Q 1 Answer In one or two words: MCQ

1). What is air layer from the surface of the earth up to certain km called?
Atmosphere
2). Up to how many km from the surface of the earth, air layer is spread? 800 km
3). How much air pressure per unit square cm is exerted on our body? 9.8N
4). Which instrument is used to measure air-pressure? Barometer
5). Which of the following is a unit to measure air pressure (atmospheric pressure)?
Bar
(a) Newton (b) square cm (c) cm3 (d) Bar
6). As we go higher and higher above the earth surface, the air pressure decreases
(a) Increases (b) Decreases (c) Remains constant.
7). How much is the air pressure inside the inflated balloon with compare to outside
atmosphere?
(a) More (b) Less (c) Equal
8). Which of the following instrument does not work on the principle of air pressure?
(a) Pichkari (b) Ink dropper (c) Thermometer (d) Syringe (e) Hand Pump
Q 2 Define Atmosphere
Ans. The layer of air from the surface of the earth up to 800 km is called
atmosphere.
Q 3 Define Atmospheric Pressure
Ans. The pressure (force) exerted by air around us is known as atmospheric pressure.
Q 4 Give Reason.
1) Air exerts pressure on our body but we dont get crushed by air pressure? Why?
Ans. Because, there is air inside our body. The pressure of air inside the body and in
surrounding is balanced. So we are not crushed.
The pressure inside our bodies is equal to the atmospheric pressure.
2) We can suck water/cold drinks with the help of a straw.
While drinking by straw, we suck the air that is there in the straw. When the air from
the straw is sucked, the pressure inside the straw decreases. Due to this, the pressure
of the liquid/water around the straw becomes higher. This higher pressure outside the
straw pushes the liquid into the straw. So the water rises in straw due to pressure of
water/cold drink in the glass.
3) When air absorber rubber cork (rubber sucker) is pressed toward the table or any
smooth surface, it gets stick to the surface. Why?
Ans. When air absorber of rubber is pressed the air comes out, so pressure inside the
air absorber decreases while the outer pressure is more. The rubber cork sticks to the
surface because the pressure of atmosphere acts on it which presses the rubber cork.
Q 5 Why the balloon remains inflated?

Ans. The air in the balloons keeps it inflated. Pressure in the balloon is maintained
because molecules in the air constantly collide with the inner walls of the balloon. So
the balloon remains inflated.
Q 6 Give the name of four activities of your day to day life where air pressure is
used.
Ans. 1) To fill ink with the help of ink dropper 2) To drink cold drink with the help of
straw
3) To fill air into bicycle tube with the help of bicycle pump 4) Drawing medicinal liquid
into the syringe. 5) Hand pump is used to draw water upwards from an underground
well.

(Extra for understanding)

Human bodies are used to air pressure. The air pressure in our lungs, ears and
stomachs is the same as the air pressure outside of our bodies, which ensures
that we dont get crushed. Our bodies are also flexible enough to cope (adjust)
when the internal and external pressures arent exactly the same. Aeroplanes
need pressurised cabins to compensate for the lower air pressure at high
altitudes. Despite this artificial atmosphere, the air pressure inside an
aeroplane is not the same as at sea level. You might have noticed that if you
drink from a plastic bottle during a flight and put the lid back on, when you
land the bottle will be crushed. This is because the air in the bottle is at the
lower pressure of the cabin and it cant withstand the higher air pressure at
ground level.
