Vroman delivers monster game as

Ramblers cap unbeaten regular season
by Chris Fiel

boyne City 55, Grayling 36

BOYNE CITY The
Boyne City football team
kept their perfect season
going and the first Northern Michigan Football
League I title, with a 55-36
victory over longtime
nemesis Grayling in the
regular season finale on October 24.
The win would not come
easy for the Ramblers, 9-0
overall, 6-0 NMFL I, as the
Vikings (winners of the last
five meetings) wasted little
time in getting on the scoreboard.
Grayling took their opening drive from their own 20yard line and behind the
strong running of Spencer
Kent, punched it in on a 1yard run just 44 seconds
into the contest and a 6-0
lead as the conversion attempt was no good.
Following a few four and
outs by the Ramblers and
stalled drives by the
Vikings thanks to a few big
Rambler defensive stands,
Boyne City was finally able
to break into the scoring
column as Mac Alexander
took a short screen pass
from the 15-yard line and
bulled his way into towards
the end zone, stretching the
ball over the goal line just
before he was brought
down.

A successful Dalton Gardner extra point gave the
Ramblers a 7-6 lead with
2:03 remaining in the first
quarter.
A long Boyne City drive
to start the second quarter
would come to an end at the
Grayling 12 yard line as a

mask ripped o by a Grayling defender during Boynes 55-36
win. (Photo by Cinda Shumaker)

Max Cuper pass would be

picked off and returned to
the Viking 45.
The Ramblers would then
pick up a few uncharacteristic penalties and the
Vikings would find themselves in the red zone. A
Scout Tobin run to the 1yard line, followed by a
Boyne City defensive push
on second down would
leave Grayling at the 5-yard
line. One play later and
Kent would blast his way in
for the second Viking score
of the contest with 8:27 to
go in the half. A failed conversion attempt and
Grayling would lead 12-7.
Grayling would use an
onside kickoff, (something
they would attempt on
nearly every chance they
had to boot the ball) but
Boyne City would recover,
giving them the ball near
midfield.
Rambler senior Maceo
Vroman would stretch the
field on an end around the
left side and wiggle his way
to the Viking 26. A few
plays later and Vroman

would take it up the middle

for a 9-yard score and a 1412 BC lead after Gardner
booted the extra point with
just over five minutes remaining in the half.
Grayling would then turn
to Kent once again and the
running back would deliver
his third score of the game,
pushing the Vikings back
in front 20-14, following a
successful conversion attempt with 3:33 to play in
the quarter.
A strong Boyne drive
would result in a Malik
Smith 5-yard run one
minute later for a 21-20
Rambler lead.
With seconds to play in
the half, Boyne would once
again take over at midfield
and handoff to Vroman
who would scoot to the left
sideline and dance his way
through Viking defenders
before turning on the jets
and crossing into the end
zone on a 52-yard touchdown run with no time on
the clock and a 28-20 lead at
the break.
Following intermission,

the Ramblers would fumble

the ball on their first play to
start the half and the
Vikings would run it back
to the BC 24 yard line and
capitalize on the Rambler
miscue as Tobin scored on a
short run just under a
minute and a half into the
third quarter. A successful
conversion attempt and the
game was knotted at 28-all.
Thats as close as the
Vikings would get to regaining the lead as Boyne
picked up touchdowns from
Luke Sage, another two
from Vroman and an over
the top leaping score from
Smith to close out the contest.
Vroman would lead the
Ramblers with four touchdowns, tallying 259 yards on
18 attempts, while Smith
added 94 yards, two scores
on 23 carries.
Cuper tossed touchdown
passes of 15 and eight yards
to Alexander and Sage.
Defensively for Boyne
Alexander led the way with
16 stops, while Lee Rainey
recovered two fumbles.

