BARCELONA On May 3, 1882, Rizal departed on board the Spanish steamer SALVADORA bound for Singapore. Before his secret
departure, he wrote a farewell letter for his beloved parents and another one for his sweetheart Leonor. After finishing the 4th year
of the medical course in U.S.T., Jose Rizal decided to complete his studies in spain for several reasons; He is disgusted with the
method of instruction and racial prejudice of Dominican professors against Filipino Students. At that time the government of Spain
was a constitutional monarchy which granted human rights, freedom of speech, freedom of the press and freedom of assembly.
Rizal's Secret Mission Conceived with the approval of his older brother Paciano.
He was to observe keenly the life and culture, languages and customs, industries and commerce, and governments and laws of the
European nations in order to prepare himself in the might task of Liberating his oppressed people from Spanish Tyranny. However,
Rizal's departure was kept secret to avoid detection by the Spanish Authorities and the Friars. During the voyage, the ship captain
Donato Lecha from Asturias, Spain, befriended him. Rizal Described him as an affable man, "much more refined than his other
countrymen and colleagues that I have met". On May 8, 1882, he saw a beautiful island that made him remember the "Talim Island
with the Susong Dalaga". On May 9, Salvadora docked at Rizal spent two days on the city which was a colony of England. In
Singapore, Rizal transferred to another ship named Djemnah, a French Steamer which left on May 11 to Europe. Because the
Djemnah is a French Vessel, Rizal attempted to converse with his fellow passengers in French. To his surprise and embarrassment,
he found out that his French which he learned at Ateneo could not be understood. He had to speak in Spanish-Latin supplemented
by gestures and sketches for others to understand him. By conversing daily, he was able to improve his knowledge of the French
Language. On May 17, The Djemnah reached Rizal was unimpressed by this town. He said, "The General appearance of Point Galle is
picturesque but lonely and quiet and at the same time sad.". COLOMBO is more beautiful, smart, and elegant than Singapore, Point
Galle, and Manila "Inhospitable land but famous:. "The city hotter than Manila" He was impressed by the beautiful moonlight which
reminded him of Calamba and his family. Built by Ferdinand de Lesseps (French Engineer). It was inaugurated on November 17, 1869
on June 11, Rizal reached The city pleased him because of its business activity, it's lively people and its business activity. On June
12, the steamer docked at the French harbor of He visited Chateau d'If where Dantes, hero of The Count of Monte Cristo, was
imprisoned. On June 15, Rizal left Marseilles for Barcelona. Rizal finally reached on June 16, 1882
