AXT 12103

AXT stand for Automatic exchange transit switch.

(PABX) Private Automatic Branch Exchanges switches.

Sweden made (Ericsson company).

Enter into service in R.J.A.F. (1986 1987).

AXT 12103 has been developed for military networks needs.

In Jordan we have (11) AXT12103 switches exchanges, ( 10 ) of

them is in service now.

AXT12103 can works with analogue or digital networks, or in

mixture of both.

AXT12103 is a (stored, program, controlled system) SPC system,

it consists of a switching unit with a digital switch (TSM) and a
control unit with a control processor (CP) and a number of regional
processors (RP).

One switch (TSM) has (512) multiple positions or time switch or

channel, we can connect up to (3) switches (TSM), so the total
capacity for one exchange (1536) multiple positions.

In some AXT12103 exchanges we have two (TSM'S) thats mean

(1024) multiple positions.

We can take from AXT exchange different type of subscribers

like: 2 Wire subscribers, 4 Wire E&M subscribers.
Subscribers from (PCM) links (2MB) connected.

AXT12103 is a compared of local exchange and transit exchange.

Local exchange:AXT12103 handles traffic both from normal telephone sets, (PABX)
exchanges and other types of subscribers equipment (PMBX)
exchanges as (hicom, hybrex, siemens, etc.), the (10) exchanges
1

work as one exchange so we dont need to add access code to make

calls between AXT subscribers, if we program one subscriber in any
AXT exchange, it well automatically determined in the others .

Transit exchange :Transit traffic is switched through the AXT12103 network and to other
networks, when any trunk routes between AXT12103 exchanges is out
of service or all channels are busy also if there is no direct cables
between AXT's exchange, the traffic calls are divert automatically to
another trunk route and thats can be determined with a special menu
in AXT exchange ( determined by levels priority ) .

AXT01

AXT02

AXT03

AXT04

Calls from AXT02 to AXT04 goes through AXT03 switch (transit

purpose).
If the cable between AXT03 and AXT04 is out of service or all
channels are busy, traffic calls will goes from AXT02 to AXT03
to AXT01 then to AXT04.

NETWORK STRUCTURE.
AXT12103 is able to cope with both mesh as well as star and loop
network structure.

SYSTEM STRUCTURE.
It consist of three levels:1- System (APT, APZ).
2- Subsystem (magazines for APT, APZ).
3- Functional units (boards, buses, .).
AXT12103 is divided to two main parts:-

1- APT101:- switching system (hardware).

2- APZ101:- control system (software).

APT101 SWITCHING SYSTEM (HARDWARE).

Switching system APT101 is implemented partly in software and partly

in hardware, it contains the traffic processing functions of the exchange
as well as operation and maintenance functions. The software of
switching system is thus physically placed in the stores of the processors
of the control system.
The control part of the switching system APT is a duplicated digital
switch (TSM) WITH (512) multiple positions. Terminal units and other
types of equipment for interface functions towards different types of lines
are connected to the switch like (ETC, MJC, SMD) magazines.

APT101 is divided into the following subsystems:a- Switching Subsystem (SWS).

SWS:- Controlled from TCS, handles the setting up and release of
connections through the system switch.
b- Trunk and Signaling Subsystem (TSS).
TSS:- Performs interface functions towards lines connected to the
system.
c- Operator Subsystem (OPS).
OPS:- Handles the functions which are associated with attendant
(operator) assisted set-up of calls.
d- Common Channel signaling Subsystem (CCS).
CCS:- Performs interface functions towards lines to other
exchanges in the AXT121 network.
e- Traffic Control Subsystem (TCS).

TCS:- In a superior way and on the basis of information from other

subsystems, controls the setting up and release of connection
through the system.
f- Operation and Maintenance Subsystem (OMS).
OMS :- Contains functions for supervision, start of the system for
administration of exchange data.
SWS, TSS, CCS and OPS consist of hardware as well as software,
while TCS and OMS contains software only.

(SPM) do this work.

Magazine / D :- (CLM) clock module

We have 3 CLM s detected in cabinets 01, 02, and 03 in shelf D,
used to make synchronization between AXT exchanges by sending
the synchronized freq.( 8 Khz ) on the synchronized channel on the
trunk route cable which is ch. # (0) which connected via (ETC)
magazine ( 2Mb PCM ), if there is any distortion or deviation on
the frequency between any AXT exchanges this will cause trouble
for the communication, like ( humming, distortion, clicks, weak
sound ).
We have one master exchange in AXT network, ( AXT 04 master )
( AXT 07 stand by master / slave ).

