Installation Guide Multiflash for Windows

Installation

Introduction
This chapter contains information that will help you install and run
Multiflash on a Windows system. Note that you may need to be
logged on as an Administrator to carry out the installation.

System requirements

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP or more recent.

Excel 97 or later is needed to export graphics to Excel.

A Pentium-class processor.

CD-ROM drive.

The files supplied require about 30Mb of free disk space.

The software protection device requires a USB port or a parallel

port.

A port driver is required to communicate with the software

protection device, in the case of USB dongle. See Installing the
USB protection device drivers on page 4.

From Multiflash 3.9.13 onwards, Multiflash is also issued with

a software licensing system that uses license files. The
software licensing system developed by Reprise Software is
called RLM (Reprise License Manager). See Installing the RLM
software protection system on page 3.

The help system requires Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5

or higher.

The .NET Framework version 3.5 SP1 or higher.

Installing Multiflash
To install Multiflash on your computer run the Setup program (see
below). Setup installs Multiflash itself, the HELP system, Infochem
databanks and sample problem setup files. The new RLM license
server and the Infochem License Manager can also be installed.
Multiflash 4.0 uses .NET technology to display the user interface.
The installer will automatically install the correct version of the

Installation Guide Multiflash for Windows

Installation 1

.NET framework. If you are not installing Multiflash from the CDROM, the installer will need to download the .NET installer from
the internet.
If you do not have internet connection, you can always download it
in another computer from the following website:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/0/e/20e90413-712f438c-988e-fdaa79a8ac3d/dotnetfx35.exe
and do an offline installation in the computer where Multiflash is
going to run.
In addition optional interfaces for Excel and CAPE-OPEN may also
be installed. Different versions of Multiflash can co-exist on your
computer but they should be installed in different directories.
To run the Setup program from CD-ROM:
1. Insert the CD in your CD-ROM drive.
2. It should launch the installation automatically if your operating
system has auto-run CD enabled. Then follow the instructions
on your screen.
3. If your operating system does not have auto-run CD enabled:

Choose Run from the Start button.

In the Open box type

d:\setup
(if your CD-ROM drive is not drive d: use the
appropriate drive letter)

4. Click on the OK button. When Setup starts follow the

instructions on your screen.
5. You will be prompted to enter the path to the directory where
you want to install Multiflash. The default directory is
C:\Program Files\Infochem\MF40. If you have a previous
version of Multiflash already installed it is strongly
recommended that you install Version 4.0 in a separate
directory.
6. You are offered a choice of 3 types of installation.
Typical: installs both the Multiflash program and the Excel
interface.
Custom: allows you to choose Multiflash, the Excel
interface or the CAPE-OPEN interface, RLM license server,
UniSim Design or Hysys Upstream support.
Minimal: installs only the Multiflash program.
7. Setup will add a new item for Multiflash 4.0 to the Programs
Menu on the Start button and will place a shortcut on the
desktop.
A list of the files that are copied to your computer can be found in
the file FILELIST.TXT in the installation directory.
After the installation Multiflash 4.0 entry should be added in the
Windows Programs menu that looks like as follows.

For users with the USB/Parallel dongles as the license control

device, the Sentinel Software Protection software should be
installed including setting the PATH and environment variables if
necessary as described in Installing the USB protection device
drivers on page 4.

Installing the RLM software protection system

From Multiflash 3.9.13 onwards, Multiflash is also issued with a
software licensing system that uses license files. The software
licensing system developed by Reprise Software is called RLM
(Reprise License Manager).
NOTE:

If you are currently using the Multiflash USB dongle you should not
install the RLM software as it is not necessary.
Infochem has also developed software to make the licensing
system easy to manage. This is the Multiflash license manager

Installation Guide Multiflash for Windows

Installation 3

which can be used to configure RLM or to switch the license

control to the USB dongle.
The RLM server is installed by default but can be de-selected when
the custom installation option is selected during the installation.
The Multiflash license manager is always installed with Multiflash.
More information on how to run and use the program is described
in the section RLM license system installation and management
on page 17.

