to build a community of African scholars who
are able to identify upcoming economic issues,
direct the development of relevant data and
provide leadership to Masters students. This
situation perpetuates the excessive influence
of non-African professionals in analyzing
and formulating economic policies for the
Continent.

Objectives
The PhD Programme is intended to: provide
the highest level of training in economics by
coursework and thesis; strengthen teaching and
research capacity in Uganda as well as in SubSaharan African countries; increase the pool
of potential researchers and policy analysts;
and reduce the need for Ugandans to train
abroad when services of comparable quality
can be provided at home at reasonable cost.
Highly trained and specialized Economists
are of paramount importance in the generation
of knowledge for a better understanding of
the economy and the design of appropriate
policies to improve economic performance.

It is therefore important that Makerere

University Faculty of Economics and
Management, the primary Economics
Institution in Uganda undertakes the training
of such Economists.
Programme Structure

In contemporary societies, the most highly

trained and specialized Economists are those
who have studied and acquired the PhD degrees
with Coursework and Dissertation from
recognized Universities. The growing demand

the under funding and decay of the universities
have led many of those who remain in Africa
to become consultants for international
organizations. They are frequently overcommitted. As a result, it is almost impossible

Duration
The Programme integrates theory, tools
and African applications into academic
teaching, ensuring that the theory is firmly
grounded on the empirical side. The 4 year
programme of study leading to the Doctor
of Philosophy in Economics requires that a
student takes four semesters of Coursework,
does comprehensive examinations and also
completes a PhD Thesis. During the first