Charlevoix rolls past Rams with second half surge

by Chris Fiel

Charlevoix 61,
harbor Springs 0
CHARLEVOIX Its been a
while since the Rayder faithful
have had the opportunity to see
their team in the playoffs.
Five years exactly, and the current Rayder roster would leave no
doubt that they wanted to be the
team that ended that drought as
they would steamroll the visiting
Rams 61-0 in the regular season
final for both squads on October
24.
Charlevoix, 6-3 overall, 4-1
NMFL II, used a strong second
half of the season behind a very
strong running attack and solid
defense that limited opponents to
six points over a four game
stretch after starting the year 2-3.
The kids played well and they
stuck to their assignments, Rayder coach Ron Bindi said. We
knew we wanted in the playoffs
and wanted that sixth win to assure our spot.
The contest would start out
slow for both teams before Rayder signal caller Nate Moon
would find paydirt on an 11-yard
keeper closing out the first quarter. A successful conversion attempt and Charlevoix led 8-0.
The second quarter would be a
different story for both teams as
Charlevoix took advantage of the
big play and pushed their one

VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP
Rayders take
third place at
Leland Tourney
LELAND The Charlevoix
volleyball team took part in a
very competitive Leland Volleyball tournament, featuring
the host team and Lake Michigan Conference rival Traverse
City St. Francis on October 25.
In pool play the Rayder defeated Frankfort 25-11, 25-15
and Northport 25-14, 25-16, setting up their first big match of
the day with TCSF. Both sets
would feature outstanding action, with neither team able to
pull away and no clear winner
until the final two points of
each set. The Gladiators took
the opener 25-22 and the Rayders rebounded with a 27-25
win in set two.
As a team we walked away
content and proud of our play,
the only downside was it left
us with a one point differential to give TCSF first place for
the pool play and the Rayders
second, Charlevoix coach
Audra Randall said. The girls
really had a great day and as a
coach I saw some exceptional
focus, hunger and poise in
their play today.
Charlevoix downed Bellaire
in the quarterfinals 25-17, 2517, setting up a meeting up
with Leland. The host team
would defeat the Rayders 2520, 25-11.
Senior Madeline Boss led
the team with 66 kills, 37 digs,
finished 40-of-44 on serve receive, four aces and added six
blocks. Senior setter Olivia
Storm, had 98 assists, 20 digs
and served at 100 percent on
the day.
Alexis Tribfelner finished
with a team high 50 digs, was
31-of-34 on serve receive and
added seven aces, while Gloria

nect with wide out Will Telgenhof

for a 22-yard touchdown strike.
Ben Boss would add a 46-yard

scoring run and tight end Austin

Putman took a handoff 15 yards
for another score.
The kids are starting to get
more comfortable offensively,
Bindi said. The game was pretty
even as far as number of offensive plays, we just happened to
score on a few big plays.
Charlevoix wasnt done yet as
Forrest Noirot tacked on a 14yard run in the third, before
sophomore Malcolm Williams
added a 21-yarder in the fourth.
Truman Left got in on the scoring action as he picked off a Harbor pass and returned it for a
touchdown, putting an exclamation point on the evening.Offensively for the Rayders, Moon
finished 4-of-9 passing for 80
yards and a touchdown, while
adding 52 yards and two scores
on the ground. Williams added 83
yards rushing on eight attempts,
while Boss carried seven times
for 72 yards and Forrest Noirot
added 50 yards on five carries.
We had four guys average over
10 yards per carry tonight, Bindi
noted. We also outgained out opponent 390 yards to 52, so the defense is doing their job and
sticking to their assignments.
Defensively, Justin Adkins and
Putman recorded six tackles
each. Moon and Bryan Noirot
had interceptions.
The Rayders will play host Negaunee (5-4) at 7 p.m. at Kipke
Field on Friday, October 31.

Some coaches from across the
country and locally have participated in this same workshop and
have had the following to say:
I always seek at least one tool
from a session that I can add to
my arsenal and use on a regular
basis to help me be a better coach.
You couldnt imagine the beaming
smiles I got last weekend when I
said Mistakes are OK, thats one
way we learn to have more confidence.
It helped me as I think I need
more things written down and

Consequences.
I have attended PCA workshops on 3 separate occasions.

Every workshop I learned something new. I feel the program is

Real Estate Corner

Question & Answers About Selling Real Estate

Do You Have Buyers Paralysis?

Part 1 of 3

Compliments of mike Stark,

Coldwell banker Schmidt realtors
east Jordan. (231) 536-7700

Youve looked at dozens of homes.

