SOLID WOOD DOORS

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
For centuries, American hardwoods have been
appreciated for their beauty, warmth, durability,
and lasting value. Todays consumers are adding
green and sustainable to the reasons they
choose oors, cabinets, and millwork made from
domestic hardwoods. Sustainability is all about
meeting todays needs without compromising
the needs for future generations.

MIRRORING NATURAL
FORCES
In a hardwood forest, trees compete for the
water and sunlight that come through the forest
canopy. Koetter Woodworking carefully harvests
individual trees, creating openings which allow
more precipitation, sunlight and nutrients to
reach the forest oor. This single-tree selection
method of harvesting reduces competition and
improves growing conditions. In practice for
decades, this mirrors the natural process of
single trees or small groups of trees perishing and
falling on their own.

OUR COMMITMENT TO
THE FUTURE
For nearly 50 years, Koetter Woodworking
has been committed to the sustainability of
our industrys timber base. We personally
oversee every aspect of the harvest from our
company timber grounds, as well as purchased
standing timber, acknowledging BMPs (Best
Management Practices) and all recognized
harvesting and silvicultural criteria.
In U.S. forests, we grow about twice as much
hardwood as we harvest each year. Whats
more, trees renew themselves on their own, and
in great abundance! With far more hardwood
growth than there is harvesting, American
hardwoods are the denition of environmentally
friendly, green, and sustainable today and for
generations to come.

CAPE COD

8VeZ8dYY
A variation of Colonial architecture, the original Cape Cod
was a one-storied home with shingled sides and a large
center chimney. Over time, people added to the houses,
either doubling the half cape or adding a wing to the rear.
Dormers were cut into the roofs to add more space, light
and ventilation.

The Cape Cod is symmetrical in appearance with a center

door and formal, center-hall oor plan. Interiors are simple,
featuring wide plank ooring, beaded wainscoting and
beamed ceilings. Borrowing from the New England homes
of the 17th century, this cottage style has consistently
appealed to generations of Americans for its simplicity and
charm and is one of the most recognized house styles in
North America.

COLONIAL

8dadc^Va
a a
Inspired by the houses of early settlers, colonial architecture
expresses the American ideal of home. More than 300 years
ago, the rst Colonial homes were built by pioneering settlers
on the eastern seaboard. Known for their symmetrical design
and understated beauty, Colonial-style homes embrace a
nostalgia for general, antebellum living.
Built before the era of industrialization, Colonial houses
featured a characteristic handmade quality in elements
such as doors, windows and brickwork. Architectural details
in todays Colonial home include wide-plank ooring,
wainscoting, crown moulding, elegantly turned balusters for
staircases, impressive replace mantels, box ceiling beams and
pediments above windows and doors elements that add
dimension and welcoming interest to the home.

The contemporary home is typied by the simplication
of form and the elimination of ornament less is more.
Conceived early in the 20th century, modern architecture
was reaction against lavish stylistic excesses and driven by
the availability of new building materials like iron, steel,
concrete and glass and the new design exibility found in
the materials.

Interior spaces in a contemporary-designed home are

open and airy, using a free arrangement of large windows
to emphasize natural light. Floor plans are sparse and
simple with minimalist architectural touches. From doors,
to mantels, to staircases - the contemporary home is
streamlined and asymmetric with clean lines throughout.
This continues to the exterior of the home with the use of
at roofs and multiple rooines. Overall, the industrial look
and feel of the modern home is complemented by its ability
to facilitate functional, clutter-free living.

Craftsman Houses were primarily inspired by the work of
two inuential architects from southern California brothers
Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene. The
unpretentiousness and informality of this architecture has
given rise to a number of essentials associated with the style.

Exposed rafters, beams, or rafter ends are common.

Large porches with pedestal-like tapered columns create a
welcoming rst impression, while interiors feature simple,
unadorned mouldings, wide-plank ooring, beamed
ceilings, wainscoting, and built-in cabinetry. The simple
functionality of the Craftsman style has made it a treasured

Incorporating the eclectic styles of Mission and Spanish
Revival architecture, Southwestern designed homes combine
natural elements of wood, stone and tile, creating a warm,
comfortable, and relaxed environment. Southwestern homes
feature smooth, stucco asymmetrical exteriors, tile roofs,
beamed ceilings as well as arched windows and doors.
While the earlier Mission Revival style is quite simple,
Spanish Revival architecture is more ornate with intricately
patterned tile, applied relief ornamentation, and wrought
iron grillwork. Southwestern architecture is popular in
warm, tropical settings however, it is a welcome design
wherever homeowners want to enjoy the warmth of this

TUDOR

Towards the end of the nineteenth century, Europeantrained architects, brought the eclectic Tudor style to
America. Based on English homes that were built near
the end of the medieval period, the style is named for the
Tudor family, which ruled England during that time. The
exterior of a modern-day Tudor style home features false
half-timbered stucco, duplicating the look of the original
building technique which was an integral part of the
homes structure.