Installing the USB protection device drivers

If you were issued a Multiflash RLM license file you do not need to
install the drivers for the USB dongle.
Multiflash requires a valid license to be available when it runs. The
license is provided by software that interfaces with a hardware key.
The key must be present in a USB port or parallel port of your PC
or a PC on your network (for network licenses) when the program
is running. Simply insert the key into the port, making sure that a
secure connection is made. On the parallel port key the direction of
connection to the computer is shown by the arrows on the key.
You can still use a printer or other device that is usually connected
to a parallel port by plugging it into the back of the key.
The server and driver for the hardware key are required to enable
the security device to function. The port driver and server software
and installation instructions (README.TXT) are supplied on the
CD-ROM in the \Sentinel\Installer directory. To install the port
driver and license server run SentinelProtectionInstaller7.6.3.exe
and follow the instructions. More information about the server
and driver installation is provided in the section Sentinel system
driver and server installation for dongles on page 26.

Setting the PATH

This operation is done automatically by the Multiflash installer.
These instructions are given here for reference in case you need to
set them up again.
The directory where the Multiflash DLL file MFL4032.dll is installed
must be accessible to all programs that use the dll. This includes
the Multiflash GUI interactive program and, optionally, Excel,
MATLAB and the CAPE-OPEN interface. By default the dll is
automatically loaded by the interfaces except Matlab. For the
Matlab interface to work correctly, the installation directory has to
be added to the PATH environment variable.
To set the path for Windows use Control Panel and click on
System. Select the Advanced tab and the Environment button. In
the User variables section click on PATH and then Edit to add to
existing settings or click on the New button to create a new user
PATH variable. Set the PATH user variable with the Multiflash
installation directory, typically C:\Program Files\Infochem\MF40.

4 Installation

Installation Guide Multiflash for Windows

Databank path
Multiflash needs to use a number of data files which are listed
below:
infodata.bin
infodata.idx
mflash.msg
mflash.mix
mflash.err
mflash.eix
dippr.bin
dippr.idx
infobips.bin
infollbips.bin

databank for fluid components

index for above
displays for Multiflash GUI
index for above
error message file
index for above
DIPPR databank (only if licensed))
index for above (only if licensed)
BIP databank (VLE)
BIP databank (LLE)

These files are normally installed in the same directory as the

Multiflash program. You can change the location where Multiflash
looks for these files using the Tools/Preferences menu item in the
Multiflash GUI. It displays the following dialog box

The entry for Databank and Help Files is used to set the databank
path.

The MFCONFIG.DAT configuration file

The file MFCONFIG.DAT may be used to configure some aspects of
the way that the Multiflash GUI behaves. The file may contain
Multiflash command language (as defined in the Multiflash
Command Reference manual). You do not need to use an
MFCONFIG.DAT file.

Installation Guide Multiflash for Windows

Installation 5

When Multiflash runs it searches for the MFCONFIG.DAT file in the

same directory specified in the Problem Files entry on the
Tools/preferences dialog as shown above.

The Multiflash log file

All outputs from Multiflash that are displayed in the main output
window are also written to a file called MFLASH.LOG. The directory
where this log file is written is displayed when Multiflash is
started. The log file is written to the same directory as used for the
MFCONFIG.DAT file (see above). It is important that this directory
actually exists otherwise the log file cannot be opened. You must
also ensure that you have write permission for the directory. This
is not usually a problem on a stand-alone PC but may be an issue
on networked computers.
A history of log files is kept by rotating the log files. Multiflash
always writes to mflash.log and the history log files names are
from mflash_1.log to mflash_10.log, the latter the older log file. A
history of 10 log files is kept.

Running Multiflash
After following the steps described above you should check that
Multiflash runs correctly. To start Multiflash double-click on the
Multiflash 4.0 shortcut on your desktop or click on the Start
button, select Multiflash 4.0 in the Programs Menu and click on the
Multiflash 4.0 for Windows item.
The setup program creates a shortcut to Multiflash 4.0 on the
desktop. If the shortcut gets removed you can recreate it as
follows:
1. Start Windows Explorer.
2. Locate the program file MFW4032.exe in the directory where
you installed Multiflash.
3. Select MFW4032.exe and from the File menu choose Create
Shortcut.
Drag the shortcut item from the Explorer window onto the
Desktop and rename it if required.

