ABSTRACT
Network planning and design is an iterative process, encompassing topological
design, network-synthesis, and network-realization, and is aimed at ensuring that a new
network or service meets the needs of the subscriber and operator. The process can be tailored
according to each new network or service.
A traditional network planning methodology involves five layers of planning, namely:
business planning
long-term and medium-term network planning
short-term network planning
IT asset sourcing
Operations and maintenance.
Each of these layers incorporates plans for different time horizons, i.e. the business planning
layer determines the planning that the operator must perform to ensure that the network will
perform as required for its intended life-span. The Operations and Maintenance layer,
however, examines how the network will run on a day-to-day basis.
The network planning process begins with the acquisition of external information. This
includes:
Forecasts of how the new network/service will operate;
The economic information concerning costs; and
The technical details of the networks capabilities.
It should be borne in mind that planning a new network/service involves implementing the
new system across the first four layers of the OSI Reference Model. This means that even
before the network planning process begins, choices must be made, involving protocols and
transmission technologies.
Once the initial decisions have been made, the network planning process involves three main
steps:
Topological design: This stage involves determining where to place the components
and how to connect them. The (topological) optimization methods that can be used in
this stage come from an area of mathematics called Graph Theory. These methods
involve determining the costs of transmission and the cost of switching, and thereby
determining the optimum connection matrix and location of switches and
concentrators.
Network-synthesis: This stage involves determining the size of the components used,
subject to performance criteria such as the Grade of Service (GoS). The method used
is known as "Nonlinear Optimization", and involves determining the topology,
required GoS, cost of transmission, etc., and using this information to calculate a
routing plan, and the size of the components.
This study will serve as a template in planning for reliable and flexible network
system for all the buildings and area of the school. Furthermore, it presents information on
the planning and engineering of local area networking.
Scope and Limitation
This study focuses on establishing a network system within the vicinity of Ilocos
Norte College of Arts and Trades. The network must be established on a wired and wireless
communication with a repeater to be use because of line losses. The network system is to be
done within Ilocos Norte College of Arts and Trades.

Product Overview
The Cisco SRW2024P 24-Port Gigabit Switch (Figure 1) allows you to expand your
network securely. Web-based configuration of the switch is secured using SSL. User access is
verified using 802.1X security with a RADIUS authentication mechanism and can also be
controlled using MAC-based filtering.
Extensive quality of service (QoS) features makes the solution ideal for real-time applications
such as voice and video. The four priority queues, together with the weighted round-robin
and strict priority scheduling techniques, facilitate efficient coexistence of real-time traffic
with data traffic, allowing each to meet its QoS needs. Individual users or applications can be
prioritized above others using various class of service options - by port, Layer 2 priority
(802.1p), and Layer 3 priority (type of service [ToS] or differentiated services code point
[DSCP[). Intelligent broadcast and multicast storm control minimize and contain the effect of
these types of traffic on regular traffic. Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP)
snooping limits bandwidth-intensive video traffic to only the requestors without flooding all
users. Incoming traffic can be policed and outgoing traffic can be shaped, allowing you to
control network access and traffic flow.
Other features of the Cisco SRW2024P allow you to expand and grow your network of
switches. Link aggregation allows multiple high-bandwidth trunks between switches to be set
up. This also provides reliability, in that the system continues to operate if one of the links
breaks. Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), Fast STP, and Rapid STP (RSTP) allow you to build a
mesh of switches, increasing the availability of the system.
The rich features of the WebView management software include Simple Network
Management Protocol (SNMP), Remote Monitoring (RMON), Telnet, and HTTP
management options, allowing you to flexibly integrate and manage these devices in your
network. Automatic load sensing in the power control circuitry automatically detects Power
over Ethernet (PoE) on the access point before providing power. Power feeding of Ethernet is
limited for fixed 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX ports. The switch can provide maximum output
power per PoE port up to 15.4W on 12 ports or 7.5W on 24 ports simultaneously. Each port
has independent overload and short-circuit protection, with LED indicators for power status.
The switch also supports EEE802.3af MIB for PoE, IEEE 802.1d STP, IEEE 802.1w RSTP,
Fast Linkover, and cable diagnostics.
Features
Automatic medium dependent interface (MDI) and MDI crossover (MDI-X) cable
detection
Port-based and 802.1Q-based VLANs support up to 256 VLANs-4096 range
Port trunking for up to 8 groups allows you to increase your bandwidth for each

***All distances are rounded to its nearest higher number***
From the New Administration building to Quadrangle measures a distance of
approximately 100 meters and therefore only one bridge/repeater is inserted after 85 meters
from the switch so that we can attain the minimal loss for data transmission. Also for the
buildings Practical Arts, Academic and Science, we must insert two bridge/repeaters so that
we can attain the minimal loss for data transmission. The path of the cable that we considered
to deploy is from the New Admin building through College building going direct to the Old
Admin and enters in the Quadrangle site, passes between Drafting building and RM building
and directs to the east part of the Practical Arts building and then to the Science building via
the ceiling hall way of the building. Each connected router/Wi-Fi from the server are required
to have an insertion of bridge/repeaters in every 85 95 meters to attain minimal loss for data
transmission.
For the buildings Old RTS, New RTS, ICT, and College with Old RTS Catwalk, the
path of the cable is deployed also via the College Building through ICT and Old RTS
Catwalk. And also, a bridge/repeater is inserted every 85 95 meters for the system to attain
a minimal loss for data transmission.
And for the Tech-Voc buildings, PCH building, Girls Trade building, FCM building,
FCM Annex, and MPCI Canteen, the path of the cable is deployed via the FCM building
through the MPCI Canteen and directs to the Northeast part of the Tech-Voc building, and
also a bridge/repeater is inserted for every 85 95 meters for the system to attain the minimal
loss for data transmission.
The network plan for Ilocos Norte College of Arts and Trades is a Star type Topology
which is when implemented, the school will be a near to a hundred percent of Wi-Fi
coverage. Therefore, in every corner inside the school, and in every part of it is Wi-Fi
accessed. In the case of network disconnection, it is easy to detect if one the wire going to the
router/Wi-Fi is disconnected. Also configuration of the network is done only by a certified
network administrator; hence the configuration of the network is a dynamic host
configuration protocol where according to the specifications of our equipments is supported
by our equipments. The budget for the network plan is quite expensive considering the cost of
each equipment and the length of unshielded twisted pair of cable that are going to be used.
But in contrary with the cost of the network plan, it is a near to a hundred percent of system
reliability and quality of the equipments are highly good.
Each Router/Wi-Fi will be installed on the ceiling of every building at the ground
floor, so that the equipment is secured and as a purpose also that in can covers the second
floor of the buildings that has a second floor. And for future expansion, a single Router/Wi-Fi
can accommodate up to four Router/Wi-Fi on it. Also a straight-through cable is used to each
of the Router/Wi-Fi from the server.
