GeneratorPanels
Therearenormallythreegeneratorsonanaveragesizedshipbutcoursethisnumbercouldvaryeitherside
dependingonthesizeandtypeofship.Therearegeneratorpanelswhichshowtheparameterssuchasvoltage,
loadandsoon,whichhelpsthedutyengineertodecidehowmanygeneratorsshouldberunningattime.
Thenormalpracticeistokeeponegeneratorrunningandothersonstandbyduringsailing.Atport,theremightbe
severaldeckoperationsgoingonsuchascranes,winchesetcsonormallytwogeneratorsarerunningwhilerestare
standby.
Thereisalsoprovisiontosynchronizethegeneratorsfromthecontrolroomandthisarticleexplainstheprocessof
generatorsynchronizationindetail.
AlarmPanel
Usuallythereisapanelwhichmonitorsallkindsofparameterssuchaslevel,temperature,pressureofmachineries
andtanks.Anyabnormalshiftoftheparameterfromthepermittedrangeisimmediatelyloggedandalarmis
sounded.Thedutyengineerthenneedstotakeappropriateactionafterthat.
Forexamplesupposeafueloiltankisbeingfilledbytransferringfromthestoragetanktotheservicetankandthe
engineerforgetstostopthepump.Thehighlevelalarmwillsoundintheengineroom.Incaseofautomated
systems,thepumpmightbeprogrammedtostopimmediatelyorcouldbedonemanuallydependingonthe
situation.

machinerywhichrunstheshipandhencethereare
controlsformainengineaswell.Thisincludescontrols
suchasfuelcontrol,speedsetting,emergencystop,
loadindicator,directionindicatorandsoforth.Normally
thesecontrolsareonlyoperatedbythesenior
engineersorjuniorengineersunderobservationof
theirseniors.

ComputerSystems
Inmodernships,computersareanintegralpartofthesystem.Infactthereisanetworkofcomputerswhichare
locatedatimportantpointssuchasbridge,controlroom,Captainsoffice,ChiefEngineersofficeandsoon.These
systemscanbeconnectedtotheInternetviasatellitelinksandareusedtocommunicatemessageswiththe
companyandpersonalmessagestoo.
Computersincontrolroomalsorecord,monitorandlogallactivitiessuchastripsandalarms.NormallyPMS
softwareisalsoloadedinthesecomputerswhichkeeprecordofengineroommaintenanceactivities,stockofspare
partsetc.
ElectricalSwitchboards
Theswitchboardscontainthevariousswitcheswhichareusedtocontrolpowersupplytothevariousmachineriesin
theengineroom.Theyalsocomeinhandywhensomethinghastobestoppedinemergencyfromthecontrolroom
itself.Ofcoursecareshouldbetakennottodependtoomuchonthem.Normallyengineersprefertoshutdown
machinerylocallywhereverpossibleratherthanremotestopping.
Therealsoavoltmeterandammeterforallmajorequipmentwhichshowsthevoltageandcurrentflowingtothat
equipmentandisusefultodetectanyfault.Forexampleofapumpisdrawingabnormalcurrent,itcanbesensed
fromthepanelandthereasonsforthesameexploredbygoingdownintheengineroom.
PracticalConsiderations
Itisawellknownfactthatthingsdonotgoalwaysasperidealconditionsortheoriesallthetime.Thisisalsotrueof
theshipandwhereasthecontrolroomisconcerned,inmostcasesthejuniorengineersarediscouragedfrombeing

inthecontrolroomexceptwhenrestingordoingsomeworkrelatedtothecontrolroom
itself.Mostofthetimes,thejuniorengineersareexpectedtoremaindownintheengine
roomsothattheylearnfromexperienceratherthanbecominglazybysittinginthe
controlroommostofthetimes.
Theabovedescriptionshouldgiveyouabriefideaaboutthecontrolroomoftheship.
Nowadaysthereisapracticetocombinethecontrolroomandthebridgeroomand
manymodernvesselshavedualpurposecontrolroomsfromwheretheengineand
navigationfunctionscanbecarriedoutmoreconveniently.