Multiflash Excel interface

The Multiflash version 4.0 Excel add-in is compatible with Excel
2010, 2007, 2003, XP, 2000 and Excel 97. For information on how
to install the add-in see the User Guide for Multiflash Excel
Interface.

Installation Guide Multiflash for Windows

Multiflash MATLAB interface

The installation program for the MATLAB interface is on the
Multiflash CD in the \API\MATLAB folder.

Removing Multiflash from your computer

To uninstall Multiflash:
1. If the Excel add-in is installed remove it as described in User
Guide for Multiflash Excel Interface.
2. In Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
3. Scroll down the list of programs to Multiflash 4.0 and select it.
4. Click on Add/Remove and when asked to confirm the deletion
click on Yes if you wish to go ahead. You may be asked to
confirm that you wish to delete certain shared system files (.dll
or .ocx). It is only safe to delete system files if all installed
programs correctly follow the Microsoft installation guidelines.
If in doubt do not delete system files. You may safely delete
MFL4032.dll if you wish to uninstall Multiflash.
5. Information is stored in the Windows Registry under the key:
\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Infochem\Multiflash\Version 4.0
The uninstall procedure will remove any subkeys set at installation
but the list of recently used files, default units etc. will not be
removed. You may remove these keys but you should only attempt
to do so if you are sure that you are competent to do it and
understand the consequences of getting it wrong.

Installation Troubleshooting
This section discusses some problems that you might encounter
and provides guidelines for dealing with them.

Starting the program

1. The program starts but one of the following message boxes
appears

The dynamic link library MFL4032.dll for the Multiflash

software cannot be found. You should check that you have a
file MFL4032.dll in the installation directory or in a directory
that is on the path. By default the Multiflash DLL, MFL4032.dll
is installed in the installation directory. See the section Setting
the PATH on page 4. This error may also be produced if one or
more dlls required by MFL4032.dll cannot be found.

Installation Guide Multiflash for Windows

Installation 7

The dynamic link library MFL4032.dll could not be read or

accessed correctly. It is possible that the DLL has been
corrupted by a software error or it has been inadvertently
changed by a program like a text editor. You should try to
reinstall the software.
2. The program starts and displays a message box similar to the
following:

This means that one or more files (named in the message box)
required to run Multiflash could not be found. You can click
the Yes button to set (or reset) the directory. If the directory is
correct you should check that the files referred to have not
been accidentally deleted or renamed. Copies of all the
necessary files can be found on the Multiflash CD-ROM.
3. The Multiflash program runs and opens its main window but
one of the following messages is displayed:
The message display system has failed.
No information available under this keyword
This means that one or both of the files MFLASH.mix and
MFLASH.msg are either damaged or belong to an earlier version
of Multiflash. These files are used by Multiflash to display the
calculation results in the output window.
4. The Multiflash program runs and opens its main window but
the following message is displayed:
The error reporting system has failed.
When Multiflash reports an error it will only give the error
number without any explanation. This means that one or both
of the files MFLASH.eix and MFLASH.err are damaged or an
incorrect version has been found. These files contain the error
messages that Multiflash displays in the output window.
Copies of all the necessary files can be found on the Multiflash
CD-ROM.
5. Key solutions to the problems above are summarised as
follows:

8 Installation

The environment variables are set correctly.

The correct version of the files is installed.

Installation Guide Multiflash for Windows

If the files have been corrupted you may copy the files
required from MF40 directory on the CD-ROM supplied
without re-installation.