Other features include beautifully patterned brick or

stonework, cross-gabled, steeply pitched roofs, and tall,
narrow windows. Fine craftsmanship is a prized characteristic
of the Tudor interior, dened by arched doors, wainscot
paneling, decorative mantles, beamed ceilings and millwork
with ornamental detailing, providing a sense of history

TUSCAN

IjhXVc
The Tuscan style of architecture originated in England in the
1840s. Prior to that time, English homes were more formal
and classical in appearance. With the picturesque movement,
builders began designing elegant recreations of Italian villas.
By the late 1860s, the Tuscan style house was one of the most
preferred architectural styles for homes in the U.S. and it has
maintained its popularity to this day.

The appeal lies in the simplicity of design. Typically

featuring an open oor plan and a mixture of Old World
and Mediterranean styles, homes decorated in the Tuscan
style are inspired by the elements of nature. Todays Tuscan
home is characterized by wide-plank ooring and wooden
beams, along with arched windows and doorways. Accents
of wrought iron, stone and tile are also typical features of
Tuscan style architecture.

The Victorian style of American architecture spanned
from about 1860-1900. During that period, builders
and architects developed several variations of overlapping
architectural styles, with Gothic and Queen Anne being the
most predominant. Traditional Victorian rooms featured
tall ceilings which called for larger mouldings, often
combined with decorative blocks.
Todays Victorian home represents this same ornate and
grand design with distinctive architectural elements like
asymmetrical facades, steep gabled roofs, wrap-around
porches, and other fanciful details such as decorative
brackets and spindle work. Interiors feature replaces with
heavy mantels, elaborate moulding combinations and doors

Our louvered doors are manufactured with a unique

raised panel louver design, where the louvers are set
into a raised panel frame, which is then set into the
stiles. Unlike traditional louver door construction,
there is no end-play, which provides stability and
eliminates rattles. As with our standard raised panel
doors, surgical rubber spacers are used around the
panels to allow for expansion and contraction.
Perhaps, most importantly, this method of
construction offers you the ability to match your
louvered door sticking and panel raise proles to
your paneled door proles and thereby maintain a
consistent design throughout your project.

QUALITY CONSTRUCTION FEATURES

Proles are precision machined

with diamond and carbide tooling,
resulting in well-dened detailing.

Solid wood panel construction

provides crisp, detailed edges
unlike veneer wrapped panels.

5/8" x 4" solid wood dowels

are used at every stile and
rail joint providing added
strength and stability.

Free oating panels with exible

rubber spacers allow the panels
to stay centered during normal
expansion and contraction.

Solid wood stiles and rails are

manufactured from hand-selected
lumber. No veneers or nger-jointed
stave cores are used in the construction
of our doors.

DOOR INFORMATION
All doors manufactured by Koetter Woodworking, Inc.
are individually shrink-wrapped, with some exceptions,
for protection against moisture and dirt. Doors can be
pre-hung with the shrink-wrap still intact until they are
delivered to the job site and are ready for nishing.
Koetter Woodworking doors are available as slabs or as
pre-hung units. We can hang doors on a variety of jamb
widths, and we have a large selection of hinge styles and
nishes to choose from.
Koetter Woodworking stock, paneled doors are pre-beveled
3o on both edges to allow for ease of hanging.
Job-lot quantities of pre-hung doors up to 8'0" tall are
shipped vertically on steel skids. These skids can be
forklifted off at your facility where you can then ship
them directly to your job site. This reduces the chances
of doors becoming damaged during shipment, as well
as providing an easy method of loading and unloading
large quantities of doors. Any door units wider than
3'4" and all double hung units will be machined and
pre-assembled but shipped knocked down.
Pre-hung units over 8'0" tall are shipped on horizontal
wood pallets.
All steel skids remain the property of Koetter Woodworking
Inc. and must be returned within 30 days.
All raised panel doors are manufactured using solid wood
construction no veneers.
All panels are free-oating with rubber spacers
between the panels and the rails, which allows
the panels to expand and contract as the humidity
levels change.
Koetter Woodworking can manufacture doors to meet
almost any specication or design. If you dont see it
in our catalog, just send us a picture of what you are
looking for, and we will do our best to match it.