In the master exchange we have ( 3 RCM ) ( Reference Clock

Module ) boards, but in the slave exchange, we have ( 1 RCM )
board. In normal conditions its in stand by mode ( not working )
because the exchange get the synchronized frequency from another
exchange, but when there isn't any synchronized frequency are
coming for one exchange by the trunk routes between the AXT'S
the ( RCM ) will start working automatically and give the
frequency needed for the ( 3 CLM'S ) inside the exchange to let the
subscribers make calls between them inside that exchange.
( CLM ) contains ( VCXO ) Voltage Control Crystal Oscillator,
phase generator and phase comparator, all of these are used inside
the ( CLM ) magazine to handle the frequency between the ( 3
CLM'S ).
There are two type out put frequency from the ( CLM ) :1- 8 KHZ :- Synchronized between AXT exchanges.
2- 4.096 MHZ :- used inside the exchange .
Both frequencies are in phase .
Magazine / E,F,G :- (TSM) Time Switch Module
Its the hardware important part in APT101 system, each TSM can
control 512 time slots for subscribers or channels, exchange
capacity at maximum ( 3 TSM ) magazine equal ( 1536 ) time slot.
In AXT exchanges, some have ( 2 TSM ) 1024 time slots, and
others have ( 3 TSM ) 1536 time slots.
Each ( TSM ) contain ( 4 LMU ) boards, each ( LMU ) board
connected with it ( 4 ) groups, groups could be ( ETC, SMD, MJC )
magazine, each group contain ( 32 ) time slot or channel.
So each board ( LMU ) can handle = 4 * 32 = 128 time slot .
There is ( 16 ) group in one ( TSM ) = 16 * 32 = 512 time slot .
Cabinet # 3 :Magazine / B :10

changes to ( save ) any changes on the tape.
When its (OFF) not lighted this will be for two reason :a- Tape knob is in save mode.
11

b- Write permit (OFF), behind the silver door in the tape

drive, we have ( 4 ) black switches , if they are in the
(LEFT) position this mean the tape is protected from
any changes, if they are in the (RIGHT) position its
allowed to make save for any changes .
3- REWIND / UNLOAD :- ( switch )
used to rewind the tape, after loading the data the tape
will rewind to first automatically, also this button
allowed the tape to rewind to first by pushing it for
more than ( 2 -3 sec. ), and then this will eject the tape
from the tape drive , but ( ON LINE ) switch should be
( OFF ) first to do that.
4- ON LINE :- ( switch lighted ON )
used to give indicator that its allowed to get loading or
saving to the tape .
There is an indicator lamp inside the tape drive ( 14 V DC lamp )

POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM

We have some devices used in power supply system:1- RECTIFIER : Type of rectifier (BMT 243 48/15).
Used to supply the exchange with (-48 V DC),the I/P is (220 V
AC) and the O/P is (-48 V DC) , with maximum current (25
AMPS).
19

At least we have (3) rectifiers used in power supply system because

AXT exchange cabinets need at least (32 AMPS) , and that depends
on how many magazines that are used in AXT cabinets .
Each rectifier takes power supply source from separate phase
circuit , and the (3) rectifiers are in phase with each other .
We can make adjustment for the out put voltage or current in
board (ROF 137 0965/1) on potentiometer (p1,p2,p3).
2- INVERTOR: Type of inverter ( BMS 602 001/1 ).
The input of power source is (- 48V DC) from the rectifier or from
the batteries, the out put is (220V AC ) used to supply or feed the
(VDT and PRINTER) when the power main source supply cut off
or out of service.
3- CONVERTER : Type of converter ( BFD 201 101/1 ).
The input ( - 48 V DC ) from the rectifiers or from the batteries,
the out put is ( 24 V DC ), used to supply the cipher equipment
( Encryption ) with this power to work .
4- ELECTRONIC FUSE : Type of electronic fuse ( BGB 95010/050 )
Used to protect AXT cabinets or magazines from any high
voltage or current that could come from the rectifiers or the
batteries .
Each electronic fuse card can handle ( 5 Amp. ), we can
increase it to ( 10 Amp. ) by making short for ( 2 pins ) locate
inside that card .
Each switch in the front panel of the electronic fuse can handle
( 5 Amp. ) .

distilled water .
Each battery give us ( 2.2 V DC - 800 A/h ) .
All cells give us ( 50,6 VDC + 5% ).
All set can handle power supply for ( 8 hour ) at least .
Specific gravity ( 1240 ).
6- CHARGE CONTROL UNIT : Consist of three boards :
a- ROF 137 0907/1
b- ROF 137 0908/1
c- ROF 137 0979/1

The boards ( a & b ) are used to control charging and

discharging for the battery when main power source is out of
service .