6. If the software protection device is not present or cannot be

detected by Multiflash you will see the error messages such as
Security device not found either not present or network
server not running or Cannot initialise security device or
Exceed maximum number of tries.
Run the Multiflash License manager to check if the RLM
software is running. Also if the license server is in a network
computer, make sure that the firewall of the license server is
correctly installed.
If you are using a USB/Parallel dongle, check that the security
device is present and has been securely inserted into the
parallel port or USB port. Make sure you have installed the port
driver and server software.
If you are using a network version of Multiflash check that the
system with the security device attached is running and
connected to the network.
7. If the version number programmed in your software protection
device or license file is not compatible with the version of the
software you have installed you will see the error message The
software version number is not compatible with your licence.
8. If you have problems installing the software or if you get other
error messages which you cannot understand please contact
Infochem. Contact details are given in the section Technical
support on page 11.

Help System
The Multiflash Help system uses Microsofts HTML Help which
requires Internet Explorer to display the help information. If the
Multiflash help files are not installed on a local drive of your
computer (eg. if they are installed on a network drive) you may not
be able to display any of the help topics. This is because Microsoft
has restricted the functionality of HTML Help in recent security
updates. It is possible to work around this restriction but it
involves changes to the Windows Server configuration. For more
information see the website:
http://www.helpware.net/FAR/far_faq.htm and follow the link
Security Updates that Break HH.

New Features and Changes in

Version 4.0

Introduction
As usual the new version includes the results of general
maintenance and improvements in numerical methods over the
past year. Specific features are described below.

Models
Descriptions and references detailing the models are provided in
the User Guide for Models and Physical Properties.

Super TRAPP Viscosity Model

The Super TRAPP viscosity model is an extended corresponding
states model that uses propane as a reference fluid. This model
generally offers improved predictions compared to the previously
available models.

Activity Models: Poynting Correction

The way that the Poynting correction is evaluated for activity
models at supercritical temperatures has been change to avoid
unphysical values of heat capacities.

CSMA model
Four new components have been added to the CSMA model:
RR227EA, 1-butene, cis-2-butene and trans-2-butene.
The mixing rules for the model have been extended. There is the
choice of using an enhanced one-fluid mixing rule or the GERG
mixing model.

GERG-2004 model
The GERG-2004 model for natural gas and other mixtures has been
added. The model is described in the GERG Technical Monograph

Installation Guide Multiflash for Windows

New Features and Changes in Version 4.0 13

15-2007 by O. Kunz et al.. The natural gas components considered

in the GERG model are: methane N2, CO2, ethane, propane, nbutane, iso-butane, n-pentane, iso-pentane, n-hexane, n-heptane, noctane, H2, O2, CO, water, Helium and Argon. The model has been
extended to work with other components and petroleum fractions.

PC-SAFT model
The model now includes the results of recent theoretical
developments to describe electrostatic interactions. New
contributions account for dipolar and quadrupolar interactions.

New BIPs
The binary interaction parameters for H2S, CO2, methane, ethane,
propane and water have been revised to improve the VLE
predictions for the cubic equations of state, CSMA, LKP and SAFT
models. For the CPA model, the CO2-water and H2S-water
association parameters were also improved.

Petroleum Fluid Characterisation and Matching

Delumping Characterised Fluids
The delumping method expands the description of a fluid in which
petroleum fraction pseudo-components are present. Each pseudocomponent is delumped into constituent single carbon number
fractions. The delumped fluid can be loaded into the Multiflash
PVT Analysis tool allowing it to be re-characterized to give an
alternative set of pseudo-components. This is particularly useful
when fluids from other software packages are imported to
Multiflash and the user may wish to re-characterize the fluid with
Multiflash.

Viscosity
The correlation for the liquid viscosity of petroleum fractions has
been improved for heavy components with a boiling point above
570 K.

Databanks
DIPPR
The latest version of DIPPR available is 2010. There are now 2013
components in the databank. Information on new and revised
components is available on request.

Infodata
The number of components in Infodata has increased to 248.
Those added for Multiflash 4.0 are: R227EA; Sulphur-2.

14 New Features and Changes in Version 4.0

Installation Guide Multiflash for Windows

New properties: the polarisability and quadrupole moment

properties have been added. These properties are not currently set
for most components.
The following property values have been revised.
Sulphur-8: all properties.
TEG: liquid density.

