REPASAR
LAS DESTREZAS
Repaso de comprensin escrita
Consulta las destrezas de comprensin escrita sobre las
que se trabaja en el Students Book One y el Students
Book Two. Intenta aplicar alguna de ellas cada vez que
leas un texto.
Recuerda que antes de centrarte en las preguntas debes
leer el texto por encima para captar la idea principal.
Siempre que leas un texto, anota el vocabulario nuevo
para poder repasarlo despus.
Asegrate de que sabes qu tipo de preguntas se
pueden plantear en el examen, y practcalas con
frecuencia. En el Students Book Two encontrars pistas
tiles y actividades prcticas sobre las preguntas ms
habituales de los exmenes.

VOCABULARIO Y
ESTRUCTURAS
Si quieres obtener un buen resultado en el examen, es
fundamental que repases y practiques la gramtica y el
vocabulario todo lo que puedas. Siempre que respondas
a preguntas de vocabulario y gramtica, debes repasar
tu trabajo con detenimiento, fijndote tambin en
la ortografa, el orden de las palabras en la frase y la
puntuacin.
Repaso de vocabulario
Consulta las pistas de aprendizaje y repaso de
vocabulario en la pgina 122 de este Workbook.
Asegrate de que sabes qu tipo de preguntas se
pueden plantear en el examen, y practcalas con
frecuencia. En los Students Books encontrars pistas
tiles y actividades prcticas sobre las preguntas ms
habituales de los exmenes, incluidas las relativas a
sinnimos y definiciones.
En algunas regiones, los alumnos deben responder a
preguntas sobre pronunciacin. Para prepararlas, anota
en tu cuaderno de vocabulario cmo se pronuncia cada
palabra. Tambin puedes consultar los apartados de
Vocabulary Reference de los Workbooks (pginas 123
127), donde aparecen las palabras que has aprendido,
y tambin su pronunciacin. Finalmente, encontrars
una tabla de smbolos fonticos en la pgina 106.

En el registro informal del ingls hablado a veces se utiliza
was en la primera y tercera persona del singular.
If he was taller, hed be quite good-looking. Si fuera ms
alto, sera bastante atractivo.
Uso
El condicional de segundo grado se utiliza para referirse
a situaciones presentes y futuras hipotticas, es decir,
situaciones imaginarias e improbables.
If people listened to me, theyd understand the problem.
(People dont listen to me so they dont understand
the problem.) Si la gente me escuchara, entendera el
problema. (No me escucha, luego no lo entiende.)

Si hubiera tenido algo de experiencia, habra conseguido
el trabajo. (No tena experiencia, por eso no consegu el
trabajo.)

TRANSFORMATIONS:
CONDITIONAL SENTENCES
Para transformar una frase en una oracin condicional
de primer, segundo o tercer grado, debemos seguir
estos cinco pasos:
Transformacin: I didnt give him anything because I
didnt have enough money.
1 Observa la frase original y decide cul es la referencia
temporal: pasado, presente o futuro: I didnt give ...
(pasado).
2 Decide qu tipo de condicional necesitas (de primer,
segundo o tercer grado): algo que nunca sucedi
(condicional de tercer grado).
3 Escoge la forma adecuada del verbo: I had had; I
would have given.
4 Escribe la frase completa y comprubala para decidir
some.
si necesitas hacer algn otro cambio: any
Corrige la puntuacin.
Respuesta: If I had had enough money, I would have
given him something.

En las condicionales de primer, segundo y tercer grado,
los verbos modales pueden sustituir a will y would en
la proposicin que describe el resultado de la accin.
If Im tired tonight, I may not go to the party. Si esta
noche estoy cansada, puede que no vaya a la fiesta.
If I knew the answer, I could help you. Si supiera la
respuesta, te podra ayudar.
If Id listened to her problems, I might have been able
to help her. Si hubiera escuchado sus problemas, quiz
podra haberle ayudado.
ALTERNATIVES
FOR IF
as long as / providing that
As long as y providing that se pueden utilizar con
el significado de only ... if (nicamente si) en las
condicionales de primer y segundo grado.
Si la proposicin condicional encabeza la oracin, se
aade una coma detrs.
As long as people are aware of the problem, the
situation will improve. (The situation will improve
only if people are aware of the problem.) Si la gente
es consciente del problema, la situacin mejorar. =
La situacin slo mejorar si la gente es consciente del
problema.
unless
Podemos expresar condiciones negativas con unless,
que significa a menos que. Recuerda que siempre
debe aparecer en la proposicin condicional:
Unless the government acts quickly, the economy
will get worse. (The economy will get worse if the
government doesnt act quickly.) Si el gobierno no
acta con rapidez, la economa empeorar. = La
economa empeorar si el gobierno no acta con
rapidez.
even if
Even if se utiliza para subrayar la proposicin
condicional.
I wouldnt give them any money even if I was a
millionaire. Aunque fuera millonario, no les dara
dinero.
Even if we had got there earlier, we wouldnt have
been able to help. Aunque hubiramos llegado antes,
no habramos podido ayudar.
wish
Wish + pasado simple / continuo indica que nos
gustara que algo fuera diferente en el presente.
I wish I didnt have to work. (I have to work.) Ojal no
tuviera que trabajar. (Tengo que hacerlo.)
I wish it werent raining. (Its raining.) Ojal no
estuviera lloviendo. (Est lloviendo.)
Wish + past perfect expresa arrepentimiento respecto a
acciones del pasado.
I wish Id stopped to help them. (I didnt stop to help
them.) Ojal me hubiera parado a ayudarles. (No lo
hice.)
Wish + would se utiliza para quejarse de un hecho o
una situacin actual.
I wish he would be nice to his sister. (He isnt nice to
his sister.) Me gustara que fuera ms agradable con su
hermana. (No es agradable.)
I wish you wouldnt complain all the time. (You
complain all the time.) Me gustara que no te quejaras
constantemente. (Siempre te ests quejando.)
Tambin se puede utilizar if only en lugar de I wish.
If only we were in the same class. = I really wish we were
in the same class. Ojal estuviramos en la misma clase.
= Me encantara que estuviramos en la misma clase.
If only you hadnt driven. = I really wish you hadnt
driven. Ojal no hubieras conducido t. = Me habra
encantado que no hubieras conducido t.
If only tiene un matiz ms enftico que I wish.

