EGGER WOOD CONSTRUCTION

ExtErior Wall With 3 funCtions
As well as providing reinforcement, EUROSTRAND OSB
also acts as a vapour barrier (sd-value > 2.0 m). In vapour
permeable constructions, there is no need to invest
extra labour on installing a vapour barrier. The OSB-layer
also provides a sufficient degree of airtightness on patched
joints, installations and permeations. EGGER DHF is used
on the outside of walls as an external diffusion-open
(sd-value < 0.2 m) and windproof layer behind a ventilated
facade. This protects the structure during the construction
phase, allowing interior work to proceed to schedule. For
constructions with special sound-proofing and thermal
insulation requirements an external layer of EGGER DFF e.g.
beneath larch wood planking is recommended.

We have a variety of interesting cladding options for you to
choose from. From the modern thermal insulation composite
systems (TICS), with a classic rendered facade or a quarter-brick
effect, through curtain wall facades to the popular wooden facades
in the form of laths, planks or shingling. You can have any
colour or type you wish. Even demanding architectural
requirements can be fulfilled using these systems.
intErnal Wall
Its superb technical properties and varied formats even with
tongue and groove profile make EUROSTRAND OSB ideal for use
in internal walls. With EUROSTRAND OSB it is easy to attach
loads such as cupboards or shelves to the wall surfaces without
requiring special dowels. Another advantage of EUROSTRAND
OSB 4 TOP is that it gives you the option of reducing the
distances between the nail and the edge of the board in
question. This allows the wood cross section of the loadbearing structure to be optimised and thereby reduces the
heat loss through the wooden supporting structure.

CEiling and floor ConstruCtions

The quality of living spaces depends on the quality of the
sound insulation. A well planned construction can prevent
any undesired influences and disturbances. The minimum
requirements are set out in the relevant standards. Additional
sound proofing requirements must be specially agreed with the
developer.

excellent Ln,w = 7 dB in wood-beam
ceilings following DIN EN ISO 140-11,
EGGER DFF boards, in conjunction with
15/18 mm OSB flooring boards, are also
suitable for floating floor systems on new
builds, restorations and renovations.
Here the circumferential tongue and
groove profile allows for easy, tight,
installation of the boards for uniformly
high sound protection. With dimensions
of 2.50 0.675 m, the EGGER DFF boards
are very easy to use even in existing
buildings due to their light weight
(14 kg/board).

fully-insulatEd pitChEd roof

Of all construction elements, the roof
is the most exposed to weather and
environmental influences. Its design and
construction are therefore of particular
importance. EGGER offers two system
solutions for this field of application.
EGGER DFF as rigid underlay is ideal for
thermal and sound insulation requirements, while EGGER DHF is perfect for
additional structural and fire protection
requirements. Use of loft space as living
quarters places whole new demands on
roofs. Requirements such as summer
overheating protection, thermal
insulation in the winter, as well as
appropriate sound proofing and fire
protection can easily be met.

EGGER DFF
VAPOUR PERMEABLE, MOISTURE REGULATING WOOD FIBREBOARDS
DFF was specially designed by EGGER for use as a vapour
permeable light exterior cladding for roof and wall construction.
When used as a sub-roof board all of its advantages become
obvious. Here the board can be used as a second water-bearing
layer. Its useful insulating properties help protect against
summer heat input in the construction and improves the noise

control of the structure. EGGER DFF boards have been tested for
use as impact sound insulation boards under floating
EUROSTRAND OSB boards. Further application examples can
be found in this brochure on page 4/5.

PROCESSING RECOMMENDATIONS
The following instructions also apply to EUROSTRAND OSB,
EGGER DHF and EGGER DFF. These are essential for correct
use of the boards.

max. 80 cm

storagE and transport

Correct storage and protective measures during transport are
essential for problem-free handling. The following simple
principles should be taken into account:
EUROSTRAND OSB, EGGER DHF and DFF boards should be
stored flat on several pieces of squared timber. The span
width should be no greater than 80 cm and the pieces of
squared timber should all be the same height.
If several pallets are stacked on top of each other then
the squared timber should be aligned by height.
Steel bands should be undone immediately in the fabricators
storeroom to prevent compressive strain on the pallet.
Upright storage (practically vertical) is only suitable for a
small number of boards on a dry floor. Tongue and groove
boards In this case, only stand them on the groove side.
In the case of transport by forklift truck the squared timber
chosen must be sufficiently high so as to prevent damage.
The boards must be sufficiently protected against weathering
before being packed (closed lorry tarpaulin, polythene
sheeting).
Storage rooms should be uniformly air conditioned and free
from large moisture and temperature fluctuations.
Before using the boards, a 48-hour period is recommended
to allow the wood to acclimatise to local humidity.

