PETROLEUM INDUSTRY:
The petroleum industry includes the global processes of
exploration, extraction, refining, transporting (often by oil tankers and
pipelines), and marketing petroleum products.
The Industry is usually divided into three major components:
Upstream Industry
Midstream Industry (usually included in the downstream category)
Downstream Industry

UPSTREAM INDUSTRY:
The upstream oil sector is commonly known as the exploration
and production sector (E&P) sector. The upstream sector includes the
searching for crude oil and natural gas underground and or underwater,
drilling of exploratory well, and subsequently drilling and operating the wells
that recovers and brings the crude oil and natural gas to the surface.
The upstream industry consists of:
exploration and production (E&P) companies
Service companies.

E&P COMPANIES IN PAKISTAN:


ENI PAKISTAN LIMITED:

Eni is an Italian multinational oil and gas company headquartered in


Rome.Eni has been operating in Pakistan since 2000. Eni Pakistan is the
operator of the Bhit and Kadanwari gas producing fields. Eni Pakistan is the
operator of Gorakh, Mithi, Rajar, Umarkot and Thar exploration Blocks
onshore and has two offshore exploration licences M & N in the Indus
Delta.

BHP-BILLITON (THE BROKEN HILL):

BHP Billiton is an Anglo-Australian multinational
mining and petroleum company.BHP Billiton Petroleum has been active in
Pakistan since 1994. After a successful exploration review in 1993-4, in 1995
a Joint Venture led by BHP Billiton Petroleum was awarded the Dadu
Concession located in the Province of Sindh. The Zamzama Gas Field was
discovered in 1998. On behalf of its joint venture partners, BHP Billiton
Petroleum is the operator of the Zamzama production facility. The Zamzama
field represents BHP Billitons first commercial production in Pakistan.

OIL & GAS DEVELOPMENT COMPANY


LIMITED (OGDCL):

OGDCL was created under an ordinance in 1961, with the
responsibility to undertake exploration, development & promotion of oil &
gas prospects in Pakistan. The company has a sound equipment &
operational base which includes drilling rigs, workover rigs, a geological field
party, seismic crews, engineering field crews, gas gathering & pipeline
construction unit, seismic data processing center, geological analysis
laboratory, wireline logging unit, cementing units and data logging unit. The
company also operates nine oil & gas processing plants, a mini refinery and
LPG & Sulphur recovery units.

MARI GAS COMPANY LIMITED (MGCL):

Mari Petroleum company limited is found in December 1984.
Mari Petroleum Company Limited (formerly, Mari Gas Company

Limited) is one of Pakistans largest E&P (petroleum exploration and


production) companies, operating the Countrys 2nd largest gas reservoir at
Mari Field, District Ghotki, Sindh. The Company is primarily engaged in
Exploration, Development and Production of hydrocarbon potentials (Natural
gas, Crude oil, Condensate & LPG) in the Country.

PAKISTAN PETROLEUM (PVT.) Ltd:

The pioneer of the natural gas industry in the
country, Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has been a key player in the
energy sector since the 1950s. PPL operates six producing fields across the
country at Sui (Pakistans largest gas field), Adhi, Kandhkot, Chachar,
Mazarani and Hala. PPL together with its subsidiaries has a portfolio of 48
exploration assets of which the company operates 27, including one contract
in Iraq, while 21 blocks, comprising three offshore leases in Pakistan and two
onshore concessions in Yemen, are operated by joint venture partners.

MOL HUNGARIAN OIL AND GAS PUBLIC


LIMITED COMPANY:

MOL Pakistan has been working in the country since 1999. A fully owned
subsidiary of the MOL group registered in Netherlands. MOL Pakistan
presently produces Oil & Gas from TAL Block as the operator of the

and has recently acquired significant shares in the Karak block as nonoperating partner which is considered as another promising prospect for the
future discoveries.

PAKISTAN OILFIELDS LIMITED (POL):

Pakistan Oilflelds Limited (POL), a subsidiary of The
Attock Oil Company Limited (AOC), was incorporated on
November 25, 1950. In 1978, POL took over the exploration
and production business of AOC. Since then, POL has been

investing independently and in joint venture with various exploration and


production companies for the search of oil and gas in the country.

OMV PAKISTAN:

OMV started exploration activities in the Middle Indus desert area of Sindh
in 1991 and since then has discovered and developed several gas fields.
OMV is amongst the largest international natural gas producers in Pakistan
delivering around 400 mnscf/d gross sales gas from its operated processing
plants in Sawan, Kadanwari and Rehmat. OMV is also actively following up
the exploration opportunities in Pakistan by drilling new exploration
prospects and further expanding the exploration portfolio.