CARING FOR YOUR HARDWOOD DOORS

STORAGE AND HANDLING
1. Doors should always be stored at and in clean, dry
surroundings. Protect from dirt, water, and abuse.
2. Shrink-wrap should always be left on solid hardwood doors
until ready for nishing.
3. Doors should not be exposed to excessive moisture, heat,
dryness, or direct sunlight.
Areas to avoid storing doors:
- Wet basements
- Areas with uncured concrete
- Areas with wet drywall mud
- Any other open environment that is not humidity
controlled
4. Doors should always be handled with clean hands or while
wearing clean gloves.
5. Doors should be lifted and carried, not dragged across one
another.
FIELD FINISHING
1. Prior to nishing, insure that the building atmosphere is
dried to a normal interior relative humidity. Insure that
the doors have been allowed to equalize to a stable moisture
content.
2. Prior to nishing, the nisher must do a thorough nal
sanding using a 150-grit abrasive over the entire surface to
remove all scuffs, handling marks, scratches, raised grain,
and effects of exposure to moisture that may occur during
handling, unloading, and storage.
3. Certain species of wood contain chemicals that react
unfavorably with certain nishes, causing dark stain spots.
Where possible, the species/nish combination should
be tested prior to nishing the doors. Notify your nish
supplier immediately if any undesirable reaction is noticed.
Do not continue with the nishing until the problem is
resolved. For best results, spray nishing is recommended.
4. In order not to induce warpage, avoid dark stains or darkcolored paints on door surfaces that are exposed to direct
sunlight.
5. A rst coat of thinned, clear sanding sealer followed by
a light block sanding will minimize subsequent handling
marks and promote the uniformity of subsequent stain coats.
When working with poplar, the use of a medium-to-dark
stain is recommended. Consult with your nish supplier for
suggested nishing techniques on various species.
6. All exposed wood surfaces must be sealed, including the top
and bottom rails.
7. To achieve the desired results of color uniformity, nish build,
gloss, and to reduce the frequency of renishing, obtain and
follow nish manufacturers recommendations.
8. Be sure the door surface being nished is satisfactory in both
smoothness and color after each coat before applying the
next coat.

INSTALLATION
1. The utility or structural strength of the doors must not be
impaired in tting to the opening, in applying hardware, in
preparing for lites, louvers, or plant-ons or other detailing.
2. Use a minimum of 3 (three) hinges per door on all interior
and exterior doors. When hanging a door that is 7'4" and
taller, we recommend using 4 hinges.
3. Clearances between door edges and door frames must be a
minimum of 1/16" on the hinge edge and 1/8" on the latch
edge and head.
4. All hardware locations, preparations for hardware, and
methods of hardware attachments must be appropriate
for the specic door construction. Templates for specic
hardware preparation are available from the hardware
manufacturer.
5. Apply the sealer, primer, or rst coats of the required nish,
on exterior doors, immediately after tting, cutting the
hardware, weather-stripping, etc. and before the installation
of any hardware.
6. For exterior door applications, apply an elastic caulk around
the exterior sides of the panels and/or glass to prevent water
from entering the core of the door. This will also allow the
panels to oat when expansion and contraction occurs.
MAINTENANCE
1. Most nishes on exterior doors deteriorate relatively quickly.
For exterior doors to continue receiving the protection
required, inspect the condition of exterior nishes at least
once a year and renish as often as needed to maintain the
protective integrity of the nish.
2. Insure that the doors continue to swing freely, without
binding in the frame, and that all hardware remains
functional.
RETURNS
All doors returned to Koetter Woodworking must be properly
packaged to insure that they are not damaged during the shipment
back to our plant. Drivers are not responsible for any doors that are
not properly packaged.