Remove the steel bands on site

Package protected by film cover

15

MoisturE protECtion
EUROSTRAND OSB is characterised by low thickness swelling
and a high degree of dimensional stability (see technical data:
dimensional changes under influence of moisture). When used
as a supporting and bracing element, appropriate measures
should be taken against weathering. According to EN/TS 12872
wood and wood-based materials with the following equilibrium
moistures (see table) are fit for use if installation is carried out
correctly and no impermissible condensation can form.

before installation the following should be inspected on site:

Installed dry,
no moisture during usage.

11 % to 17 %

Occasional increase in humidity during use;

Installed externally under roof. No direct

Service class 2, 65 % to 85 %
Humid conditions

Dry screeds consisting of wood-based materials should only

be laid in enclosed buildings once windows and doors have
been fitted.
When installation is carried out in rooms without a cellar
below, ensure sufficient thermal insulation to prevent
condensation forming on the underside of the board and
possible warpage to the floor.
In the case of concrete ceilings install a vapour barrier first.
PE film with d > 0.2 mm which overlaps joints by 30 cm and
can be installed right up to the upper edge of the floor is
suitable.
The board moisture should correspond to the local humidity
where it will be installed.
In the case of floor joists made of dry wood note that u < 15 %,
since shrinkage of the subconstruction can result in long-term
squeaking noises.
When using wet construction materials, such as plaster,
paint and wallpapering the resulting high humidity should be
dispersed by adequate ventilation or other suitable means.

The use of EUROSTRAND OSB as a vapour

control layer at the inside of vapour permeable
constructions guarantees a sufficient high
safety against condensation risk.
16

Wood and wood-based materials must not take in moisture

from the surrounding construction components.
If the floor cannot be immediately installed after the dry
screed has been laid then the board surface must be covered
with a PE film or other suitable material to prevent it drying
out or becoming more moist on one side, leading to

In its delivery condition, wood waste can be used as a material
or for the production of energy. In this case it is classified according
to Appendix III of the Waste Wood Ordinance to (EWC Codes)
030105, 150103 or 170201. According to the waste code, it will be
decided by local waste laws what form the disposal will take.

fastEning
EUROSTRAND OSB can be attached with all fasteners suitable
for chipboard, such as screws, staples and nails. The length of
the nail/screw should be 2.5 board thickness and at least
50 mm. With staples, a minimum wire gauge of 1.53 mm should
be used. Corrosion resistant fasteners, e.g. made from galvanised
or stainless steel, are to be used. Due to the high withdrawal
strength, only flat-head nails with gutter groove, screw nails or
annularly threaded nails should be used (see also DIN 1052-2).
The crosswise orientation of the strands in the EUROSTRAND
OSB creates a secure base for the fastener, even in the outermost board edge. The thick core-layer structure ensures a high
withdrawal strength around the edges.

CLADDING/STRUCTURAL SHEATHING
WITH WOOD-BASED PANELS
Installation instructions
Detailed recommendations and basic rules for installation of wood-based materials
for roofs, walls and ceilings can be found in EN/TS 12872.
Edge distances/expansion joint floor/roof, ceiling
The installed wood-based panels must have an extra space of 15mm to the surrounding
construction components. This extra space enables tension free work to be carried out
on the panels as well as ventilation in the case of flooring. Skirtings must be fitted so
that the floor has adequate ventilation. Glued plastic skirtings are not suitable.
Trusses, etc. in the space should be sufficiently exposed. In areas with edge lengths
>10m, expansion joints that are permanently elastic should be arranged.
Wall
In the case of walls with edge lengths >10m expansion joints approx. 1015mm
wide should also be added.
Floor installation
The installation of the wood-based panels is carried out by joining them together
and therefore requires hardly any cutting in the case of floating installation. Cross
joints must not be formed. Panels must be offset by at least 40cm. Tongue and groove
panels can be fitted in the adjacent wall area by simply putting them in at an angle
in the groove. Free floating panel joints parallel to the supports are not permissible
according to Eurocode 5 Timber construction. Overhanging panels must be cut back
to the size of the decking. The frame of the subconstruction should match that of
the available panel sizes in order to minimise cutting. On old floorboards, first check
the old screws, and tighten them if necessary. Cut free any boards that are rubbing
against each other. Be aware of functional adjacent construction.

