OBJECTIVE
This procedure is developed to ensure that surface preparation, blast and
paint is carried out in a controlled manner.

2.0

SCOPE
This procedure also describes the activities and the inspection which enable to
paint the valves with the zinc rich epoxy, the intermediate coat epoxy mastic
and the top coat polyurethane.

3.0

REFERENCES
GS 19-1-2 Paint and Protective coatings.

4.0

SURFACE PREPARATION
After having duly checked that the valves are properly protected at the ends
and in the areas not to be painted, proceed with the blasting.
The surface shall be then blast cleaned to SSPC-SP 10, GS-19-1-2
-

Blast profile shall be range of 30 60 microns

The blast profile has to be controlled by means of a suitable instrument

i.e profile gauge. The blast profile shall be measured and recorded.

Only dry abrasive blasting product shall be used and it shall be free from
dust, alts and other impurities.

All sharp edges shall be grind rounded smoothly before blasting.

APPLICATION
Coating shall be applied before any visible deterioration occurs and within a
maximum of four (4) hours after surface preparation.
Coating shall not be applied to surfaces whose temperature is 3 deg C above
the dew point and when the relative air humidity exceeds 85%.
Coating shall be applied in a uniform layer by airless spray.
Coatings shall not be applied to previously coated surface unless the
proceeding coat has dried.
Care shall be paid for coatings edges, corners and areas difficult to coat
adequately by spray. In this case extra coat by brush may be applied
immediately before the overall spray coat.

7.0

REPAIRS
Defective or damaged coatings shall be removed by scraping or abrasive or
sweep blasting until a surface suitable for overcoating is obtained and the
appropriate coatings applied in accordance with this procedure.
When the defect found exceeds the 20% of the coated area it is judged
unacceptable and the item rejected, sand blasted and recoated according
to this procedure.
Any repair shall obtained EMEPMI written approval prior to commence repair.

TEST AND INPECTION

The following inspection shall be checked and recorded.
a) Temperature and relative humidity.
b) Profile gauge.
c) Wet film Thickness.
d) Dry film thickness
e) Steel temperature.
f) Visual inspection.

Note:
For each coating system or approved alternatives, an application matrix (as per
Appendix G, GS 19-1-2) shall be submitted for EMEPMI approval, including coating
system test panels for each application matrix. Test panel paint trial shall be
conducted as per Appendix H, GS 19-1-2, to ensure coating system compliance to
