Action

Learning is a technique used primarily in leadership and management

development and is based on the simple idea that leaders and managers learn
best by working together in a group, helping each other to find solutions to real
work problems through discussion, coaching and facilitation. The rapidly
changing environment and unpredictable global challenges require organizations
and individuals to both learn and act at the same time.
The key role of the action learning coach is to optimize the groups ability to
learn and thereby become more capable to quickly and innovatively solve the
problem. Through the use of reflective questions, the coach helps group
members to examine their actions and interactions and thereby improve their
ability as a group not only to solve current problems, but also to better solve
future problems they will will encounter as a team or as individuals.

World Institute of Action Learning (www.wial.org)
In 1995, WIAL co-founder Michael Marquardt met Reg Revans, widely
recognized as the father of Action Learning. The two men began a dialogue that
led to the development of the WIAL model of Action Learning, which focuses on
continual learning. After years of testing, research and refinement, the model
took final form in the renowned six components and two ground rules of Action
Learning.
WIAL International Affiliates help to promote Action Learning across the globe
and has affiliates in more than 17 cities in North American, South America,
Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. In November 2014, WIAL International
approves the setting up of the Malaysian affiliate.
WIAL provides its affiliates with resources and support so that they benefit from
research and best practices. WIAL supports affiliates in the training and
development of certified Action Learning coaches in their regions. She supports
its affiliates as they reach out to all sectors village, municipal, regional and
national government, university, business, NGO community where Action
Learning can transform how organizations approach problem solving, leadership
development, team building, as well as organizational and individual learning.

WIAL Malaysia
In November 2014, the WIAL International board approved the setting up of
WIAL Malaysia led by William and Isa J. Currently there are only a handful of
Certified Action Learning Coaches in Malaysia and we forsee great potential on
Action Learning from both the corporate and the public sectors. In the world of
business today, technology, globalization and innovation advanced at breakneck
speed and the governments Economic Transformation Program (ETP) initiative
to turn Malaysia into a high income economy by the year of 2020, requires the
elements of real people resolving and taking action on real problems and
learning while doing so.

Action Learning Applications
Since Reg Revans first introduced it to coal miners of Wales and England in the
1940s, Action Learning has become a dynamic process that assists organizations
to challenge the status quo, and to develop creative, flexible and successful
strategies. It positions inquiry at the core of organizational behavior, develops
critical thinking and creates mutual respect among employees at all levels.
Action Learning has emerged as a method of choice for global companies,
government agencies, and non-profit groups that want to improve quality, cut
costs, create new products and services, and change the cultures of their
organizations. WIAL's Action Learning approach has elevated the performance of
hundreds of organizations worldwide including Microsoft, Caterpillar, Booz Allen
Hamilton, Boeing, Samsung, LG Electronics, Alcoa, US Departments of State,
Energy, Commerce and Agriculture, Hong Kong Transit, Goodrich, National
Institutes of Health, Singapore Airlines, IBM, Nokia, Constellation Energy,
Siemens, Posco Steel, International Labor Organization, McKay Foundation, and
SulAmerica Insurance. Many universities around the world have incorporated
the WIAL model into their curricula and learning methodology.
Action Learning helps individuals:

Enhance personal effectiveness and productivity

Reflect on and learn from individual experience
Enhance personal leadership and soft skills
Develop self-confidence and assertiveness
Improve awareness of how assumptions, beliefs, attitudes and
organizational interests influence thinking, decisions and actions
Develop Emotional Intelligence (EI): self awareness, others' awareness
and adaptability
Find the courage to speak up and encourage others to do the same

Certification by WIAL as an Action Learning Team Coach requires participation
in three two day workshops in which participants build progressively their
proficiency in coaching teams engaged in Action Learning and the development
and implementation of an Action Learning project. The requirements are
explained below in detail.

The three workshops that comprise the Action Learning Team Coaching
Certification program include:
Foundations Workshop (2 days)
CALC1 - Coaching workshop for Action Learning Coaches One (2 days)
CALC2 - Certification for Action Learning Coaches Two (2 days)

In the Foundations program, which is pre-requisite for CALC1 & CALC2,
participants are exposed to the theoretical as well as the practical aspects of
Action Learning. Participants are given the option of experiencing Action
Learning as a participant and/or a coach.
In CALC1 and CALC2 participants increase their proficiency as team coaches,
learn from their project experience and receive feedback regarding their team
coaching proficiency from peers and the session lead. All CALC sessions are lead
by a Master Action Learning Coach (MALC) or Senior Action Learning Coaches
(SALC).

Certification Requirements
1) Practice Sessions (CALC1 & CALC2) each participant will:
I.
II.

Act as an Action Learning Team Coach once during in each workshop.

If team sizes allow, participants will observe at least once. Observers,
along with the session lead, will observe opportunities for interventions
and give feedback on the effectiveness of the intervention made by the
participant who is practicing and developing skills as an Action Learning
Team Coach.

2) Paper: Participants will complete a paper describing an Action Learning

project where they are the primary interface for engaging the client. The paper

the Action Learning Team defines and develops plans for implementing
solutions.
