7. For each of the following situations, identify a suitable wiring system, giving
one reason for your choice.
a. Overhead supply to machines in a factory. Machines may need to be relocated.
b. Connection between fixed controls and a motor mounted on slide rails.
c. Connections to terminals of a furnace.
c

Solution
a. Overhead busbar system, allows supplies to be instantly disconnected and
reconnected.
b. Flexible conduit or armoured cable. Allows for vibration and movement of motor.
c. High temperature connections such as porcelain sleeving, high temperature would
burn out high temperature rubber/pvc.
(3 x 2 marks, one mark only for naming cable or reason, two for both)

8. a. For each of the following earthing arrangements, state the item/position

that the earthing conductor is connected to at the opposite end to the main
earthing terminal.
e

i) TN-C-S
ii) TT
iii) TN-S
i

b. State the purpose of bonding.

b

Solution
a. i) Neutral at service head. (1 mark)
ii) Earth electrode (1 mark)
iii) Cable sheath (1 mark)
i

b. To create a zone of equal potential where all exposed metalwork is connected

together. This prevents the risk of shock between exposed and extraneous parts.

9. A three-phase 400v motor is supplied via an automatic stardelta starter fitted

with 400v hold in coils. If the line current of the motor at full load is 46
Ampere determine

a. the minimum size of single core pvc cables to be used installed in conduit
supplying the starter.
b. the minimum size of cables to be used supplying the motor from the starter in
flexible conduit.
Solution
a. Line current = 46A . From table 4D1A or 6D1, 10mm is rated at 50A (2 marks)
b. Phase current = 46 divided by 1.732 = 26.55A.
From 4D1A or 6D1, 4mm has current rating of 28A. (4 marks)

10. The characteristics of two motors are described as follows.

Motor A. The motor has a constant speed which only decreases slightly as the load
increases.
Motor B. When off load the speed of the motor is very high. As load is applied to
the motor the speed drops considerably.
a. Identify the characteristic type for both motors
b. Identify a.c motors which would provide the characteristics for A & B.
Solution
a. Motor A has a shunt characteristic. Motor B has a series characteristic. (2
marks)
b. any a.c motor except series universal. Series universal motor. (4 marks)

11. a. State the main reason for carrying out a periodic inspection.

b. Identify three events which may require a periodic inspection to be carried

out.

Solution
a. To prove that the installation is safe to use. (3 marks)
b. Change of use of building, expiry of previous certificate, legal requirement
etc.
(3 marks)

12. Apart from the IEE wiring regulations and On-site guide, identify three
relevant sources of information that would be of assistance during inspection and
testing.
Solution