LIMITED DOOR WARRANTY

Koetter manufactured doors are warranted for one (1) year
from the original date of purchase. Koetter Woodworking, Inc.
guarantees its doors to be of good material and workmanship,
and to be free from defects at the time of shipment that would
render them unt for the purpose for which each door is
intended.
TERMS OF WARRANTY
Should the warranted door be found to contain defects as
stated above, Koetter Woodworking Inc. will at its option,
either (1) repair any door without charge, or (2) replace any
door as it was originally, or (3) ask that the door be returned
and refund the full KW selling price. In the event a defect is
discovered by inspection of a door upon receipt of shipment
from Koetter Woodworking Inc., notice must be given within
10 days thereafter and before the door has any additional work
preformed on it and/or the door is installed. If the replacement
option is used, the door will be shipped to the distributor of
origin at the same price as the original and credit given when the
warranted door is returned. No labor, installation or renishing
expenses are covered by this warranty. The appearance of eld
nished doors is not covered by this warranty in any event.
Natural variations in color, texture or general surface appearance
of wood are not considered defects. Any deterioration or failure
contributed to by the failure to protect and seal ALL surfaces
including the top and bottom of the door either prior to or
immediately after hanging are not covered by this warranty. All
exterior doors should have an over hang adequate to protect
the surface of the door from direct weather conditions. (The
minimum recommended overhang distance from the exterior
wall where the door is installed is equal to the distance from
the bottom of the door to the highest point under the overhang
and the width should extend half this distance from each edge
of the door unit.) Any condition or problem caused by failure
to follow the recommended handling, application, nishing
and installation instructions as outlined are not covered by this
warranty. We can require that an inspection be made by one
of our service representatives and that the door be returned
for inspection by our engineering group prior to adjustment,
repair or replacement. Koetter Woodworking, Inc. shall not be
liable for consequential, indirect, incidental damages or for any
amount in excess of the manufacturers price for the door or
door unit involved.
HANDLING, FINISHING, AND
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Since these doors are shipped to you unsealed and unnished,
we cannot warranty against the natural characteristics of the
wood which may occur in the various conditions encountered
from our plant to your nished opening. Because the wood
can respond in different ways to the variety of atmospheric and
environmental conditions, it is imperative that special attention

58

KO E T TE R W O O D WOR K IN G, IN C. www.koetterwoodworking.com

is given to the door and the necessary care and effort taken
to protect the door in the unnished state to minimize the
potential for problems.
Slab doors shall always be stored at or in a vertical position
(not leaned against a wall), in a clean, dry environment.
(Recommended HVAC operational and maintaining a
relative humidity of 35-45% at a temperature of 65-75.)
Doors shall not be exposed to excessive heat, dryness,
humidity, moisture, or direct sunlight prior to nishing.
Handle door with clean gloves and do not drag doors across
each other or other surfaces.
Deliver doors to the jobsite after plaster or sheetrock mud
is dry.
Doors on the jobsite must have all edges completely sealed
with a premium nish (stain or paint) appropriate for the type
of use the door will have such as interior or exterior (one with
at least a 15 year warranty). Finish must be applied within one
week of delivery. Prior to nishing, re-sand the entire surface of
the door and remove all handling marks with 150 grit or ner
sandpaper and remove all sanding dust. Apply sealer, primer, or
rst coat of required nish immediately after tting, machining
for hardware. All exposed surfaces of the door must be sealed,
including the top, bottom, side edges, and the hardware cutouts.
Use only oil-based stains, sealers, or primers on the exterior
doors. If water-based paint is to be used, it must be applied
over an oil-based primer. (Note of Caution: An interior grade
lacquer is NOT a satisfactory product for exterior use. A marine
grade nish is the best and will best protect your investment on
exterior doors.) At least three (3) coats of exterior grade varnish
with a UV Inhibitor must be applied to all exterior doors. In
order not to induce warp or excessive deterioration of your door,
avoid using dark stains or paints on the door surfaces exposed
to direct sunlight. Most nishes, particularly on exterior doors
deteriorate relatively quickly. To ensure exterior doors receive
the protection required, inspect the condition of exterior nish
at least once a year. Renish as soon as nish deterioration is
visible to maintain the protective stability of the nish. Be sure
to ensure that you renish all six sides. Glass and panels in
exterior doors must be sealed to the sticking with a small bead
of silicone on the exterior side. This will not totally bond the
panels to the door so they can not move but will seal the joints
so that water can not enter the interior of the door.
All doors 7'4" must have at least 3 hinges and doors over 7'4"
and taller must have at least 4 hinges or all warranties concerning
warp or twist are void.
INSULATED GLASS LIMITED WARRANTY
Koetter Woodworking, Inc. warrants our insulated glass for a
period of ve (5) years from the date of manufacture, against
permanent failure of the hermetic seal, directly attributed to

failure of the seal is caused by an Act of God, damage as a result
of exposure to corrosive fumes or condensates, damage resulting
from excessive stress from movement of the structure, glass