Your REALTOR is about to tear his
hair out with frustration. You are
paralyzed, letting one great home
after another pass you by. Why cant
you make a decision?
Buying a home can be an overwhelming process. There are so
many decisions to make and any of
them can mean serious financial consequences. A home, after all, is
hardly a liquid asset. Nor is it a
growth investment, according to Wall
Street definitions. Its your greatest
financial debt, even while it puts a
roof over your head. As it appreciates, it also needs repairs and maintenance. With all that weighing on you,
no wonder youve got commitment
phobia.
Yet, you really want to buy a home.
You know that few purchases will
provide you the quality of life that a
home of your own does. There are
plenty of advantages, as well - tax
breaks, rising real estate values, a

stable environment for the family, to

name only a few. So you stifle your
worries and keep looking for homes.
You just cant find the one thats just
right for you.
It might be time to back this train
up and examine what is causing the
conflict between wanting to buy and
being unable to make a decision.
There is a cause, and its name is
money. The question is, which aspect
of money is stopping you from moving forward?
Fear of spending too much
Lenders will loan you money at the
top of your ability to borrow. Realtors will suggest that you will be happier in a bigger, better home,
eliminating the need to trade up in
a few years. Stretching to buy the
most home you can possibly afford is
a good strategy, but only under certain conditions - that you have confidence that your salary will rise, that
your income is stable, and that you
can handle large surprise expenses.
If youve been pre-qualified, you
are already looking at bigger, better,

more beautiful homes at the top of

your range. But something isnt quite
right. Even though you may feel that
your income is stable, a feeling is
telling you that if you buy in this
range, you wont have enough in reserves should something happen.
Those are your instincts talking, and
you should listen, because your desires have been doing the talking up
to now. Your instincts are telling your
desires to scale back a little.
That means backtracking. Talk to
your Realtor and ask her to show you
less expensive homes. You cant go
wrong buying slightly under your
ability. In fact, many financial advisors tell their clients to budget about
25% of their income for housing in
order to position them to build reserves for savings, investments, home
improvements, emergencies and
dozens of other reasons. Thats almost six percent less than lenders
will allow you to borrow. Just think
what else you can do with six percent
of your income. Youll still have your
house, youll just have more to do
other things with.

The BCS Bowl computers

are shut down and the power
has been handed over to a
committee for the all new College Football Playoff Selection.
The 13 members were unanimously chosen by the College
Football Playoff Management
Committee, the commissioners of the conferences overseeing the new playoff. The
playoff will begin at the end
of the 2014 season.
In aggregate, the selection
committee members have
roughly 230 years of experience in college football. The
group includes 10 people who
played college football, two
former top-level university
administrators, five current
athletics directors, three
members of the College Football Hall of Fame, three former college football head
coaches, a former United
States Secretary of State, a
former member of Congress,
and a retired three-star general.
In addition, the group includes a Rhodes Scholar, two
Academic All-Americans,
three Phi Beta Kappa graduates, and a retired journalist
who won numerous awards as
a reporter. Collectively the
group has 26 degrees of
higher learning, including
eight masters degrees, two
law degrees, and two doctoral
degrees.

The members of the selection committee are:

Jeff Long, vice chancellor
and director of athletics, University of Arkansas-Fayetteville, Chair

United States Secretary of

State
Mike Tranghese, former
commissioner of the Big East
Conference

Barry Alvarez, director of

athletics, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Steve Wieberg, former college football reporter, USA

Today

Lieutenant General Mike

Gould, former superintendent
of the United States Air Force
Academy

Tyrone Willingham, former

head coach of three FBS institutions

Pat Haden, director of athletics, University of Southern

California
Tom Jernstedt, former
NCAA executive vice president
Oliver Luck, director of athletics, West Virginia University
Archie Manning, former
University of Mississippi
quarterback and all-pro NFL
quarterback
Tom Osborne, former head
coach and director of athletics, University of NebraskaLincoln
Dan Radakovich, director of
athletics, Clemson University

Team-Selection Method:
Unlike the BCS, which uses
a formula based on a combination of computer rankings
and human polls to select
teams, selection committee
members for the new playoff
will have flexibility to examine whatever data they believe
is relevant to inform their decisions. Among the many factors the committee will
consider are win-loss record,
strength of schedule, head-tohead results, and conference
championships won.
Tuesday night, the selection
committee announced their
first set of rankings (see list
below) of the top 25 teams in
college football announced
October 28, 2014.