DEWAN PETROLEUM (PvT.) LIMITED(DPL):

DPL started its operations in 2005 by acquiring majority working interest
in Safed Koh exploration license (EL) and became the operator of the Salsabil
gas field in theDPL holds six exploration Licences and one Development &
Production lease in Pakistan. Four of these are in the Punjab Platform
adjacent to the Pak-India border, while the fifth block is situated adjacent to
major gas fields i.e. Sui, Uch and Loti in Baluchistan Safed Koh Concession.

PEL is a private sector Pakistani E&P company. It was established in 1994.


PEL currently operates 9 onshore and 1 offshore, 4 development and
production leases in Pakistan. It has so far drilled 15 exploration and
development wells and has recently completed drilling three deep wildcat
exploration wells in joint ventures. PEL is presently producing natural gas
from four gas fields. It is also undertaking the development of the low BTU
gas field at Kandra for power generation.

KUWAIT FOREIGN PETROLEUM EXPLORATION

Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (KUFPEC) was established
by its parent company Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) in 1981. UFPEC

the second half of that decade and first production in the mid-1990s.
KUFPEC is presently producing gas from Badhra field, Qadirpur Field,
Kadanwari gas field,Zamzama field. KUFPEC also holds exploration licence of
Jati block and development licences of Zarghan south field and Sukhpur
block.

New Horizon Exploration and Production Limited is a
regional E&P company, with activities in Pakistan and Tajikistan. NHEPL is
registered in Pakistan and started its operations on October 16, 2006. NHEPL
was awarded its first exploration license, Kunri Block, by the Government of
Pakistan on June 5, 2007 and the second exploration license, Jherruck Block,
on January 31, 2008. NHEPL is focused on identification and development for
production of oil and natural gas assets in most prospective areas, Kunri
Block located to the east of Badin area and Jherruck Block to the west of
Badin area.

Polish Oil & Gas Company having its Head Office in


Warsaw, opened its Pakistan Branch Office in Islamabad in September 1997,
for oil & gas exploration in Pakistan. It had been granted three Concession
Areas in Pakistan during 1997-98 for Oil & Gas Exploration. They were
Khanpur West and Sabzal in District Rahimyar Khan in Punjab province and
Mekhtar, District Loralai of Balochistan Province. In 2009 PGNiG has drilled
and completed Rehman-1 well which has discovered Tight Gas reservoir in

Pab formation within Kirthar Block located in District Dadu (Sindh). This is
First-ever gas production from unconventional so called Tight Gas
formation in Pakistan.

Premier has been present in Pakistan, as a non-operator, since 1988. In
1990, we discovered the Qadirpur field. Permiers Pakistan production arises
from its holdings in Qadirpur, Kadanwari, Zamzama, Bhit/Badhra, Zarghun
south field. Its Average production in Pakistan during 2013 was 14,900 boepd
(barrels of oil equivalent per day).

UNITED ENERGY PAKISTAN LIMITED


(UEPL):

UEPL is a subsidiary of United Energy Group (UEG) a Hong Kong listed
company. United Energy Pakistan Limited (UEPL) assumed control of oil and
gas exploration and production assets managed by BP Pakistan in
September, 2011. These assets consist of 9 producing and exploration blocks
in Sindh province and 4 offshore exploration blocks in the Arabian Sea. UEPL
works in an area that spans 8 districts in Sindh province which are Badin,
Tando Mohammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Thatta, Hyderabad (rural), Matiari,
Sanghar and Mirpurkhas. Recently the company also won bids for two new
exploration blocks, Digri and Sanghar South, which lie adjacent to UEPLs
Mirpur Khas Khipro concession areas.

Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL) was established in the


year 2000 as a private limited company, 100% owned by the Government of
Pakistan. GHPL has partnership in 35 exploration licenses among which 19
are onshore with 5% carried interest and 04 onshore with 25% (full sharing)
and 12 are offshore. Currently there are 46 development and production
leases in which GHPL has a share. 30 are producing, 15 fields are under
development , Junathi South has been depleted and 01 field is suspended.

