Element Refinement in Automesh Panel

Topic details:
During FE-modeling of a part sometimes it is necessary to have a concentrated or fine mesh on
certain regions and coarse mesh on other regions. This kind of mesh is a standard for a few
analyses and it helps reduce the computational time to a great extent in others.
Refine option is accessed through a subpanel that is saved to the surface deviation subpanel,
and allows you to select fixed points, lines, or surfaces to define an area in which you desire a
more refined mesh
You can specify a different element size for these areas, which is displayed as a color-coded
numeric value: yellow for points, green for lines, or red for surfaces
Note: This functionality works only for shell elements.

1. Obtain the initial unrefined mesh by loading the Box.hm file.

Below model shows a mesh generated with no refinement applied for element size

No refinement applied (element size 5)

2. Go to 2D Page
3. Click on automesh panel

4. Select surface deviation sub-panel

5. Click on refine option

Create a mesh using point refinement option

1) Set the refinement option to points and select points to which refinement needs to be
assigned through the entity selector points.
2) Specify a different element size for these areas, which is displayed as a color-coded
numeric value i.e. yellow for points.

3) Click on assign to assign the value to the selected points as shown below.

Color-coded numeric value (yellow for points)

4) Once the selected points are assigned the refinement value, click return.

5) Specify the surfaces for meshing and refinement options (in this case please select all
the surfaces that touch the refinement point selected)
6) Click mesh.

This causes the meshing engine to create a smoothly-scaled mesh from your base element size
to the size specified in the refine options as shown below.

Create a mesh using line refinement option

1) Set the refinement option to lines and select a line to which refinement needs to be
assigned through the entity selector lines.
2) Specify a different element size for these areas, which is displayed as a color-coded
numeric value i.e. green for lines.
3) Click on assign to assign the value to the selected lines as shown below.

Color-coded numeric value (green for lines)

4) Once the selected lines are assigned the refinement value, click return.
5) Specify the surfaces for meshing and refinement options (in this case please select all
the surfaces that touch the refinement line selected)
6) Click mesh.

Line refinement (refinement size 1)

Create a mesh using surface refinement option
1) Set refinement option to surfs and select the surfaces to which the refinement needs to
be assigned through the entity selector surfs.
2) Specify a different element size for these areas, which is displayed as a color-coded
numeric value i.e. red for surfaces.
3) Click on assign to assign the value to the selected surfaces as shown below.

Color-coded numeric value (red for surfaces)

4) Once the selected surfaces are assigned the refinement value, click return.
5) After specifying the surfaces for meshing and refinement options.
6) Click mesh.
