WORKING IN GROUP

Question: Each student will reflect on his/her participation in the SSG small group of which he/she is a member. Applying the
group development stages of Tuckman, she/he will identify and analyze issues of the group and draw lessons learned as the
result of his/her participation in the group.
INTRODUCTION
In this assignment, I will introduce about Tuckman map. In this map has 4 stages include: Forming Storming Norming
Performing. The group development stage was first proposed by Bruce Tuckman in 1965, who maintained that these phases
are all necessary and inevitable in order for the team to grow, to face up to challenges, to tackle problems, to find solutions,
to plan work, and to deliver results.
FORMING
With forming stage, I will talk about the fixation period for the development of the group. My group has five people and I am a
leader, so my mission is connect all members in group together, team organization, who does what, when to meet each
other, etc. In addition, of each member the mission of them is introduce about themselves (character, hobby, habit,). After
that, we will discuss about the mission and target that our group will do in the future. Simultaneously, we will be division of
labor for each member in group. At first, I must check and find the people who is suitable for the labor and then I just
allocate. This is a comfortable stage to be in, but the avoidance of conflict and threat means that not much actually gets
done.
STORMING
This is the stage that any newly formed group must also undergo. We will face the internal conflict in the team. All members
have their own ideas about the development process and how the collective work, but the personal views often somewhat
extreme. Moreover, the storming stage is necessary to the growth of the group. It can be contentious, unpleasant and even
painful to members of the group who are averse to conflict. Tolerance of each team member and their differences should be
emphasized. Without tolerance and patience the group will be fail. This phase can become destructive to the group and will
lower motivation if allowed to get out of control. Some groups will never develop past this stage. I am a leader in group, so
my job is supervise of the group during this phase may be more accessible, but tend to remain directive in their guidance of
decision-making and professional behavior. The members will therefore resolve their differences and members will be able to
participate with one another more comfortably. The ideal is that they will not feel that they are being judged, and will

therefore share their opinions and views. Normally tension, struggle and sometimes arguments occur. This stage can also be
upsetting, but if my group wants success, we must try to past this stage.

NORMING
In four stages, norming is a stable stage because my group will have one goal and come to a mutual plan for our group at
this stage, so someone may have to give up their own ideas and agree with others to make the group function. In this stage,
all team members take the responsibility and have the ambition to work for the success of the team's goals. As a result, the
group members strengthen relationships with each other and the system established general principles and standards in the
way of organization, methods and workflow. In addition, the eagerness and enthusiasm of each member in group are always
at a high level, and the group was attracted to how to go beyond the limits of the initial development process.
PERFORMING
This is a final stage in Tuckman map. To come here, these high-performing group can function as a unit as they find ways to
get the job done smoothly and effectively without inappropriate conflict or the need for leader supervision. In some
situations, in group will have some conflicts, but it is channelled through means acceptable to the group. Maybe, with the
perfect group , the members are now competent, autonomous and able to handle the decision-making process without
supervision