Glueing of tongue and groove

Laying with the T&G Quick profile

Board thickness
In the case of floating installations with EUROSTRAND OSB use a board thickness
of 18mm. In the case of high concentrated and individual loads use a board
thickness of at least 25mm.
Subconstruction FOR CERAMIC FLOOR COVERING
The EUROSTRAND OSB boards must have a board thickness of at least 25mm for
floors and 18mm in the case of walls and they must have high bending strength.
The tongue and groove flooring boards must be glued under one another and pushed
into place with force. They are screwed into the substructure (see also fastening
section). Deflection must not exceed e/600. When installing ceramic floors include
permanently elastic expansion joints every 34m.

19

EGGER DHF AND DFF SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

EggEr dhf and dff as sub-roofing on thE raftErs
EGGER DHF and DFF are vapour permeable underlay boards. They form a second
water-repellent layer under the roof covering. They can be used on roofs with a minimum
pitch of 16 with a max. 8 below the standard roof pitch (SRP) of the planned roof
decking. They are installed with the tongue and groove joints from the eaves to the
roof ridge, with tongues pointing towards the ridge. In the case of a shortfall of more
than 8 the standard roof pitch must be a rain and water tight subroof. With a board
thickness 15 mm EGGER DHF, as rafters, is walkable up to a rafter grid of 1 m acc. to
ONR 22219-2 (dry board). This does not apply to EGGER DFF.

note
If the pitch of the roof is less then 8
further measures should be taken
to ensure rain and water tightness
of the roof covering (i.e. taping the
EGGER DHF/DFF panel joints).

undErlay ClassifiCation
As interlocked underlay (boards with circumferential tongue and groove profile), the
boards are assigned to Class 3 according to the ZVDH guidelines. EGGER DHF and
EGGER DFF can be installed without an additional nail sealing strip under the counterbatten and without taping the tongue and groove joint, even in case of elevated
requirements and with a roof pitch up to 8 less than the regulation pitch. Compliance
with the minimum roof pitch of 16 is mandatory. Openings (for chimneys etc.) and
joints (covings, groins, dormers etc.) must be taped using suitable adhesive tape.
Increased requirements in addition to shortfall of standard roof pitch:
Use of attic, especially as living space
Special construction features, e.g. dormer windows, ridges, complicated roof shapes
Climatic factors, e.g. mountains or coasts
Local requirements, e.g. from building control
additional gluing
A taped underlay must be implemented when the roof pitch is less than the regulation
pitch of 16 by a maximum of 8. All board joints are taped using suitable adhesive
tape. The minimum roof pitch is 10.
transiEnt WEathEring
After installing EGGER DHF and DFF the roof covering/facade should be fitted
immediately. Between March and November the boards can be exposed to natural
weathering for 2 months as a temporary roof. In the winter months, structural
measures must be employed to ensure that the external covering layer of EGGER DHF
cannot freeze, since this would seriously impair the diffusion ability of the external
panelling cladding and potentially lead to moisture damage. In the winter months it
should only be exposed to natural weathering for a maximum of 2 weeks. If EGGER
DHF is used for load-bearing purposes then the moisture protection regulations of the
approval Z-9.1-454 apply and DIN 68800-2, i.e. the fitted boards have to be protected
from natural weathering.

EGGER DHF/DFF
used as rigid underlay

note
During the winter months, icing of
the outer layer of the EGGER DHF
board must be excluded by means
of suitable construction measures,
since this would severely impair the
diffusion characteristics of exterior
sheathing, which may result in
moisture damage.

uninsulatEd CoCk-loft
The roof area of an uninsulated cock-loft and an unconverted attic must also be
ventilated even by using a vapour permeable sub-roofing material. The recommended
ventilation cross-section, derived from the regulations for the ventilation of flat roofs
is 200 cm per running meter at the ridge and the eaves.

Ventilation of uninsulated cock-loft

DIMENSIONING
note

Wooden structures are designed according to the appropriate National and European
standards. In the medium-term, Eurocode 5 has been introduced as an EU-wide
regulation for the design of wooden constructions. Characteristic values for the
structural design of EUROSTRAND OSB in accordance with Eurocode 5 can be
taken from DIN EN 12369-1 or from the building authorities.
The following assessment tables were created using the regulations for EUROSTRAND
OSB 4 TOP in accordance with approval Z-9.1-566 as well as the rules for the assessment
of wooden constructions in accordance with Eurocode 5.

The tables contain recommended

values and are not intended as a
substitute for individual verification
by a structural engineer.