hablar hasta los tres aos.
Be able to (que no es un verbo modal) + infinitivo se
utiliza para expresar posibilidad en el futuro.
Ill be able to work weekends. Podr trabajar los fines

Be able to tambin puede expresar posibilidad o
capacidad en past simple, present perfect y past perfect.

afirmativa, pero totalmente diferente en negativa. Mustnt
expresa una prohibicin, mientras que dont have to indica
que no hay obligacin de hacer algo.
You mustnt work seven days a week. (= Dont work seven
days a week.) No debes trabajar los siete das de la semana.
= No trabajes los siete das.
You dont have to work seven days a week. (= It isnt
necessary to work seven days a week.) No tienes por qu
trabajar los siete das de la semana. = No es necesario que

Ought to y should se utilizan para dar consejos y hacer
recomendaciones.

Should y ought to tienen un significado parecido, pero
ought to es algo ms formal que should.
Had better + infinitivo (sin to) se utiliza para dar
consejos y expresar intenciones. Had better (not)
tambin sirve para hacer advertencias.
Youd better post that today. (consejo) Conviene que lo
eches al correo hoy.
Youd better not be late or Ill go without you.
(advertencia) No llegues tarde, porque me marchar sin ti.
Id better go now. (intencin) Ya es hora de irme.

can, could, be allowed to
El verbo can se utiliza para expresar permiso en presente.
Can I leave now? Me puedo marchar ya?
I cant go. No puedo ir.
Puesto que can no se puede utilizar en todos los
tiempos verbales, se sustituye por be allowed to, que no
es un verbo modal.
I wont be allowed to get a part time job. No me
permitirn tener un trabajo a tiempo parcial.
We were allowed to go home early. Nos dejaron
marcharnos temprano a casa.
Tambin se utiliza could para hablar de permiso en
general respecto al pasado.
You couldnt go out alone until you were 15. Hasta los
15 aos no podas salir sola.
Sin embargo, could no se utiliza para hablar de permiso
en un momento concreto del pasado. En ese caso se
debe emplear la forma be allowed to.
At sixteen, I was allowed to get a job on Saturdays.
A los diecisis aos me dejaron trabajar los sbados.

Los pronombres relativos se utilizan para aadir
una proposicin (la de relativo) a una oracin. Los
pronombres hacen referencia al sustantivo que precede
a la nueva proposicin.
Thats the man who plays the
Thats the man.
drums.
Ese es el hombre que toca la
Ese es el hombre.
batera.
Who y that se utilizan para referirse a las personas.
This is the woman who / that wrote that song. Esta
es la mujer que escribi esa cancin.
Tambin se puede utilizar whom, pero slo en un
registro muy formal y cuando la persona constituye el
objeto de la frase.
Thats the woman (whom) I asked. (muy formal)
Esa es la mujer a la que le plante la cuestin.
Thats the woman (who / that) I asked. (informal)
Esa es la mujer a la que se lo pregunt.
Which y that se refieren a objetos.
This is the CD (which / that) I bought. Este es el
CD que me compr.
This is the song (which / that) I like the most. Esta
es la cancin que ms me gusta.
When marca referencias temporales.
That was the time when we met them. Aquella fue la
ocasin en la que los conocimos.
Where hace referencia a espacios y lugares.
This is the house (where) he was born. Esta es la casa

The area where the band grew up is quite poor. La
zona en la que crecieron los msicos es bastante pobre.
Whose establece referencias de posesin y pertenencia.
Thats the band whose lead singer was arrested. Ese es

That se puede utilizar en lugar de who y which en las

Para pasar una oracin de la voz activa a la voz pasiva,
debemos seguir estos cinco pasos.
Voz activa: They have banned hoodies. Han prohibido
las sudaderas con capucha.
1 Identifica el objeto de la oracin activa: hoodies.
2 Colcalo al comienzo de la oracin, es decir, en
posicin de sujeto: Hoodies.
3 Fjate en el tiempo verbal de la oracin activa: have

Qu es una biografa?
En este tipo de textos se describe la vida y los logros de una persona. Si esa persona
an est viva, se hace referencia a los acontecimientos de su vida hasta ese momento.
Al final del texto puedes expresar tu opinin, bien acerca de lo que ha conseguido
hacer esa persona, o bien sobre lo que crees que conseguir en el futuro.
