These illustrations and descriptions highlight my journey around the UK with my

mobile papermaking workshop during book festivals which celebrated the printed
word. I have helped people gain insight into the history, techniques, methods and
recipes used in hand papermaking. This involved learning about famous authors and
their favourite flowers, using words, music and illustrations in books to decorate the
papers, and even recycling old books and using the fibres in them to make new pulp.

Making paper at literature festivals combines the

plants and flowers which various authors have
written about in their work with the characters they
have developed and the ideas which they have
conveyed. For example, Charles Dickens wrote
about Oliver Twist, oakum, and stolen silk scarves:
all of these things were incorporated into our
handmade papers. The paper became a visual
and allegorical representation of
the author's composition.

Words, music and 200 year old recycled paper! Damaged
Shakespeare books which were beyond repair, were
ground up; their pages turned into new pulp. Evocative
pieces of text were retained, though, and embedded, to
give the old paper a new meaning. We also recycled an
Edwardian songbook, and made paper from old jeans!

Shakespeare Paper
Created by Sally Birch, during the 2013 Chipping Campden Literature Festival.
The paper was made using sheets of paper from Shakespeares
Romeo and Juliet. Printed in 1811, the books were originally made with
recycled linen rags. The papers were watermarked 1807-1810. Some of
Shakespeares words have been embedded in the sheet shown below. The
little black specks on the off white paper are particles of ink from the original
publication. An end to an old book, but a suitable beginning for a new piece of
paper

Sally Birch is a well-known and accomplished Botanical Artist. Inspired by the papers
contents, she illustrated it with her own hand-painted rose to make this beautiful piece
of original artwork.

Papermaking and Literature Blend Well Together.

Its a friendly way to mix people, mix authors, mix flowers, mix words,
mix letters, mix ideas, mix music and even mix metaphors !
People who attend festivals enjoy books, stories, words and ideas, and they
delight in finding new ways to represent them.

My aim is to remind everyone that without paper, there would

be no great literature !
