a) A steel wire 2m long and 3mm in diameter is extended by 0.75 mm when a weight w
is suspended from the wire. If the same weight is suspended from a brass wire, 2.5m long and 2
mm in diameter, it is elongated by 4.64 mm. Determine the modulus of elasticity of brass if that
of steel be 2 105 N/mm2.
b) A Concrete column of cross-Sectional area 400mm 400mm is rein forced by four
longitudinal 50mm diameter round steel bars placed at each corner. If the column carries
a compressive load of 300kN, determine
i) The compressive stress produced in the concrete and steel bars
ii) Loads carried Youngs Modulus of elasticity of steel is 15 times that of concrete.
a) Draw the SF and BM diagrams for the cantilever loaded as shown in the figure.

b) Draw the SF and BM diagrams for the simply supported beam shown in the figure.

a) A 250 mm (depth) 150 mm (width) rectangular beam is subjected to a maximum bending


moment of 750 kN-m.
Determine
i) The maximum stress in the beam
ii) If the value of the E for the beam material is 200 GN/m2, find out the radius of
curvature for that portion of the beam where the bending is maximum.
iii) The value of the longitudinal stress at a distance of 65mm from the top surface of the
beam.

b) A symmetrical section 200mm deep has a moment of inertia 2.26 10-5 m4 about its neutral
axis. Determine the longest span over which, when simply supported, the beam would carry a
uniformly distributed load of 4kN/m run without the stress due to bending exceeding 25MN/m2.
c) A hollow circular bar having outside diameter twice the inside diameter is used as a beam.
From the bending moment diagram, it is found that the bar is found that the bar is subject to a
bending moment of 40kNm. If the allowable bending stress in the beam is to be limited to
100MN/m2, find the inside diameter of the bar.

a) A timber beam 150mm 250mm is simply supported at its ends and has a span of 3.5m. The
maximum safe allowable stress in bending is 7500kN/ m2. Find the maximum safe UDL, which
the bean can carry? What is the maximum shear stress in the beam for the UDL calculated?.
b) A Simply supported beam carries a UDL of intensity 2.5kN/m over entire span of 5m. The
cross section of the beam is a T Section having the dimensions as shown in the figure.
Calculate the maximum shear stress for the section of the beam.

5.

A Cantilever truss of 3m span is loaded as shown in the figure. Find the forces in various
members of the framed truss and tabulate the results. Employ the method of joints as well as
method of sections.

a) A Cantilever 1.5m long carries a uniformly distributed load over the entire length. Find the
deflection at the free end if the slope at free end is 1.50.
b) A Cantilever 3metres length and of uniform rectangular cross section 150mm wide and
300mm deep is loaded with a 30 KN load at its free end. In addition to this, it carries a
uniformly distributed load of 20 KN per meter run over its entire length.
Calculate
i) Maximum slope of Maximum deflection
ii) The slope and deflection at 2 meters from fixed end. Take E = 210 GN/m2.

a) Calculate the thickness of metal required for a cast iron main 800mm in diameter for water at
a pressure head of 100m, if the maximum permissible tensile stress is 20 MN/ m2 and weight of
water is 10 kN/ m3.
b) A Cylindrical vessel whose ends are closed by means of rigid flange plates is made of steel
plate 3mm thick. The internal length and diameter of the vessel are 50cm and 25cm
respectively. Determine the longitudinal and circumferential stresses in the cylindrical shell due
to an internal fluid pressure of 3MN/ m2. Also calculate the increase in length, diameter and

a) Calculate the thickness of metal necessary for a cylindrical shell of internal diameter 160 mm
to withstand an internal pressure of 25 MN/ m2 , if the maximum permissible tensile stress is

b) A bronze linear of 60mm external diameter is to be shrunk on a steel rod of 48mm diameter.
If the maximum stress in the linear is limited to 144 MN/ m2 .
Calculate
i) Maximum radial pressure between the linear and rod
ii) Difference between the linear bore and shaft diameter before shrinking. Take Youngs
Modulus for steel and bronze to be 200 GN/ m2 and 90 GN/ m2 respectively, poisons ratio
for both steel and bronze = 0.3.

b) i) Calculate the dimensions of strongest section that can be cut out of a circular log of wood
of 25 cm in diameter
ii) Also specify the safe maximum span for the beam of rectangular section when it is to carry as
uniformly distributed load of 2.5 kN per meter and the bending stresses are limited to 10MN/m2
iii) What will be the longest span if the circular log itself is used as a beam?

a) A girder of uniform section and constant depth is freely supported over a span of 3 meters. If
the point load at mid span is 30 KN and Ixx = 15.614 10-6 m4, calculate
i) The central deflection
ii) The slopes at the ends of the beam. Take E = 200 GN/m2.
b) A steel girder of uniform section, 14m long is simply supported at its ends. It carries
concentrated loads of 90 kN and 60 kN at two points 3 meters and 4.5 meters from the two ends
respectively. Calculate
i) Deflection of the girder at the points under the two loads
ii) The maximum deflection. Take I = 64 10-4 m4 and E = 210 10-6 kN/ m2.

a) A cylindrical air drum is 2.25m in diameter with plates 1.2cm thick. The efficiencies of the
longitudinal and circumferential joints are 75% and 40% respectively. If the tensile stress in the
plating is limited to 120 MN/ m2, find the maximum safe air pressure.
b) A cylindrical shell 3m long which is closed at the ends has an internal diameter of 1m and a
wall thickness of 15mm. Calculate the circumferential and longitudinal stresses of the shell if it
is subjected to an internal pressure of 1.5 MN/ m2.