Windows GUI
Software framework
The GUI has been upgraded to use the Microsoft .Net framework.
The design is substantially the same as in previous versions but
some details of appearance and behaviour will be different.

Model selection form

The default viscosity model for use with equations of state has
been changed from Pedersen to SuperTRAPP.
A new tab with the title CSMA has been added to the model
selection form. This tab groups together all the model varaints
based on the multi-reference fluid corresponding states model
including the new GERG-2004 model.
A user-defined BIP databank may be included as part of the model
definition.

Delumping Characterised Fluids

The delumping facility can be accessed from the Tools menu or the
toolbar button.

Phase Envelope
The phase envelope plot displays the coordinates corresponding to
the position of the mouse cursor. You can zoom-in on a region by
dragging with the left mouse button.

Closing Windows
Most windows can be closed by pressing the <Escape> key.

Checking for Updates

The Help menu include an option to check for updates to
Multiflash.

RLM license system

installation and management

Introduction
From Multiflash 3.9.13 onwards, the software licensing system that
uses license files becomes the standard license control system in
Multiflash. The software licensing system developed by Reprise
Software is called RLM (Reprise License Manager).
The advantages of the software licensing system are:

No need to wait for the hardware key to arrive

Easier to upgrade if new features are requested

Easy manageable using the Multiflash license manager

To run Multiflash the RLM server has to be installed in the machine

where Multiflash will be running, or it can be installed on a
machine over any network computer that will act as a license
server.
More information is available in the RLM End user manual:
http://www.reprisesoftware.com/RLM_Enduser.html

Installing the RLM license server

When installing Multiflash, by default the license server is also
installed at the end of the installation. The Multiflash license
manager is always installed as part of the license server.
To de-select the installation the RLM server a custom Setup as
shown below should be selected during the installation. Please
note that Multiflash needs to access a license server on either a
local machine or a machine over a network.

The host IDs shows the IDS of the local machine and the RLM
server machine. As shown in the figure, by default the RLM server
is running in the local machine.
The RLM products shows what Multiflash features are available
under the current Multiflash RLM license. Nothing will be shown if
the Multiflash license file is not available or the Use dongle option
is selected. A list of the information shown by the RLM products
is as follows:

Feature name: the features available under the current

Multiflash license.

Version: the maximum valid version of Multiflash that can

be run with the current license.

Expiry date: the date that the features will be no longer

available.

Count: the number of licenses available.

ID: the ID of the computer that can run Multiflash with the
features controlled by the license.

Activating Multiflash with a new license file

In order to issue a Multiflash license file for a designated
computer, some information such as the MAC address of the
computer is required by Infochem.
To copy the relevant information to the clipboard just run the
Multiflash license manager, click Tools->Copy Host ID to
Clipboard and the following dialog box will pop up.

Click OK button to copy the information to Clipboard and then

paste into an email or a .doc file and send it to
support@infochemuk.com.
The following is an example after it is pasted into a file.
Local Machine:

0022191c89e1

Based on the MAC address of the computer or a network server,

the Multiflash license file will be issued depending on the type of
license.
To install a new license file the RLM server needs to be running on
the computer or on a network server.
Click File->Open License file and select the license file that was
sent to by Infochem.

Please note that the file extension of the license file must be .lic,
otherwise the RLM server will not recognise it.
As soon as you load the license file, the Multiflash License Manager
will update the displayed information with the new features.

The information displayed in the example shows what features are

available under the Multiflash license and Multiflash is ready for
use.

Using a centralized license server

If a centralised license server over a network is used to manage all
the licenses, it can be easily achieved with RLM. For Multiflash,
this kind of license is referred to as a Multiflash network license.
On the server machine, launch the Multiflash installation as usual
but use the Custom Setup option and select both License Server
and the Multiflash License Manager only. Make sure that ports
5054, 5053 and 5500 are available and open on the server
machine.
On the client machine that is used to run Multiflash, install
Multiflash as usual. During the installation, use Custom Setup
option to de-select the License server option as the license server
is already installed on a centralized server over a network. After
installation of Multiflash, an environmental variable must be set so
that the Multiflash RLM license server knows where to obtain the
Multiflash license.
To set the environmental variable on the client computer with
Multiflash, launch the Multiflash License Manager from the start
menu and select the License Manager as follows on the client
computer.