OCEAN PAKISTAN LIMITED (OPL):

OPL is the successor to Orient Petroleum International Inc, (a Company
incorporated in Cayman Islands), by means of amalgamation/merger with its
wholy owned subsidiary namely OPL, which began oil/gas exploration in
Pakistan in 1979. Within 5 years of commencing E&P activities, OPL made
Pakistan's largest oil discovery at the Dhurnal field in the Punjab Province of
Pakistan. OPL, as Operator, has, to its credit eleven (11) exploration
discoveries in the southern region and three (3) discoveries with in the
northern region of Pakistan. OPL continues to explore extensively for oil &
gas and is presently operating three Exploration Licenses namely Sakhi
Sarwar Block located in Punjab, Marwat Block in Khyber Pakhtoonkhawa and
Harnai South Block located in Balochistan Province. OPL is also a Joint
Venture Partner with OGDCL and Petronas Carigali in the non-operated

Saif Energy Limited (SEL) was incorporated in March 2004
as a public limited company. The Companys main focus is on upstream
Petroleum sector. SEL is a subsidiary of Saif Group. SEL holds Working
Interest in 4 exploration blocks. It is operator of two blocks Sari South block
located in prospective Kirthar Range in southern Pakistan and Khetwaro block
located in the Central Indus Basin. In these blocks, its JV partners include
OGDCL and OMV. The company also holds 10% interest each in Kohat and
Bannu West Blocks, operated by OGDCL and Tullow, respectively.

TULLOW PAKISTAN (DEVELOPMENTS) Ltd:

Tullow Oil plc is one of Europes leading independent oil and
gas exploration and production companies with operations in over 20
countries. Tullow has been active in Pakistan since 1991 and currently has

Zaver Petroleum Corporation Limited (ZPCL) is an emerging Pakistani

The downstream oil sector is a term commonly used to refer to the

ATTOCK REFINERY LIMITED (ARL):

Attock Refinery Limited (ARL) was incorporated as a
Private Limited Company in November, 1978 to take over
the business of the Attock Oil Company Limited (AOC) relating to refining of
crude oil and supplying of refined petroleum products. ARLs current capacity
stands at 43,000 bpd and it possesses the capability to process lightest to
heaviest (10-65 API) crudes. ARLs current Expansion / Up-gradation Projects
comprises of Preflash unit, Naphtha Isomerization unit, Diesel Hydro
Desulphurization (DHDS) unit and expansion of existing Captive Power Plant.
This would increase refinery capacity by 10,400 bpd.

PAKISTAN REFINERY LIMITED (PRL):


ADDRESS: Korangi Creek, Korangi Industrial Area,

Pakistan Refinery was incorporated in Pakistan as a public
limited company in May 1960. The Refinery has a capacity of processing
47,000 barrels per day of crude oil into a variety of distilled petroleum
products such as Furnace Oil, High Speed Diesel, Kerosene oil, Jet fuel and
Motor gasoline etc. The Refinery is operating at two locations. Main
processing facility is located at Korangi Creek with supporting crude berthing
and storage facility at Keamari. Initially, the design capacity of the Refinery
was to process 1 million tons of crude oil annually, which was subsequently
expanded to 2.1 million tons per annum.

PAK-ARAB REFINERY Ltd (PARCO):

PAK ARAB REFINERY LTD (PARCO) is a Joint Venture
between Government of Pakistan and the Emirate of Abu
Dhabi, incorporated as a public limited company in 1974. With a refining
capacity of 100,000 BPD, combined storage capacity of over one million
metric tons, a marketing joint venture with TOTAL (France), a technical
support venture with OMV (Austria), PARCO has emerged as the strategic fuel
supplier to the country with a broad portfolio of operational ventures. The
organisation encompasses Pakistans largest refinery and 2000 kms of cross
country pipeline network, including its subsidiary PAPCO.

NATIONAL REFINERY Ltd (NRL):

National Refinery Limited ( NRL ) was incorporated on
August 19, 1963 as a public limited company. NRL is engaged
in the manufacturing, Production and sale of large range of petroleum
products. The refinery complex of the Company comprises of three refineries,
consisting of two lube refineries and one fuel refinery. The companys plants
have a fuel refining capacity of 2,710,500 tons per annum (TPA) of crude oil,
two lube refineries with a combined designed capacity of 191,200 TPA of
lube base oils (LBO) and a BTX unit with a designed capacity of 25,000 TPA.

INDUS REFINERY LIMITED (IRL):

Indus Refinery limited (IRL) is the first deep conversion refinery of
pakistan. IRL was registered in 2004 as a Pakistan Public Limited Liability
Company. The refinery complex of the company has fuel refining capacity of
93,000 BPSD or 4.5 million metric tons per annum.

BYCO OIL PAKISTAN Ltd:

Byco Oil Pakistan Limited (BOPL), is a
company incorporated in Pakistan on 6th April, 2006 having a portfolio of oil
refining and chemical manufacturing businesses. Byco's operational refinery
has a capacity to refine 35,000 barrels a day of crude oil into various
saleable components including Liquefied Petroleum Gas, Light Naphtha,
Heavy Naphtha, High Octane Blending Component, Motor Gasoline,
Kerosene, Jet Fuels, High Speed Diesel and Furnace Oil. The company have
expanded our refining complex by setting up another refinery with the
capacity of 120,000 barrels per day which is completed.
