In the name of Allah, the most gracious and

merciful, Assalamualikum W.H and a very blessed morning I bid to our
honourable judges, the loyal time keeper, respective teachers, friends and
last but not least never to be forgotten my dear competitors.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Allow me to recite a simple poem by an unknown poet;
Heroes dont need to fly or shoot lasers from their eyes,
They dont need super-strength or super-speed to be there in
someones hour of need
They dont need a mask to save a family from certain woe
They just need to try to do what is right, to be the hero, shining in the
night.
This poem is my response to Who is hero? And which bring us to my topic:
Everyone is a hero. To be a hero, one does not need to have superpower
like Spiderman, Superman, Batman or Captain America. Everybody in the
world has a capability to be a hero including you and me.
Ladies and gentlemen,
According to Oxford Dictionary 7th Edition, a hero is defined as a person
who is admired by many people because of his bravery or good, or
because of a particular quality or skill. When I think of heroes I think of a
boy helping an old lady crossing the street or a fireman saving a pet from
burning houses. Heroes are found among the people we see every day.
Today, I would like to share with you my humble opinions on what makes a
man a hero. There are four characteristics of a hero which are
selflessness, loving, courage and role model.
Ladies and gentlemen,
The first characteristic of a hero is selflessness. A hero is always searching
for a way to lend hands and willing to put their own life at risk so that
another person might live to see another day. Our own Malaysian arm
forces that put their lives on the line to save Sabah from so called Sultan
Sulus intrusion exhibited this to perfection. Not only military, everyday
heroes like you and me can reach out to help someone who is in needs.
For instance, sharing our lunch with a friend because he didnt have one,
take a friend to the hospital in the middle of night or save someone from
drowning. Remember, ladies and gentlemen heroes always put aside
their personal interests for others benefits.

Ladies and gentlemen

In The Hobbit movie, the wizard Gandalf explains why he has selected a
small insignificant Hobbit like Bilbo to accompany the dwarves to fight the
ferocious enemy. Gandalf says, I found it is the small everyday deeds of
ordinary folk that keep darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love.
Ladies and gentlemen, what Gandalf has said brings us to our second
characteristic which is a hero has a heart of love and kindness. Acting out
kindness and loves can be any gesture, no matter how small or big the
action can make someones day. So there are many gestures that we can
do daily in other to be someones hero for instance visit a senior citizen
home and bring a gift, help someone with their groceries bag, helping an
old lady crossing the road, pay for someones coffee that is behind you in
line, or prepare a meal for a homeless person.
Ladies and gentlemen,
My third point would be a hero is courageous or brave. Researchers
suggest that heroic individuals are positive thinkers and have an ability to
overcome fear. A hero is able to look past the immediate danger of a
situation and see a more optimistic outcome. This reminds me one person
in my life, whom I considered as my hero. She is my aunty and she has
been battling cancer for about 5 years. She never complains. She never
use her sickness as an excuse of doing nothing all day and neglect her
children. In fact, she never give-up and everyone morning, my Mak Lang
will gather her strength to take on the world all over again. Whenever we
ask her How are you?, she just smile and tell us about all the good
things in her life. Mak Langs bravery continues to inspire me every day
and indeed she is my hero.
Last but not least, ladies and gentlemen, heroes are role models. A hero is
a person that everyone can look up to and admire them. When a hero is in
action it causes people to change their priorities. My friends, society might
think that we are the villains for all the mischievous that we have done in
the past. But, remember that a villain does not always remain as a villain.
We too can be heroes once we are out from these bars. How? By changing
our course. Prove to the society we can excel well in our academic and be
able to further our study to tertiary level. We must be good role models to
other underage inmates that theres a light at the end of the tunnel.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Do you have the courage and vision to be a hero? Being a hero does not
need fancy title, big money or mutant superpower, but one must be
selflessness, loving, courage and be a role model. And being a hero is not

something that you are chosen to be at birth but it is something that is

inside your heart. All you need is to put in effort and take charge the hero
side of us as the way you wish.