After the Multiflash License Manager is opened, select the Tools->

set license host option from the menu options. The following form
will be activated.

It shows that the current server is localhost (local computer) and

uses the default ports. To change the license server, type the
remote server name or IP address in the text box for License Server
and the available port numbers for the License port and the RLM
server port. Then click Set Variable button to apply the change.
The example shown on the form, the remote server np is going to
be set as the new license server.
If the license server is not available because it is off-line or the
ports specified are not open, the license information will be not

22 RLM license system installation and management

displayed on the Multiflash License Manager window as shown

below and the Multiflash software, therefore, is not able to run.

If the license server is available, the Multiflash license manager will

display the license information similar to the following:

Note that the server and the client host IDs are different as the
type of Multiflash license is a network license.
When the license server is on a remote computer, there are some
operations that cannot be done:

Open a license file.

Manage windows service.

However you can send a re-read command to the server to re-load

all the necessary license files via Tools -> Reload license server.

Managing the RLM windows service

The Reprise license manager is recommended to be installed as a
windows service. In this way the RLM license server starts running
automatically with Microsoft Windows.
The Windows service is automatically installed with Multiflash if
the License server option is selected. In order to check the
status of the windows service, click Tools->Manage Windows
Service in the Multiflash License Manager window.

In this case it says that the service is running. The operations you
can perform are:

Stop and Start the service: useful to stop and start the
license server, particularly when Multiflash was re-installed.

Install/remove: can be used to remove the service if the

RLM license server is no longer needed.

Note that administrator rights are needed in order to manage the

windows service in Windows XP. In the case of Windows Vista and
7, the Multiflash License manager has to be run as administrator.

Switch between USB dongle and RLM

If you still use an USB/parallel dongle as the means of license
control with Multiflash, the Multiflash license manager may be
used to stop the Multiflash RLM license server so that the time for
launching Multiflash is not affected by the search of the RLM
license server. By default, when installing Multiflash, the
Multiflash RLM license server is installed and enabled.
To change the license control to the USB dongle, launch the
Multiflash License manager and click the Use USB Dongle option.
You will be asked for the confirmation by clicking the Yes or
No button.

If the Yes button is clicked, no information for the RLM Products

will be displayed and the RLM license server is not allowed.

Sentinel system driver and

server installation for
dongles

Introduction
Multiflash can also be supplied with a USB/Parallel hardware key.
The key must be present in a USB port or a parallel port of your PC
when the program is running. The Sentinel SuperPro server and
Sentinel system driver for the key must be installed before
Multiflash can be run.

Installing the Sentinel SuperPro server and system

Driver
To install the Sentinel SuperPro server and Sentinel system driver
on your computer from CD-ROM:
1. Choose Run from the Start button and Click the Browse button
to locate the file SentinelProtectionInstaller7.6.3.exe from the
CD-ROM. In the Open box the following path and the file name
will be displayed.
d:\Sentinel\Installer\SentinelProtectionInstaller7.6.3.exe
(if your CD-ROM drive is not drive d: the appropriate drive
letter will be displayed.)
Click on the OK button to launch the installation. When the
installation starts follow the InstallShield Wizard on the
screen.
2. In the Setup type, you are offered a choice of 2 types of
installation.
Complete installs:
Sentinel System Drivers
Parallel System Driver
USB System Driver
Sentinel SuperPro Server

26 Sentinel system driver and server installation for donglesInstallation Guide Multiflash for Windows

Infochem normally supplies USB Sentinel hardware keys but

Parallel port keys are still available. If you do not have a USB
key, do not install the USB driver.
Custom: allows you to choose the three options listed above.
The Sentinel SuperPro Server must be always selected in the
installation because the Server has to be run when Multiflash is
running. After the installation, you can run the Sentinel License
Monitor using Web browser as follows.
In the Address Bar of the Web browser, type the name or IP
address of the system (where the hardware key is attached and
protection server is running) in the following format:
http://IP address (or system name): HTTP port number (6002).
For example,
http://198.168.100.254:6002
Press the Enter key. The Sentinel License Monitor Web page is
displayed.