by any other cause not within our exclusive control. Under the
terms of this warranty, our obligation is to replace the defective
glass, F.O.B. dealers warehouse from which the original sales
was made. No labor, installation and/or consequential damages
are included. For a period of ve (5) years after manufacturing,
a replacement insulated glass panel shall be furnished, for

considered out of warranty. Doors under 8'0" used as pocket
doors will only be considered out of specication in terms of
warp if the warp is more than one-fourth inch (1/4") regardless
of their height. If a door is not properly nished, protected
from the elements or otherwise cared for all warranties including
warp are void. If a door warps it may be necessary to leave the
door installed for up to one (1) year to insure proper moisture
equalization before the door is deemed out of specication. This
waiting period if required will not effect the warranty term.
Door Width
Doors over 3'0" wide up to 4'0" may be prone to increased
twist and or warp, therefore they are warranted at 1-1/2 times
the normal warp tolerance. Excessively wide doors (over 36")
may also be prone to unusual stress which will increase the risk
of splitting and warping, therefore, are warranted for only 6
months.

Inc., is not warranted.

failure to protect and seal all surface and edges of the door
either prior to or immediately after hanging.
Due to the excessive heat build-up, any exterior door used
with an un-vented glass storm door will not be warranted.

WARRANTY CLAIMS AND RETURNS
In an effort to better serve our customers, Koetter Woodworking
Inc. has warranty claims policy and procedures to track all
warranty claims. All warranty returns must have authorization
before the product(s) are shipped back. Any return must be given
prior authorization by your sales representative before returning
items for claim or credit. All returns should be accompanied by a
completed Return of Goods Authorization so that the return can
be quickly identied, traced as to customer and circumstance,
and processed efciently. It is understood that many warrantable
circumstances do not develop and fully become apparent until
well after the product is installed, but some defects or aws may
be detected as soon as the door or sidelite is unpackaged. Since
many minor aws can be repaired or corrected, all items should
be inspected thoroughly for such defects upon receipt and before
machining. Please be aware that the machining of a door or
sidelite constitutes acceptance of the product as it was received
by our customer. Any minor aws or defects that may exist at the
time of machining will not be considered as defective product or
claimable once additional labor has begun. So, please inspect all
items thoroughly before the machining process takes place.
Please be aware that any credit due for defective product is not
processed and issued until the defective item has been returned.
Any required replacement product is invoiced at the original
unit price as it is shipped. All items returned must be packaged
properly in order to insure that credit due is processed efciently,
and to protect against any further unnecessary damage to the
product. Proper packaging includes an adequate pallet, proper
top, bottom and edge protective covering. Items not given
adequate packaging protection during return shipment may void
the warranty.
Koetter Woodworking, Inc. wants to support our customers
with a warranty that covers defective conditions based on
industry standards of acceptability. We take a fair and objective
view of any warranty situation, but it is important to understand
that a warranty does not cover any and all problems that may
occur. We urge you to call if you have questions or need further
clarication on our warranty conditions or relating to any
specic situation that you may encounter.

HOW TO ORDER YOUR KOETTER WOODWORKING DOORS

STEP 1

Determine your door style by choosing from our selection of stock Poplar doors or from one of over
300 custom door designs.

STEP 2

Determine the quantity, thickness, width and height of your doors..

STEP 3

If you have selected a custom door style, choose our collection of 13 standard species shown on page 54.
If your doors will be painted, consider one of our MDF panel options.

STEP 4

If your door is custom, select a rail and panel (or glass) combination shown on pages 46-47. To simplify the selection
process, we have grouped the rail and panel/glass options together based on the groove size in the rail.

STEP 5

Are your doors pre-hung? Choose the appropriate jamb width including the specie. List the swing for each door along
with bore specications (standard bore, no bore, etc..) Choose your hinge size and nish and select any additional
hardware needed such as ball catches, ush bolts, or t-astragal.

TIPS

Always group like doors (by style, thickness and height) together on your order.
Start with the narrowest width, working up to the widest. List your double doors at the end.
When ordering double doors, note the width of the opening and base your quantity ordered by the opening width.
Ex: If you have two openings that are 5'0" wide, requiring double doors, you would order 2 5'0" doubles
which would consist of 4 doors.
Please order your Koetter Woodworking doors separately from doors that come from other manufacturers
(Woodport, TruStile, etc..) This will prevent possible processing delays with your order.