a) A steel cylinder of 1000mm inside diameter is to be designed for an internal pressure of
4.8 MN/m2.
Calculate i) The thickness if the maximum shearing stress is not to exceed 21 MN/m2
ii) The increase in volume, due to working pressure, if the cylinder is 7m long with closed ends .
Neglect any constraints due to ends. Take E = 200 GN/m2, Poissons ratio = 1/3.
b) To measure the longitudinal and circumferential strains, strain gages were fixed on the outer
surface of a closed thick cylinder of diameter ratio 2.5. At an internal pressure of 276 MN/m2,
these strains were recorded as 11.016 10-5 and 44.28 10-5 respectively.
Determine i) Youngs Modulus and ii) Modulus of rigidity.

a) A steel rod ABC is firmly held between two rigid supports A and C as shown in the
figure. Find the Stresses developed in the two portions of the rod, when it is heated through
15K.
Take = 12 10-6 / K and E=200GPa

b) A Uniform metal bar has a cross sectional area of 7cm2 and a length of 1.5m. With an elastic
limit of 160 MN/ m2, what will be its proof resilience? Determine also the maximum value of an
applied load which may be suddenly applied without exceeding the elastic limit.
Calculate the value of gradually applied load which will produce the same extension as that
produced by the suddenly applied load above. Take youngs Modulus as 200 GN/ m2.

a) Draw the SF and BM diagrams for the beam loaded as shown in the figure and find the point
of contra flexure if any

b) A simply supported beam 6m long is carrying uniformly distributed load of 5 kN/m over a
length of 3m from the right end. Draw the S.F and BM diagram for the beam and also calculates
the maximum BM on the section.

a) A cast Iron water main 12m long of 500mm inside diameter and 25mm wall thickness runs
full of water and is supported at its ends. Calculate the maximum stress in the metal if density of
cast iron is 7200 Kg/m3 and that of water is 1000 Kg/ m3
b) A Cantilever beam is rectangular in section having 80mm width and 120mm depth. If the
cantilever is subjected to a point load of 6 kN at the free end and the bending stress is not to
exceed 40MPa, find the span of the cantilever beam.
c) A rectangular beam 60mm wide and 150mm deep is simply supported over a span of 4m. If
the beam I subjected to uniformly distributed load of 4.5 KN/m, find the maximum bending
stress induced in the beam.
A cast iron bracket subjected to bending, has a cross section of I shape with unequal flanges as
shown in the figure. If the compressive stress in the top flange is not to exceed 17.5MPa, what is
the bending moment the section can take? If the section is subjected to a shear force of 100 kN,
draw the shear stress distribution over the depth of the section.

The following figure shows an inclined truss loaded as shown. Determine the forces in the
members of the truss by methods of joints.

A simply supported beam 5m long carries concentrated loads of 10 kN each at points 1m from
the ends. Calculate
i) Maximum slope and deflection of the beam.
ii) Slope and deflection under each load. Take E I = 1.2104 kN-m2.

a) Calculate the increase in volume of a spherical shell 1m in diameter and 1m thick when it is
subjected to an internal pressure of 1.6 MN/m2.

A compound cylinder formed by shrinking one tube to another is subjected to an internal


pressure of 90 MN/m2. Before the fluid is admitted, the internal and external diameters of the
compound cylinder are 180mm and 300mm respectively and the diameters at the junction is
240mm. If after shrinking on, the radial pressure at the common surface is 12 MN/m2, determine
the final stresses developed in the compound cylinder.

100 KN at B and C as shown in the figure. Find the loads shared by each part of the bar and

b) The following figure shows a loaded beam. Sketch the SF and BM diagrams giving the
important numerical values calculate the maximum bending moment and the point at which it
occurs.

3. A beam simply supported at its ends and having cross sections, as shown in the figure, is loaded
with uniformly distributed load (UDL) over whole of its span. If the beam is 8m long, find the
UDL if the maximum permissible bending stress in tension is limited to 30MN/m2. What are the
actual maximum bending stresses set up in the section?

4.

a) A beam of square section is used as a beam with one diagonal horizontal. Find the maximum
shear stress in the cross section of the beam. Also sketch the shear stress distribution across the
depth of the section.
b) A rolled steel joist 200mm 160mm wide has a flange 22mm thick and web 12mm thick.
Find the proportion in which the flanges and web resist shear force?

determine.
i) Maximum permissible diameter of the shell for an internal pressure of 2 MN/ m2.
ii) Permissible intensity of internal pressure when the shell diameter is 1.5m
b) A steel tube having a bore of 150mm, wall thickness 2.25mm is plugged at each end to form
a closed cylinder with an external length of 450mm. I f the tube is filled with oil and is
subjected to a compressive load of 90 KN, determine
i) The pressure produced on oil
ii) The resulting circumferential stress in the tube wall
Given; for oil Bulk Modulus (K) = 2800 MN/m2
For steel, E = 210 GN/ m2 and Poissons ratio = 0.28.

8.

An external pressure of 10 MN/ m2 is applied to a thick cylinder of internal diameter 150mm


and external diameter 300mm. If the maximum hoop stress permitted on the inside wall is 35
MN/ m2, Calculate
i) The maximum internal pressure that can be applied
ii) The change in outside diameter if the cylinder has the closed ends