Modifying/Removing the SentinelSuperPro

server/system driver from your computer
Go to the Control Panel from the Start menu.
Select Add/Remove Programs.
Look for the item Sentinel Protection Installer and select it.
The installer will allow you to modify, repair, or remove the
installation, select the option you want and follow the instructions.
If you select Modify, you can add or remove the parallel or USB
driver later.
Depending on the operating system you are using and the
configuration of your computer, you may be asked to reboot.
Diagnostic software which can be used to check if the hardware
key is present is also supplied with the CD-ROM. It can be found in
the directory Sentinel/Medic.

Network license server location

The client environment variable NSP_HOST tells Multiflash which
server to look for when it needs to access a Sentinel SuperPro key.
The supported values for this variable are:

RNBO_SPN_LOCAL which means that Multiflash only

looks for the key on the local machine not on the
network.

Server host name or IP address tells Multiflash to act

as a network application. First it will look for a key
locally and then on the selected server.

If the NSP_HOST variable is not set Multiflash will look for a key on
the local PC and then send a broadcast message to the network to
look for a server and a key. Once all the licenses have been used
up, the following message will be displayed.

However, when the number of licences used is over the hardware

limit of the key, the following message is displayed. This is a
feature of the SentinelSuperPro software.

To avoid this confusing error message with a network licence key,

it is recommended that the NSP_HOST should be either set to the
Server host name or to the IP address of the computer with a key
attached to it.

Timeout of licenses
The Sentinel SuperPro server allocates a license when you start
Multiflash. A license that is not used is automatically released by
the server after a timeout period. The purpose of the timeout
period is to ensure that licenses held by an application that has
terminated abnormally are not tied up indefinitely. The default
timeout period is 3600 seconds but this can be adjusted by setting
the NSP_TIMEOUT environment variable. It can be set to any value
(in seconds) between 60 seconds and 30 days. For example to set a
timeout period of 20 mins set NSP_TIMEOUT to 1200. To specify

28 Sentinel system driver and server installation for donglesInstallation Guide Multiflash for Windows

an infinite timeout period set NSP_TIMEOUT to INFINITE (note that

the string must be upper-case).
When using the Multiflash GUI or Excel interface the license is
activated when calculations are carried out. However, in order to
ensure that the licensing system does not impose too much
overhead the license is not activated on every calculation. If a
license is timed out Multiflash will request a new license. The
request may fail if another user or application has obtained the
license in the meanwhile.

Resetting the server

To reset the SuperPro server, ie. to release any licenses that are
currently allocated, the server must be stopped and restarted. This
must be done on the computer that has the key attached. To stop
and restart the server you must have Administrator rights.
Resetting the server can be done using the Control
Panel/Administrative Tools/Services option. Scroll down the list of
services to Sentinel Protection Server. Select this service and then
click on Stop and then Restart.
An alternative method is to open a command line window and type
the following commands:
net stop sentinelprotectionserver
net start sentinelprotectionserver
Resetting the server will affect all users and applications that
currently have a Multiflash license.

Windows firewall compatibility

If you are running the recent version of Windows the Windows
firewall is enabled by default. This could prevent the SuperPro
server being located across a network. The Sentinel Installer will
automatically offer to make the necessary adjustment to the
firewall settings.
If you do not allow the Installer to change the firewall settings and
you are running a network version of Multiflash you may need to
make changes manually to make UDP port 6001 accessible on the
machine that has the key attached. You will need Administrator
rights to do this.
1. Open the Control Panel then open the Windows Firewall
item.
2. If the firewall is turned on proceed as follows.
3. Click on the Exceptions tab and then on the Add Port
button.
4. You need to enable UDP port 6001 as shown below.
