Natural Carmine

Carmine is the Word used to describe the aluminium

chelate of carminic acid. Carminic acid is the colour
extracted form the dried female coccid insect Dactylopius coccus costa. The word cochineal is used to
describe both the dried insects themselves and also
the colour derived from them.
Coccid insect of many species have been used for
thousands of years as a source of red colour. Each insect is associated with a specific host plant and each
es the source of a particular colour such as Armenian
red, kermes, Polish cochineal, lac dye and American
cochineal. The Spanish conquest of American cochineal is the only cochineal. The Spanish conquest of
Central and South America brought the latter product to Europe and now American cochineal is the only
cochineal of commercial importance, although Lac
dye (from Laccifera lacca) is available in the Far East.
The current principal source of cochineal insects is
Mexico, Chile and Peru, although these insects are
also available in the Canary Islands where they live on
various species of cacti (principally Nopalea cochenillefera). About 300 tonnes of dried cochineal are
produced annually, all of which is used to produce colour, principally carmine. A significant proportion of the
carmine produced is actually used in the cosmetics
industry.
At Farbe we have our own cacti fields from which we
collect all the coccid we need to all our red range of
natural colours.