The board ( c ) used to display any alarm that could

happened in the power supply system and also used to make
sharing to the out put voltage and current from all rectifiers .

There is also a trip switch used to make ( ON ) and ( OFF )

for the power from the battery. In normal situation it should be
(ON) position , because when the main power supply source is
out of service ( the rectifiers will be out of service ) and the
charge control unit let the battery set to supply the exchange
cabinets and the other devices like ( inverter , converter ) with
the required power , when the main power source retain back
again ( the rectifiers will start working again and supply the
21

exchange with the required power ) and the charge control unit
will start automatically make charging for the battery cells.

If this switch is set down to ( OFF ) position, that could be

used just to make testing for the battery set voltage and specific
gravity for the Acid, so the main source doesn't affect our
testing .

The earth is connected to the positive side to decrease the

attenuation and power noise or interference.

Type is ( Contact CD 421 )

Used for encryption (encoding and decoding ) digital coaxial trunk
routes cables ( 2 Mb ) between AXT exchanges from the both side.

Power supply ( 220 V AC , or 24 V DC ), we usually used (24 V

DC).

The cipher consist of :1. Front panel ( six cards is connected to it ) .

2. Link interface PCM board.
3. Enciphering unit board.
4. Power supply unit.
5. Deciphering unit board.
6. System computer board.
7. Mux interface board.

Programming :

The cipher consist of ( 7 ) Keys, key no. ( 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 ).

Each key consist of ( 8 ) group of numbers.

Each group contains ( 3 ) digit number, we inter ( 3 ) digit

number and the device add the fourth digit.

The device show us ( * ) on the screen display to indicate the

device is working ( ok ).
23

If we press
button alone this will appear the working
key no. between the trunk routes.

To change the working key we press

and button no.
( 3 ) at the same time, the screen show us ( Change To ), so we
chose a new key number to be on work like ( 7 ), so the screen
show us (Key 7 OK), THEN GIVE US ( * ).

Dont press
time because this

well delete all the ( 7 ) keys from the cipher memory

( Emergency Erase ), this could make the traffic calls to be out of
service on the trunk route cables.

APZ101 :- (CONTROL SYSTEM ) SOFTWARE.

The control system APZ101 is based on two different types

of processors with different tasks:1.

Central processor ( C.P ) which is duplicated for

reliability reasons and complex functions are performed on it.

2.

A number of regional processors ( R.P ), routine

program functions requiring high capacity are executed in the
regional processors.

APZ101 is divided into the following

subsystems:1.

Central Processor Subsystem, ( CPS ).

CPS consist of both hardware and software, the central unit in
CPS is a duplicated processor type ( APN163 ), the analyzing
and decision making functions of the software for switching
system APT101 are stored in and executed by CPS.

2.

Regional System Subsystem, ( RPS ).

RPS consist of hardware and software, the capacity
demanding routine functions of the APT software are stored in
and executed by RPS, which includes one regional processor
R.P for each controlled unit.

24

3.

I/O Sub system, ( IOS).

IOS consist of hardware and software and handles the man
machine communication, and input / output of programs and
data.

4.

Maintenance Subsystem, ( MAS ).

MAS consist of hardware and software and its purpose is to
supervise APZ and take action in case of a fault . MAS also
includes functions for start and restart of the processors.

The system processor is ( APN163 ).

The language is ( PL163 ), which divided to:1.

2.

High level language, which consist of four types of

languages (Pascal, Fortran, Algol, PL/I ), so a fault in a program
not affected all program but a part of it.
Assembly Language ( Man Machine language ).

The ( VDT ) is connected to the AXT via a ( V 24

Mux ) interface board, in AXT central room it is possible to
connect the ( VDT ) to any of the other exchanges in the network,
the communication to one other exchange is carried out by help of
the common channel signaling due to this the VDT is denominated
to be connected logically to that AXT.

The ( PL163 ) is appeared on the VDT screen as

( MENUS ).

We have ( 2 ) types of menus ( F1, and F3 ) MENUS.

VDT USING :1.

Switch ON .
