, the
killings and the tortures, there
is a German girl in Himmel
Street who tries to find hope
in stealing books. Narrated
by death, Markus Zusaks
critically acclaimed novel
The Book Thief tells the story
of Liesel, as she experiences
pain, loss, love and friendship
during the Nazi regime.
War is one of the most
horrific and worst things that
human beings are capable
of creating. We have all
learned that in history lessons.
According to history, Adolf
Hitler set up Nazi Germany and
started an era of dictatorship,
genocide and violence. The
Nazi dictatorship and Second
World War can be said to be
a reflection of humanity at its
worst. As a novel set in such
a dark era, one might predict
The Book Thief as a book on
the horrors of human nature.
However, in the mist of all
these horrors, Zusak draws us
into hope and love. Though
Liesel grows up against the
backdrop of a world war and
totalitarian regime, cruelty and
violence are not all she sees.
She also witnesses the beauty
that humans are capable of.
She sees familial love from

her foster parents, Hans and

Rosa Hubermann. She finds
friendship and love in a Jew
called Max Vandenburg and
her neighbor Rudy Steiner.
She finds sympathy from Ilsa
Hermann, the wife of the
mayor. She also finds comfort
in the words in books.
What exactly is a human
being? We know what it is.
We can picture a human in
our heads. Yet, to answer that
question specifically seems
like a difficult task. This is the
same question that Death finds
extremely distressing. He is a
bystander in Liesels story and
witnesses her days in Himmel
Street. Through her life,
Death sees both the horrors
and beauty of human nature.
There is a scene in the novel
where Rudy and Liesel find
a dying enemy fighter pilot
in his crashed plane. Instead
of watching him die, Rudy
gives the pilot a teddy bear to
hold on to. Death witnesses
this scene when he comes to
collect the pilots soul and
is amazed by Rudys action.
He later reflects, Im always
finding human at their best
and worst. I see their ugly and
their beauty, and I wonder how
the same thing can be both.
He keeps on wondering and he
can only conclude by saying,
I am haunted by humans.

94

It is interesting to see
ourselves in the perspective
of a nonhuman character.
How odd and alien are we to
a person like Death! He has
seen the violence and murders
that humans are capable of,
yet he is also a witness of the
kindness and warmth humans
show to people at their
deathbeds. To him, we are a
bunch of contradictory and
complex creatures. Indeed,
even if we see ourselves in his
perspective, we might also be
baffled at the cruelty and love
we are capable of. We might
come to the same conclusion
as Death and feel haunted by
our complexity.
Markus Zusaks beautiful
novel gives us a view of the
war of good and evil within
humanity and helps us to
see ourselves in a different
light. Liesel once said in the
novel: I have hated words
and I have loved them, and I
hope I have made them right.
We may also have the same
feeling towards human nature.
We may love the beauty we
inhabit, yet shocked by the
horrors we created. Perhaps
the best way to respond to this
realization is to walk path we
deem as right.
Ng Sze Ching, Patricia

Loving Cage

The bird chirped joyfully- or so it thought- in the

loving cage it was placed in.
Not having known any other life but the current one, it
had always been content and
found the greatest fulfillment
in performing songs to people around. At present people
only referred to its owner, old
Mrs. Chan.
Birdie remembered a
time when the world beyond
his cage was noisier, with more
laughter, anger and human activity. It vaguely remembered
days when smaller humans
were around and would crowd
around the bird for song. As
they grew bigger, the household became louder, and a
boy came one day to talk to
the bird. It was a word, much
repeated, something that was
passionately brought forth.
It was airy like wind... Was it
breeeeeeze? Or freeeeeee?
The bird couldnt recall. He

couldnt fathom the reason

of the commotion, but a little
while later, it died down and
only the old woman was left in
the mansion.
Now Birdie really loved
the wrinkled old lady. She was
now a lady with no other occupation but to listen to the
little birds song. She would
wait, even in the wee hours
of night, for the bird to sing.
However, birds did not sing
in those hours, but logic did
not bother Mrs. Chan. I wish
my darling boys would come
back, the younger one was a
musician like you, you know,
Yet the bird, asleep, gave no response. They said they wanted to be free, free from me...
But they were too wrong, they
were young and didnt know
better...
The moon shone like a
spoon and spilled a magical
silkiness over the household. It

was a ray of hope for the lady.

Those bad kiddies always keep
her mother worried, she muttered repeatedly, pretending
the bird could hear. At least
you are in my little cage and
will not run away from me.
A gush of wind rushed in
and threatened to knock Mrs.
Chan over. She nearly stumbled but was able to grab the
edge of the mahogany table
to steady herself. Mrs. Chan,
slowly and carefully, wobbled
over to the front door to pull it
shut. At the doorstep, however, she hesitated. The mid-autumn night was serene and
bright. It was like a huge teardrop. Dazed by the beautiful
sight, Mrs. Chan sighed and
slowly closed the door. She
will open them tomorrow, and
the tomorrow of tomorrow, in
case her boys forgot to bring
their keys.
